The Hoarders Anonymous Thread Part Two...Still Sorting It Out ~ Together!

Solo · 04/08/2015 01:01

Sorting out the home when you're a hoarder (big or small) is never going to be easy and we should know! but having someone else to support you, talk about it with you and make you feel much less of a freak of mother nature makes a huge difference!

If you are any of the following:
A hoarder. In a mess. Untidy. Disorganised. Lazy with housework that has lead to something that you now feel unable to deal with. If you are ill and not coping with the housework. If you are emotionally attached to items for whatever reason. If you have a combination of any or all of these things or something completely different, please join us. No one here will judge you. We have something in common and we have a common goal. We share our ideas and we share our disappointments no matter how big and our celebrations no matter how small.

Welcome to thread number 2! :)

Miss how lovely to have another bedroom! Envy

Cag I'm sorry, I didn't realise.

I didn't do anything today except colour my hair which I've put off for weeks! Or maybe months Blush.
Washing machine coming on Thursday and I'm not ready...argh!

Solo I know will make life so much easier. The house is only a two bed at the moment so even thoguh things will be easier still think we will outgrow :(.

DH took all the charity shop things over and I've organised clothes that were dry.

I've removed old spare kitchen surface (a £40 on wheels one) and it is now being used to store home office things. Kitchen feels bigger and unit was dumping ground in there.

Jobs I diud last week need doing again as haven't been able to keep on top (organising desk and DD toys).

Need to strip and wash all bedding tonight/ tomorrow.

Solo · 19/03/2017 02:40

Miss I only have 2 bedrooms too and have Dd in with me; I don't mind mostly, but I know we could both do with our own space. I had been going to split the main bedroom in two for both Dc's and I spent a lot on buying what each room would need, but never got around to actually doing it and now Ds has moved out we (Dd and I) could each have our own fairly large space, but I'm overwhelmed and don't seem able to get it done. It's literally been years in the making and I've got all these things for a young man's bedroom that isn't needed now :(

Today after dance, I did 2 wash loads and a dishwasher load and have done a bit in the kitchen. Not great, but better than nothing. Dd has been sorting out toys wanted/not wanted and I need to get all the Playmobile out of the not wanted and try to sell it.

Ah solo I know what you mean with the having things that never get used and then you're past needing them. It's really disheartening isn't it. Can DS not use any of the things though and take them to where he's living?

Friends are coming to play board games this afternoon and I want to keep the table clear so we can all sit round it. Normally the table is full of crap so we have to play on the floor 😳😳😳

We did a freezer and food cupboard inventory yesterday as I want to have a cheap week using it all up. We aren't food hoarders but we do buy too much sometimes and I'm terrified of ending up like my parents in that regard (they yelled at me once for getting rid of some bizarre Italian food product that had a use by date from before I was born - always found mouldy food in the kitchen too and it's left me with massive food issues)

Other than that I can't see me doing any major sorting in the next few days. Pain is pretty bad ATM and TBH so is my mood, I just feel like crying or shouting. But I'm trying to keep going by doing tiny things, rather than beating myself up about not doing more IYSWIM. Yesterday I got rid of a few bits and tidied away a few others, and told myself it was far far better than doing nothing.

MissPoogy · 19/03/2017 16:45

Solo that's rubish you never got to use it. Would your DS still be interested in having it?

Stored some lovely clothes for DD which by the time we found again amoungst the clutter she has now outgrown.

Today took DSS and DD swimming with DH then for food but DD asleep, DSS playing so DH gone to get first load of stuff from storage ready to declutter/ rehome in house.

Plan is end of week to have gotton rid of most of it.

Solo · 19/03/2017 23:01

Ds is at my mum's now and shares a double room with his friend; there isn't any room in there tbh and I don't think I'm inclined to give any of the things I bought to them (triple ceiling light fitting and matching wall light, basket ball type washing bag for eg, but much more), mum wouldn't want them drilling holes in walls and messing with electrics. I guess I'll try to sell them. I did give a load of single bed linen to them today and double/king duvet sets which are quite masceline so I don't particularly want them. I also took a huge amount of Ds's clothing over, so there's a slight improvement there! I'm going to postpone the washing machine delivery I think as I'm nowhere near ready for it yet.

