'Fess up - How clean is the inside of your car?

Gameboy · 24/11/2006 09:42

OK, not strictly 'Good Housekeeping' but I guess related.

Reason I ask is because a few of my friends who have fairly clean and tidy houses have completely rank, disgusting cars! You know the sort of thing - apple cores rotting in the armrest hole, mud all over the seats, spilt drinks on upholstry, general junk all over the foors.

i just wonder why, if your car is like this, why it is?

We're not obsessive, but we take rubbish out of the car when we leave. Floors are always clear, and kids take muddy boots etc off.

Is it a difference between people who have driveways (i.e. park near house, soap & water and vacuum) and those that have to park miles away on the street?

Frankly it's like mucking out the horses, I could use a fork and a wheelbarrow - soggy biscuits, various sweet wrappers, half empty water bottles, odd socks, comics, map books for when we went to Cornwall (at Easter!), various bits of baling twine, dog blanket, dog towels, bag of horse food, bits of hay everywhere, my riding gear, my daughter's riding gear, one headcollar, some over-reach boots, a thermos (with some v. old coffee in - yuk) and the list goes on....

In my defence, it is an old Landrover and so it shouldn't be tidy and clean. It's a working vehicle and to be honest, I struggle to keep on top of the housework let alone the car!

On the other hand, my DH's car is spotless and funnily enough he's not too keen on me using it....

aDadOnMumsnet · 24/11/2006 12:52

Usually it is filthy, but I cleaned it the other day. Happens about once a year.

ComeOVeneer · 24/11/2006 12:54

I am extremely tidy in the house, but am ashamed to sy the car is a tip. Ds is terrified of the carwash and we still have a hosepipe ban. Plus no off street parking so ofen park a wayaway from house. Mine is hygeinic (is no mouldy fruit etc) but full of wellies, coats, pushchair, travel highchair and a tonne of dd's reception class "art" that never quite makes it into the house.

foxtrot · 24/11/2006 12:55

mine stinks (according to DH - but then he never has messy children in his)

McDreamy · 24/11/2006 12:56

sparkling but it is brand new - bet it won't stay that way for long

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 24/11/2006 12:59

It mings. The house is my priority. The house is scruffy and mostly untidy.. but clean underneath. The car is not worthy of my cleaning efforts. As long as it doesn't stink too badly inside, and it gets us from A - B...

julezboo · 24/11/2006 13:03

I spent hours doing mine the other week, but only so i didnt feel when I went to halfords to buy a carseat for the new baby that is coming, still havnt been so Im determined to keepit clean till we go!

TinselgalacticWalrus · 24/11/2006 13:05

mine's not too bad. There's just an extraordinary amount of grit in the footwells.

My old car, howvever was a skip on wheels

shouldbedoinghousework · 24/11/2006 14:43

Ours is pretty awful most of the time what with kids snacks, drink cartons, toys, wellies, rain coats and so on... am often ashamed by it and have quick clear out but it never seems to be long before it's a disgrace again!

runkid · 24/11/2006 14:49

mine is a little like a skip its just one of those jobs i hate and with the kids muddy feet and so on i just cant muster the energy,it is to cold

iota · 24/11/2006 14:50

fortunately for me, my car was serviced last week and it was cleaned and vacuumed FOC by the garage

wasn't smiling when I got the bill for the service/repairs though

twelvedaysofchristmas · 24/11/2006 14:52

I shout at DH and DD if they try to leave rubbish in it, but it IS full of bits of leaves and dirt off shoes etc. I am too lazy to vac it myself so occasionally bring it to one of those handwash places who do a quick inside and out for a tenner.

paulaplumpbottom · 24/11/2006 17:34

I used to always have a spotless car. Then my daughter came along and it constantly looks like a bomb has gone off. I don't usually leave food in it though. It does smell slightly of beer after I broke a bottle coming back from the grocers one day. I just keep waiting to get pulled over. I bet they test me for drink.

LadyTophamHatt · 24/11/2006 17:37

the words "Clean" and "inside my car" are not words I would EVER see together!!

Blu · 24/11/2006 17:45

My car is filthy. Inside and out.

It caused a minor high street commotion in the summer. I had the windows open, and there was a loud bang and something hit me on the leg. Me, and a traffic warden, thought that something had been fired into the car. The traffic warden was shouting 'stand back, stand back' etc. It turned out to be an ancient half-drunk bottle of apple juice in the foot well that had fermented and exploded.

LadyTophamHatt · 24/11/2006 17:46

OMG blu....LOLOLOLOLOL

sunnysideup · 24/11/2006 17:51

oh, hurrah and huzzah! Someone phone my mum! I am not the worst slob - Blu you take the crown

jalopy · 24/11/2006 17:55

I would describe ours as a 'motorised wheelie bin'.

BudaBeast · 24/11/2006 17:56

Spotless.

(Only because I had it washed and valeted yesterday!)

It will be filthy again by Monday!

tortoiseshell · 24/11/2006 17:56

Ours is disgusting. Stuff everywhere, apple cores - from dd who takes an apple, and then abandons the core.

LOOBYLOU2 · 24/11/2006 18:07

Pretty disgusting.
dried mud from (not!)recent country walks, receipts, toys, pile of magazines waiting to be passed on, juice cartons, raisin boxes - not all empty, CD's (all in wrong cases which infuriates DH on Short Fuse.
To make matters worse I share the nursery run with Alpha Mummy and her immaculate B Class
But hey

  • lifes too short
nikkie · 24/11/2006 22:18

Fairly clean-only had it a month and have banned food so far!

EmmyLou · 24/11/2006 23:11

Filthy inside and out. I do clear out litter regularly but its the mud and dog hairs and dd3's sticks and bits of gravel that she picks up all over the place.

Only have on street parking on main street in village so washing opportunities are minimal and I don't fancy standing outside with a hoover nozzle at this time of year. Not that I do anyway - cursury going over with dustpan and brush is as good as it gets.

I do love other people's clean cars though.

Greengirlforever · 24/11/2006 23:14

A toilet. Every now and then I have to empty out all the diet coke cans which roll under the pedals and stop the brakes working....

cowmad · 24/11/2006 23:29

minging in and out!!
