The Hoarders Anonymous Thread Part Two...Still Sorting It Out ~ Together!

Sorting out the home when you're a hoarder (big or small) is never going to be easy and we should know! but having someone else to support you, talk about it with you and make you feel much less of a freak of mother nature makes a huge difference!

If you are any of the following:
A hoarder. In a mess. Untidy. Disorganised. Lazy with housework that has lead to something that you now feel unable to deal with. If you are ill and not coping with the housework. If you are emotionally attached to items for whatever reason. If you have a combination of any or all of these things or something completely different, please join us. No one here will judge you. We have something in common and we have a common goal. We share our ideas and we share our disappointments no matter how big and our celebrations no matter how small.

Welcome to thread number 2! :)

Thank you :) Didn't do anything but cook dinner today (Sunday). Should have. Didn't.

As far as using up stuff goes knitting well I did that before for a long while until I forgot to keep doing it (I think I saw new scents of the Natural Source shower gels and just had to try them). But I was given a set of 4 Body Shop shower gels for Christmas in about 2012 and haven't used them, so I have two Natural Source and 4 Body Shop and the one I'm currently using ~ a Dove one that I don't like and they should easily last all year or longer! Think of the money I don't need to spend! I don't use much tablet soap, but I do like to have it available to use in case I want to Hmm. I have gift sets that I bought in the Boots sale 3 years ago. Some I've gifted and others I kept for myself, but I should use the blinking things! Which would probably mean I don't need to buy any shower stuff for 3 years!
Anyway, now I'm feeling a lot better, I hope to spend a couple of hours each morning 'doing' before going to work. That's the plan!

Lots to do.

Welcome LastnightsDJ :) Yes of course! Do join in :)

Does anyone use Gumtree to get rid of things? Ive sold a bed on there, with no fees its quite good.

MadamMooMoo · 06/02/2017 07:08

Started on the attic, so much crap in there. Must have thrown out/ donated recycled 80% of what I've seen so far, so much crap.

DH is worse than me, wanting to hang on to broken lamps and old candle holders "just in case" Angry

Both going to work through the attic. Currently converting it to another room so all the rubbish is everywhere, feels so claustrophobic :(

LastnightaDJ · 06/02/2017 09:52

Suncream loses about 50% of its "power" after about 6 months, so be aware of that. We are very fair so I now tend to buy smaller bottles as I need to throw out leftovers anyway, can't take chances of being burnt.
I threw away some shower gels /creams etc that I knew I'd never use, as I really don't like strong perfumes. I now use only Aveeno hand cream and it actually works so it gets used rather than it hanging around and never being used. I find also, bizarrely, that just having one good tube is much easier - I never lose it now as I can keep track of it, always store it in one place.

Solo · 06/02/2017 10:19

BNVR I have only ever sold my Dd's Maclaren stroller on Gumtree, but it took ages and loads of stupid offers when I was only asking £100 for an all but perfect stroller with muff, net basket, liner and rain cover! I got my £100 eventually and the buyer got a bargain as all that was wrong with it was a small dark mark on the muff where the wheels caught it when folded down. Sorry, that was a bit of a rant wasn't it!
One of my friends sells on Gumtree, she always goes back to it, so I guess it can work out.

I have loads of Dd's Birkenstocks and Pepillio sandals to sell this year so I think I will try Gumtree rather than Ebay to avoid the charges.

had another clutter aargh moment today. Was looking for black thread (the simplest thing isn't it that is never available) to darn ds1's school jumper. Could not find it anywhere despite my ginormous box of sewing kit. Sorted out sewing box, and threw away some more things. Still couldn't find it.

Finally found it next to the telly when I was about to turn the telly on about three hours later, having stopped being interested in the darning project. Such a waste of time to have things all over the place!!!! Still haven't darned the jumper needless to say.

Did throw away various newspapers from weekend, file various bits of paper and find three important envelopes. that is something. and do lots of laundry. Still living in a messy house though Sad Ds1's room is terrible, my room is terrible, the playroom is terrible. I've been for a run though Smile

CheshireChat · 07/02/2017 18:31

We're moving on Monday- Tuesday so tried packing most of my makeup and took the plunge to bin things that were either very old/ crap/ not suitable or various combinations of the three. I should probably bin/ give away more stuff, but I can't bear part with it yet! Not even the bronze toned Nyx lipstick that clashes formidably with my cool toned pale skin...

I now make a good scary clown impression as I dicked about trying various things, but I've got enough makeup remover for the next year so no worries there!

MadamMooMoo · 07/02/2017 21:32

Had day off today. Took DD to park then swimming. Bathroom decluttered ready for clean, clothes to charity and children's room tidied and toys organised into boxes based on catagories. I am shattered.

Tomorrow tidy main bedroom and clean bathroom.

HalfPintPixie · 07/02/2017 21:39

I didn't know I needed this thread until I found it! Grin

I just moved house a few weeks ago. Most of the new house is tidyish (still more stuff than I need, but not too bad) but the boxroom is totally chock a block with black bags and boxes full of clothes and stuff to sort and get rid of.
I plan to do it soon, but sometimes just looking at how much to do makes me need to take a break lol

knittingwithnettles · 07/02/2017 22:14

cleared hall and front room and kitchen so as to make it presentable because we are getting new blinds and I wanted the lady who was helping me make a decision re colours see an uncluttered "background".