Cag my dining table is covered too and I'd love to be able to eat at it and play board games! Well done for the determination :). It's good to use up what you have in already isn't it? I must continue to do that with my freezer and do some wasteful throwing away and have already started with my canned foods. I gave away loads of tinned tuna as I had too much of it and it needed using up.

Miss I'm terrible for saving Dd too big for her clothes and then getting them out to find they are too small :( Such a shame. I can't wait to be in a position to get everything out of storage!

Cagliostro · 20/03/2017 09:09

Oh I'm not too proud TBH solo the table may be clear but it never lasts more than a day!

Babieseverywhere · 20/03/2017 12:16

I battle my dining table too...but today it is clear and I have cleaned grout in the bathroom....yeah me.

I should have another go at the kids rooms but DH wants me to clear our room, so the running machine currently downstairs can come upstairs.

Whilst it would be brilliant to get the running machine upstairs, our room has 'the pile' and whilst it is piled in quite an organised way at the moment....it will be very hard and take days/weeks to clear !

That said the kids rooms would be so easy after our room...so maybe I should just grit my teeth and get on with it ?

But if it was that easy, then there would not be a pile to start with, would there ?

Hope everyone is doing ok and has better weather than we have at the moment !

MissPoogy · 20/03/2017 14:48

DH is starting to empty storage bay so living room looks messy :(. Plan is three trips a day and declutter it in evening.

He is going to do a skip trip of old attic clutter in a bit so at least the stuff from storage we do keep (after ruthless declutter) can be organised in the attic ready for new homes in house.

Stripped all the beds and am washing the bedding. First time up to date with clothes washing and because of rain can't dry bedding outside.

Hope you are all having a good day :)

GreyandGrumpy48 · 20/03/2017 16:09

Not much progress here- dining table is always the favourite place for everyone to empty their pockets, bags etc so collects clutter however many times I clear it. However washing is nearly up to date if not the ironing- I just need to find a way to keep the areas I've gone from falling back into chaos

CheshireChat · 20/03/2017 21:59

Hello, Cag, hope your Jp Day went well, are you following any shows right now?

I've been sick again which is massively frustrating as I always fall behind with stuff and I seem to have the immunity system of a newborn baby Angry.

The good bit is I've cleared quite a lot of rubbish from the kitchen and broke up a load of boxes and chucked them in the recycle bin. Which is down a flight of stairs and it was dark and raining, called it quits when I saw a monster spider.

I'm finally back on track with laundry and I even folded and put away a couple of loads which I absolutely hate doing so there!

Haven't plumbed in the dishwasher yet so washed all the pots and found a place for them and scrubbed the cooker as well.

Cleared some stuff from the hallway and either binned or found a place for it.

Current pet peeves are the fact I have no storage in the bathroom so obviously looks a mess and the fact my vac is playing up and DP hasn't fixed it yet- I tend to break out in a rash if I do it. We sooo need a new vac but don't want to spend a fortune.

Also, does anyone know any decent carpet cleaner- that's my target for spring cleaning.

Solo · 20/03/2017 23:01

Everyone sounds so good! I've done nothing today as I feel very close to a relapse although I think I might have a kidney infection as I have pain in my sides (kidney areas) and have been this way for several weeks. I should go to the GP but I hate going! I'm just trying to drink more and flush everything out.

Yesterday I changed and washed the bedding and I was on top of the laundy until today of course! . This evening I took Dd to Morrison's for tea. We had a great meal each with pudding and drinks for only £6.05; :) it's my birthday tomorrow and Dd has swimming so we can't do it then so I had an early one :) plus Dd wanted to buy me a birthday present and something for Mother's Day...

Washing machine delivery is postponed until 31st. Must get sorted!

We've been married for 40 years, and in this house for 22 years. We don't have that much stuff, but I'm terrible at keeping old hinges, bent nails, scraps of wood, in case they'll come in handy. I'm gradually getting rid of "stuff", either to charity shops or the dump.

Clearing out and discarding, I was surprised to discover that it's not the well-used items that are hard to let go, but the unused items. I feel like I am letting go of the hobby, the activity, the plans and dreams. Really, I suppose, I am recognising that I'll never run again, never dance again, never play tennis again. Dance? I can barely walk, somedays.

