Recommend me a vacuum cleaner

Our ancient dyson which we inherited from my mum seems to have given up the ghost.

Can anyone recommend a decent hoover? We live in a rented flats and the carpets are pretty grim, so suction is important and not too big (or too expensive!).

Thanks!

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. After weeks of trawling the Talk boards, talking to parents and researching bestsellers, here are our trusted reviews to help you find the best cheap vacuum cleaner on the market.

Hope this helps! Flowers

Dysons were the worst hoovers I ever had. Absolute rubbish adn very messy to empty.

Love my Miele - bought on JanH's recommendation! Henry sounds great too - I ummmed and ahhhed over Miele or Henry but am very happy with my decision.

JanH - many thanks for finding the time to give us all the info from Which! SO helpful. I am still using a 23 year old upright Electrolux which used to belong to my parents, but it really is life expired. I didn't know where to start looking for advice on what to buy, but yet again Mumsnet contributors have saved the day!
