I'm thinking of buying a steam cleaner

We are moving to a brand new house which has a large family room. This and the hallway will have a ceramic tiled floor. I've already invested in a hand held Dyson and think I would like to add to my cleaning collection a steam cleaner that is a mop and a hand held cleaner so I can use this in the bathrooms. I've been looking a the Morphy Richards one which was discussed on MN some time ago., everyone loved it but the reviews on Amazon are not consistently good. Are they as good as they say they are? Can you really clean your oven with one? Any tips/advice appreciated.

I'm a professional cleaner and in my opinion nothing beats elbow grease

Oh that's disappointing. I was hoping that there would be many people saying how it changed their life. I'm not afraid of a bit of elbow grease but there will be a large expanse of floor to keep clean and two en suites, a family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom. (This is not a stealth boast). I just want to keep it looking good and smelling fresh. I live in a male dominated house so please have sympathy. There is also football boots to deal with it. Plus I've got housemaid elbow as I used to run an ironing service till RSI put a stop to it.

I've got that Morphy Richards one and its not very handy to use. The cord isn't that long and you need to give it a good push. I'm not tall but I find the handle too short so it's a bit of a strain. I've actually just went back to using a mop. I got a self wringing one from B&Ms yesterday and it's much quicker and less hassle. Agree with pp about using elbow grease!

We clean everything with it... Carpets, floors, rugs, bathrooms, the interior of the cars...

Nothing beats it IMO .

I got a thane one. Now on my second. I love love love it and so does my cleaner. Yes it changed my life.

Love my steam cleaners. I have one just for floors and another which comes apart for worktops, sinks, taps etc. They're brilliant

I loved my X mop that I bought off a shopping channel. Was so excited when it arrived and was great apart from the mop heads falling off when too soggy. I was gutted when DP thought it would be a good idea to use it to strip paint and broke it. Sad

I honestly don't think it cleans my floor as well as a traditional mop.

I have a massive downstairs area - about 55m2 - and I still haven't decided on a steam cleaner yet. Our tiles are huge (90cm x 90cm) so quite easy to mop but the grouting needs treatment with bleach and a toothbrush.

I dream of the day a steam cleaner comes onto the market which gets 100% 5* reviews!

I was coming on here to say I have the vax mentioned above and I hate it! Was hoping it would make everything look and feel super clean (we have wood floors throughout downstairs) but it doesn't seem to make it that clean......

I have the morphs Richards one and its crap for floors only thing it's good for is grout I between tiles!

I have a Karcher. I wanted a steam cleaner for years then saw a really good deal so took the plunge and bought it. I've had it about a year now and used it three times. I am really not impressed with it at all. It's a bit of a ball ache to use and I swear it doesn't really clean as well as i thought it would. As someone above said, you can't beat a bit of old fashioned elbow grease. I have a large kitchen and bathroom downstairs which are all tiled and thought it would be great to use but it's so disappointing Sad

I've got the Vax ten in one steam cleaner & I love it.
Cleans my kitchen & bathroom floors in minutes. Also use it to clean the kitchen tiles above cooler & is a lot better than me cleaning it.
Trying it on the oven this week.

I found my mop wasn't doing the kitchen floor justice & this does so easily.

I had a cheap one from wilkos, it doesn't clean as well as I hoped but it is brilliant for keeping on top of it. It takes no longer to mop the floor than it does to Hoover (I have a handheld dyson too and love it) which means I mop a lot more often, so my floors are more likely to be clean if anyone pops in as I used to put mopping off until it really needed it, now I don't. It also clears up mucky dog footprints in seconds, brilliant in winter!

No drying time either, not that I ever left puddles but I have a husband and a dog that both view just mopped and wet floors as an invitation to meander around and leave footprints!

I now have a dirt/dust devils one as it was the cheapest in argos that did everything that I wanted it to and my cheap wilkos one stopped producing steam the day before my MIL came to stay and just as I was doing a deeper clean. The mop and bucket was sworn at when I had to drag it out of the cupboard again!

I have a vaporetto. This is my 2nd. First one lasted 15 years and was dragged out to every property and was roughly handled and could still take paint off a window, clean the floors and clean the group.
New one is still very good and does exactly the same stuff but feels just that little bit flimsier

I think they're shit and make hard work of things. I've sent two back. I have a theory that the people who like them bang on about how good Henry Hoovers are and one they're shit tooGrin

Nothing beats elbow grease as the pp said.

No idea, but with that many males in the house, I would claim your own bathroom, allocate them one and tell them to clean their own, and lock the doors of the others Grin
