'Fess up - How clean is the inside of your car?

Gameboy · 24/11/2006 09:42

OK, not strictly 'Good Housekeeping' but I guess related.

Reason I ask is because a few of my friends who have fairly clean and tidy houses have completely rank, disgusting cars! You know the sort of thing - apple cores rotting in the armrest hole, mud all over the seats, spilt drinks on upholstry, general junk all over the foors.

i just wonder why, if your car is like this, why it is?

We're not obsessive, but we take rubbish out of the car when we leave. Floors are always clear, and kids take muddy boots etc off.

Is it a difference between people who have driveways (i.e. park near house, soap & water and vacuum) and those that have to park miles away on the street?

Mine's messy, and dusty inside (filthy outside too). I get a lot of gravel in the driver's side footwell, when I wear shoes with a tread, it tends to bring them in, and I did actually get round to sweeping it out a couple of days ago - looks a lot better. Just need to do the rest of it now. It's when you have to move a child's car seat out for some reason and you find all the stuff underneath that it makes me and .

TheHighwayCod · 24/11/2006 09:45

Had to go in he back of a friends car last weekend and seriously thought I was going to vom - such a bad smell too, and she doesn't even have dogs!

BettySpaghetti · 24/11/2006 09:47

It hasn't got rotting food but it does have a lot of toys, books, items of clothing and sand/mud/grass scattered around the back seats. Oh, and the door pockets probably need emptying of car-park tickets, wrappers and general crap.

We do have a driveway and garage but its not next to the house. Garage has electricity so no real excuse about not hoovering the car out other than sheer laziness and it not being top of my priority list!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 24/11/2006 09:47

I cleaned mine out a few weeks ago - including taking the kids seats out and OMG - it was VILE.

I have cleaned it as best I can, but we have resorted to bin bags on the back seats and girls seats on top of them. I have decided since cleaning it out that all rubbish is to be taken out after every trip and I will hoover it out once a month!!!

charliecat · 24/11/2006 09:48

Mine is vile. Mcdonalds chips growing from under the seats and banana skins trod into the carpet.
In fact, dd2, whos 5, had a MASSIVE tantrum last night because I said we are goijng to clean the car out.
She was adamant that it was my car, so I should tidy it myself She was going so beserk, the neighbours put thier wheelie bin out a day early just so they could see what the noise was all about

auntymandy · 24/11/2006 09:49

mine is spotless!!! only because dh did it last week!!!

whoopsfallenoveragain · 24/11/2006 09:50

My friends wonder what is worng when my car is tidy

NomDePlume · 24/11/2006 09:50

Mine is yucky, mainly crisp packets and pine needles etc, nothing sticky though.

The outside is worse though - we park our cars on our drive underneath a HUGE protected pine tree which drops needles constantly. A squirrel lives there and he does spectacular curly poos all over the cars . The tree is dropping catkin-like things and so the cars are covered in greeny yellow dust.

DH's car is similar inside - full of pine needles.

I just have better things to do than be anal about my car, it is a family workhorse.

My house on the other hand......

2quokkasandaparetree · 24/11/2006 09:53

ours is so bad it's making us want to buy another car! Our topbox is still on the car and has been for 5 months, my double buggy is still up there (I can't get it down) so ds2 has been getting wet on the buggy board!

NomDePlume · 24/11/2006 09:57

quokka - what's a pare tree ?

Kelly1978 · 24/11/2006 09:57

disgusting, and I only cleaned it out last week. Mine is full of mud from the pram, I think I'm goign to use lth/s tip and keep a brush in the car. It also has sugar sprinkled in the boot from where a bag split. ANd the endless toys and socks that the dts insist on littering the car with. I pulled out ten odd socks from under the seats last week.

dhw · 24/11/2006 09:58

Wish there was an angelic icon - cos i've just this second cleared mine out. Even dust busted it. It was vile.

ludalightsandlanterns · 24/11/2006 09:59

I don't know the current status of mess in my car...it has been at a garage for repairs...I'm begining to forget what it looks like its been there that long!

NotAnotherOtter · 24/11/2006 10:00

mines clean
dp's ...ill

foxinsocks · 24/11/2006 10:02

ours is dreadful

still has a layer of sand on all the floor bits because of a summer trip to the coast

we use the car as an extra room so it permanently has stuff in the boot that's going to the dump except we never remember to go

NomDePlume · 24/11/2006 10:06

Did you know that carrying around unnecessary junk in the boot of your car has a big effect on your fuel consumption ?

My boot is empty

sunnysideup · 24/11/2006 10:27

oh god, I've just got the house spotless and now THIS.

LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

I'll do it later.

Has someone paid my mum to start this thread??

MamaG · 24/11/2006 10:30

mine is filthy, dog goes in the boot, I can't remember the last time I cleaned it. I have a half-hearted swish around the dash with a tissue occasionally but thats it.

V embarrassing when take child seats out and about a million mouldy raisins fall out and crumbs!

I've got enough to do without pissing about in the car. Would love to have it valeted.

2quokkasandaparetree · 24/11/2006 10:31

NomDePlume I've just noticed that! I blame Uwila she thought of the name and I just just went copied and paste - will change now [blush}

2quokkasandapeartree · 24/11/2006 10:35
