Recommend me a vacuum cleaner

Our ancient dyson which we inherited from my mum seems to have given up the ghost.

Can anyone recommend a decent hoover? We live in a rented flats and the carpets are pretty grim, so suction is important and not too big (or too expensive!).

Thanks!

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. After weeks of trawling the Talk boards, talking to parents and researching bestsellers, here are our trusted reviews to help you find the best cheap vacuum cleaner on the market.

Hope this helps! Flowers

Henry

clayre · 01/04/2007 15:02

vax, hoover and washer couldnt live without it!

JonesTheSteam · 01/04/2007 15:03

Another vote for Henry here. Dyson was too cumbersome.

Read the reviews of Henry on Amazon - some of them are really funny but they're all positive.

bumperlicious · 01/04/2007 15:29

Wow, had a look at all the henry reviews and really impressed, the only thing is that we get a lot of fluff on our carpets from rugs and throws and the henry doesn't have a built in brush. Can you get one's with brushes?

Think you can buy a turbo brush attachment.

themoon66 · 01/04/2007 15:34

Another vote for vax here.... I have an upright one and a shampooing one.

nailpolish · 01/04/2007 15:46

miele all the way

i have the miele cat and dog (i dont have a cat or a dog, lol)

small, so easy to store and sucks like a maniac

great attachments too

nearlythere · 03/04/2007 10:49

vax for me! the orange upright one- bought it off ebay for about 40 quid its fantastic, although a roomba is worth its weight in gold!!

rebelmum1 · 03/04/2007 10:53

not a dyson! bits drop off mine all the time useless for wear and tear and really heavy for carrying up and down stairs. Oh and not very flexible hose. CR~P!! I want my money back.

mielemielemielemielemielemielemielemielemielemielemielemielemiele.....

This month's Which has vac test in, best buys:

They do recommend a couple of Dyson uprights but only because they now come with a 5-year parts and labour guarantee (and they need it!) - they cost c £250 too.

The Miele I have is discontinued now but the S5210 is the equivalent and it's fantastic.

satine · 03/04/2007 11:26

Do Miele do any bagless cleaners? I'malways too idle to change bags, and I kind of like the grim satisfaction of seeing how much dirt I've sucked up !!!

Clary · 03/04/2007 11:27

well I like my dyson

Hate the way my mum's miele (bagful, not bagless) gets all blocked up-feeling.

booge · 03/04/2007 11:31

I love my Miele cat and dog.

JanH · 03/04/2007 11:44

Mine only feels blocked when it's absolutely jampacked and ready to explode - and the bags are made of some soft stuff, not paper, changing is quick and neat and not dusty or dirty (I also have a Dyson and emptying that is a mess)

totaleclipse · 03/04/2007 11:45

Sebo upright

NadineBaggott · 03/04/2007 11:45

Jan - do any scores get into the 80's or above?

rebelmum1 · 03/04/2007 11:46

clouds of dust puff up all around and when you close the lid you get last gasp of dust that scatters everywhere.. (dyson)

rebelmum1 · 03/04/2007 11:48

dyson might be ok in a really clean dust free bungalow

JanH · 03/04/2007 11:49

That 74 is the top score in this test, NB.

Will you wait until something gets 80 before you buy one?

NadineBaggott · 03/04/2007 11:51

top score for miele or all brands?

nah! I've always had uprights but dd has a miele cylinder and it seems pretty good I must say. I have 2 vacuums - one upstairs, one down (save my old bones )

I need a new kettle and toaster too - any recommendations? my kettle takes eons to boil!

JanH · 03/04/2007 11:55

Top score for all brands - it only looks like just Miele (although there is a Nilfisk (WTF?) in there too) - if you like I'll post the bottom half of the best buys in a min.

I think they did kettles recently too...

NadineBaggott · 03/04/2007 12:00

great, thanks!

JanH · 03/04/2007 12:07

Second half of Which vac test:

JanH · 03/04/2007 12:07