Now feel like crying because there is so much crap in the tv room, and I am going to have to put it all back where it was...or risk tripping over it for next few days. THERE IS TOO MANY THINGS IN THIS HOUSE!!! I do not know why I pretend they fit in here...beware of putting things on surfaces, they will never leave...especially those little boxes where one stores odds and sods...

knittingwithnettles · 07/02/2017 22:16

good luck with your house move cheshire
madam moo your house sounds lovely and organised already
pixie that is how I feel, only it is not even in boxes, it is somehow taken on a life of its own and part of the existing rooms, but spoiling them ifysim...

Can I join- been lurking for a while but feeling completely overwhelmed by my house. We have far too much stuff but I find it so difficult to throw anything away in case I need it but if I go need it there is no chance I could find it. I could really do with some tips on how to start please.

MadamMooMoo · 08/02/2017 08:05

Thanks knitting :). It's this bloody attic conversion, all the attic clutter is everywhere.

NotCitrus · 08/02/2017 10:20

We've made the decision to re-do the living room, which means I have 5 weeks to get it empty. Currently way too much stuff from elsewhere is in my room...

First step - upgrade Dropbox so I can easily get photos from phone to computer so I can sell or give away items.

I have managed 3 shopping trolley loads of stuff to the charity shop this year. Just need to stop too much coming in. Kids don't get that traumatised by their endless art getting recycled, I hope.

Solo · 08/02/2017 22:55

Welcome in Grey Thanks. Some of our previous posts may help, but it might take a while to go through.

I'm off to sleep as exhausted! Hope to be back tomorrow.

determined to tackle the playroom this morning. It is evidently upsetting the cats too, as one sprayed the corner, my cats don't like muddle and confusion.

aims:
various fleecy blankets folded up and away
darn jumper with black thread Angry
put jumper back in ds room
hoover ds room
saucepans in dw
THROW AWAY the extra curtain material and rufflette tape now that curtains finished
THROW AWAY THE WOOL that I have hoarded for three years or put in dd's room (she is doing Textiles GSCE so that might be a solution - pass clutter on to her Shock)
throw away hoarded sour milk or make scones NOW

MadamMooMoo · 09/02/2017 13:12

Tonight plan is:

Finish hige pile of laundry and put clothes away.
Clean bathroom.
Sort through huge chunk of attic clutter for bin/ charity.

Babieseverywhere · 13/02/2017 04:33

I am loving my laundry space upstairs. Easier to dry with the dehumidifier up there. I have not used my drier all week. Even got half the houses bedding up there at the moment.

I do think I need to throw some of the hangers I have up there on my ceiling rack, I have far too many !

Still not eBayed anything, got a bit of a mental block. So that being my priority, explains why I am sorting through paperwork, kitchen cupboards and generally everything I can think of to avoid found the eBay thing, lol. But as long as I an sorting out something, I don't mind.

Plus I need to find time to finish my tatting. I have been tatting a large heart which I wanted to starch and frame for my DH for valentines day. But I don't have time to finish it, despite starting two weeks ago. So it will probably be a post valentines gift at this rate. I have to do it at my own pace in order to be accurate..else it won't end up a heart shape :)

Welcome to the new posters. :)

MadamMooMoo · 13/02/2017 15:39

All bathroom things organised and put away.

Spent entire weekend doing 8 loads of washes! Was 6ish when I started but after changing bedding and things used over the weekend created another two!

Attic is so slow. Have most things in storage to bring back but with DD starting nursery next month and DH not back in work for another 2 plan is him to blitz through attic whilst she is in nursery so now extending storage for another month longer than planned Sad.

Will be worth it for lovely organised house though :)

Solo · 19/02/2017 11:38

I've been very lazy for days...

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 19/02/2017 20:46

Solo We all have lazy days. Enjoy them and move when you are ready too.

I have got three loads of laundry upstairs drying. One load to hang up, one on the washing machine and one more to go !

As a family of six, I have to do a minimum of two loads a day just to stay afloat ! I swear my 10yo tries on clothes and then shoves them back into the wash !

Solo · 20/02/2017 00:33

I think it's my middle name these days though :( Babies I think I just don't know where to start!
I did do 3 wash loads and a dishwasher load. And had a look at my awful house.

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 20/02/2017 07:22

Doing three loads of laundry and the dishwasher is not being lazy !

Ditto, I often stared at my pile and can't find a start point. Would it help to make a priority to do list? Or will you feel less frozen, when you are ready to tackle the house ?

Babieseverywhere · 20/02/2017 07:40

@GreyandGrumpy48

I found following the konmari method of gathering same stuff together and then sorting out...to be helpful.

Alongside the only keep the very useful and the very loved items, anything meh can go !

Plus give everything a home and return it there after use.

I regularly battle the kids rooms. Our room is the dumping room, there is a clean pile here, I can't seem to shift :(

I also have a big pile of eBay items in the dining room, so of course, I am concentrating on clearing kitchen cupboards at the moment.

TBH just doing the basics in a smallish house with four kids in it at half term is tricky. The kids just want to play all the time and make more and more mess ! But it is fun :)

So my aim for half term is too stay afloat :)
