is there a way of getting a nice clean washing smell in your house.. apart from the obvious!

Obviously having washing drying around the place isn't always possible. I'm more of a reed diffuser kind of person than a glade plug in. Is there anything anyone can recommend which sort of emulates a fresh clean smell?? Thanks.

Yankee candle - clean cotton or baby powder. Either candles or reed diffusers. They aren't cheap but I try and get them when they are 2 for £20 and they last ages.

Sorry, the reed diffusers are often 2 for £20. Candles are a bit more.

Put scented tumble drier sheets over warm radiators. They are less than £1 a packet in some shops and smell lovely.

I prefer incense oil in a burner, it gives a better scent than candles

Thanks all. I may start with the tumble drier sheets and work my way up Grin. Chips, I do (generally) have a clean house which imo smells of nothing - it's a clean washing smell I'm after.

Ah, I call it Sunday afternoon smell....it's impossible to recreate I find, as it requires a cold afternoon, tumble dryer, steamy windows and a roast dinner cooking. smells like home as a kid. Possibly with the series of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe (BBC 2, late 80s/early 90s) on in the background which has never been repeated or released as a DVD, why not??
Those Yankee candles are a good second, I buy the little melters that that are only a few pounds and put them in the bottom of each drawer in my chest so my clothes smell fresh. Definitely going to try the tumble dryer sheets on the radiators though....

Ooh or neutradol air fresheners spray, doesn't smell of washing, but does smell very clean and fresh.

Add a drop of fabric softener when you clean your floors, if you have all carpets and no hard floors mix a small bowl up and wipe over your radiators with it.

Top tips everyone thank you! Averagebear you are absolutely right - why has that never been repeated?! The only problem with recreating that Sunday afternoon atmosphere for me is that it would also have to include a soupcon of boredom (antiques roadshow/songs of praise) with the despair of having to go back to school the next morning.

Tumble dryer sheets over the radiator? Sounds like a good idea, except that there's probably chemicals in them (?).....

Like pp I burn oil in an incense burner, the oil I buy in the local new age/health food shop. Pure and natural.

Zorflora have a scent called Clean Linen. I use it diluted in my hallway to clean light switches, radiators, skirtings etc. Scent lasts for ages. I believe some people pop a couple of drops on a cloth and wipe over radiator with it so when radiators are on spreads the smell even more.

I want that Zoflora now! I have tumble dryer sheets (goes off to add one to the futility room radiator). I usually favour Yankee Candles too, I find they smell so strong you don't even need to burn them, just unwrap them or take the top off the jar!

Few drops of essential rubbed over light bulb(when cold), as it heats up when on it releases it's scent.

Zoflora one good idea too. I use a capful in with towel/sports kit washes. I like the Linen, lavender, orchid and the bouquet scented ones. There are some christmas/winter ones I noticed the other day too.

I always wanted a utility room. The one I have is so small it does not match up to the room full of mechanical servants that I had in my mind. It does, however, now have a tumble dryer sheet over the tiny radiator, sharing the space with a hand towel. The tumble dryer itself is in the kitchen because the (f)utility room is too small to cope with more than a sink and a washing machine Angry