So, it's a sad business. My wife is having a harder time with discarding photographs and momentos. At least half the pix are of her relatives who have died. She doesn't want to digitalise everything, and just looking thru the photographs brings up memories.

Cagliostro · 21/03/2017 09:29

Please go to the doctor solo

John totally get you with the getting rid of stuff you haven't used. It's like admitting defeat :( I find that so hard.

Cheshire no I'm not managing to keep up with any series at the moment. We were watching attack on titan online but our internet is dodgy, I also have moribito on DVD to watch but never find the time. Or energy TBH as I do find it mentally tiring watching new stuff. Oh also one called your lie in April, DSD is bringing that back from uni next month so we can watch together.

No progress here other than a couple of things out of the house, relapsing and in pain

CheshireChat · 21/03/2017 17:41

DP cleared the hallway of all stuff so that makes it easier to clean, just need to give the whole dow downstairs a vac now.

Cag Attack on Titan is finally getting a new season later this year so I'd just wait and watch the whole thing. It's horrible when you feel drained especially if it's due to pain.

MissPoogy · 21/03/2017 22:23

DH has bagged up loads of old paper for recycling (7+ bags). He's also finished the flooring in attic so will be doing plaster and insulation over the next week.

He bought 3 loads form storage which we have gone through and decluttered. Just need boxing up now.

Organised DD toys and boxed up.

Washed some more bedding today.

Solo · 21/03/2017 23:32

Busy lot! Hi John :)

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 22/03/2017 22:25

Welcome John

Hope you feel better Solo

I had a good go at my oldest kids room. Ended up bagging some stuff for them to sort through but at least cleared enough space, so I could clean their window and change their bedding.

I then started the little girls room ! What a nightmare. I bagged loads for sorting at the weekend. Again cleared enough floor for me to clean windows and change bedding. But it is no where near done...young children play with so much stuff and a lot of it is big toys. But even worse a lot of it is teeny tiny and that is even harder to keep track of.

I do like it when they mix and match toys, it shows imagination. I laughed when I found tiny itty bitty furniture in the massive doll house. Each tiny item in the correct room. ..bless them.

CheshireChat · 23/03/2017 16:32

Had a good day today- well, cleaning all day isn't my ideal, but at least the house looks better.

Tidied up the too small clothes that ended up on DS' bedroom floor (what was DP thinking?!) , vacced the living room, hallway and kitchen and did 2 loads of laundry and washed and put away all the dirty pots.

Best thing is I've cleared the table in the kitchen so we can now start using it which will keep the living room crumb free! Also I can let DS do various crafty activities while I cook/ clean as he isn't the sort of kid that you can leave unsupervised.

I want a nap now... [Sleepy]

CheshireChat · 23/03/2017 16:34

Babieseverywhere Yes to small children and big toys! DS absolutely loves Toot Toot, but the Sheer amount of space it takes...

MissPoogy · 25/03/2017 08:03

Half of storage empty.

Stuff we keeping boxed up in attic ready for finding homes in house (want to empty storage first).

Taken tons to charity shop. Recycled so much too.

Still a long way to go.

Babieseverywhere · 25/03/2017 09:13

Sounds like things are moving forward
. Well done guys :)

On the bright side I have saved up enough for the new storage for the big kids room went to Ikea yesterday and brought it.

On the less bright news I have a chest infection and struggling to breath properly and trying to summon energy to build and fill it ! Waiting for antiboitics to kick in first.

Lovely day isn't it.. so sunny :)

Cagliostro · 25/03/2017 16:45

I've not done anything for a while, I've been feeling sick and even more tired than usual. Today I found out why. We now need to somehow declutter enough to fit in...

CheshireChat · 25/03/2017 17:28

Cag are you hinting you're pregnant? If yes, congratulations Flowers! Now that's what I call motivation Wink.

I haven't done anything either yesterday as DS was a nightmare or today as I thought fuck it and went to park and will have to go to shop as I'm not stepping out of the house tomorrow.

I tell a lie- I've washed the plates as we were running out!

Cagliostro · 25/03/2017 19:28

Yup. Took a test earlier and I am indeed pregnant. Not ideal situation TBH so am really conflicted, but I am happy as is DH!

Is it wrong that I'm dreaming up anime-related baby names 😜
