Leaving washing out over night

I didn't get the memo so put the washing in the drier, went out and it was blazing sunshine all afternoon. Grr. Just put a wash on and realised I have to dry it. Not sure pegging out at five will dry it in the hour or two but as I think we're forecasted lovely hot weather this weekend I thought I'd just leave it overnight. Any reason this is not a good idea?

Apparently the world will end according to some but I left mine out last night and Armageddon hasn't hit Cornwall yet

No reason at all, I do it all the time, makes the most of the early morning good weather. I often find it's dry by about 8am. In fact I'm going to stick another load in the WM now.

I woke up to very heavy rain and then hail stones but I was more worried about insects all over the clothes .

I routinely peg washing out at night. It'll still dry.

M neighbour does it now too.

Well, since I posted I have indeed washed and hung out another load. I think it's more efficient use of time and good weather, not laziness. Never had an insect problem either.

I have accidentally left out washing before and the spiders were delighted, they loved it. Webs all over it.

I have left washing out overnight before. However, round here the sky has gone really dark so I have brought my washing in.

I do it to avoid my neighbours lunchtime barby q, the grill stinks of rancid fat burning.

Someone I worked with was describing the horrific housekeeping habits of her neighbour, including "she leaves her washing out all night" I didn't know what to say. I often leave mine out. I didn't admit to it though for fear of being branded a slattern.

I think it goes back to the olden days when no respectable woman worked after marriage and kids and were expected to spend all day buffing and polishing the house and cooking their man a tasty meal for when he got home from work. Leaving your washing hanging out overnight indicated you were a lazy slattern and you were judged accordingly. Not so relevant in these days of womens emancipation when we are free to go out to work as well as do the housework, cooking and washing....

Nooo. It always smells funny if you leave it out at night.

Blinking heck. It's dry already!!

I often do it as not home until late afternoon and as in Scotland it takes a wee while to dry.

Mind you I seem to spend most of my time dashing out to rescue it when it starts raining unexpectedly, as not predicted in BBC weather forecast at all. Did I mention I lived in Scotland?

I put rowels out at 7pm last night as I went out yesterday before the cycle was finished. Brilliant dry washing when I brought it in at 8.30 this morning. I have recently become a convert to overnight on the line it takes days to dry in the house when the heating isn't on.

It's amazing when that happens, isn't it. I pegged out a load of school polo shirts at gone 5 yesterday, and they all dried!

Good god, I can't believe I just posted that. I am turning into my mother. I'm meant to be working.

I was only saying to my husband today how our shopping is different now we have kids. Today was food, bath towels, kitchen knives. Used to be yummy treats, fancy pants, odd diamond....I'm officially old.

Just about to put mine out

I am about to get mine in. Don't want any insects/cobwebs and it smelling funny.

Our washing machine is faulty and a cycle takes 5.5 hrs at the moment. If I'm not going to have time in the morning to peg it out before work I will put it out over night. Sometimes if I can't be bothered to get it in I leave it out and it's usually dry by the morning.

Daffodil, if it's faulty don't use it. Mine went badly wrong earlier in the week, cut out, cut off the power and when the power went back on it was burning and smelling. Could have burnt the house down. Five hours is ridiculous.

But what about dew? I live in a horribly damp very green place and the grass stays wet till about 9. Washing left on the line overnight would come back in wetter than it went out!
