American Fridge Freezers

The Samsung we inherited with our house has finally given up the ghost. It was a 2007/8 model with all the much publicised issues with ice building up around the back of the fridge, the water tank freezing up then splitting and leaking, and so on.

The kitchen is built around the bugger so I'm going to need to get another similar sized one, I really don't want to spend more than £1k on it (am having to use money I've been saving up to do the bathroom, sob) - can anyone recommend one? Have the issues with the old Samsungs been resolved with newer models? LG any good? Can't stretch to Neff etc I don't think.

We have a Samsung from 2011 and haven't had any problems since we got it. It's a 3 door model similar to this one www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/home-appliances/refrigeration/multi-door/RFG23UERS1/XEU

No icing up at all, the pull out drawer is brilliant compared to the side by side model.

I'd recommend mine as its spacious and reliable.

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 09:38

Thanks, I do like the idea of pull out drawers. It's over budget though (not that I even have a budget for this..).
Suppose it's an investment?!

Omg the pull out CHEESE DRAWER! Grin

OP posts:
mortil2 · 16/03/2015 09:43

I want the cheese drawer too Shock

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 09:44

We all need it.

HollyJollyDillydolly · 16/03/2015 09:45

I don't need a new fridge but that one looks pretty amazing!

hellsbells99 · 16/03/2015 09:58

We bought a Samsung one from John Lewis less than a year ago with warranty etc. I was very pleased with it BUT one of the drawer runners has broken through normal use. We have been told this isn't covered as it is a 'consumable'! Err no it is not! I would not recommend buying a Samsung one or John Lewis because of this. Over £1000 worth and it broke through normal use....and they won't send us a new runner. Poor quality and very poor customer service.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/03/2015 10:02

I think this is the one we have. The landlady brought it to replace one that had broken. She asked me what I wanted and I just said no ice/water dispenser as that was what was causing the problem on the old one and also it took up a lot of room from the inside.

Its fine, does the job, and everything fits in.

In a previous house we had a john lewis own brand one and it was good as well, except the freezer section as narrower than the fridge section o some things didn't fit in it easily.

I would much rather have a separate fridge and freezer though, I'm not keen on these huge things.

abyssiniam8 · 16/03/2015 10:05

Someone who works with appliances has told me that LG are very good fridge/freezers BUT you must get the frost free version. He doesn't even work for LG, he repairs Miele Wink

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/03/2015 10:08

would something like this be too small? we have one of these in the in the garage as its our own but the American style was already in this house.

its really good, I love the drawers for the freezer much easier than doors and flimsy plastic drawers.

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 10:08

Hmm. Does anyone have one with ice dispenser/water but NOT plumbed in, I wonder?
I like having it but have developed a phobia of the plumbing due to 18 months of grief with the old Samsung.

OP posts:
tartiflette · 16/03/2015 10:09

Ooh hang on, that hotpoint looks good!

OP posts:
tartiflette · 16/03/2015 10:11

Bollocks it's too tall. My gap is only 181cm high. Hmm
Thank you though HelpMe.

oops forgot the link in my first post

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/03/2015 10:16

could you trim back any plinths/fascias?

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 10:21

Thanks for the link. Not looked at Beko, that one is also fractionally too tall I think but will have a look at other models.
The space has fitted units and a larder around it so we are stuck with the dimensions unless we start dismantling the bloody kitchen which is way down my very long and expensive list of urgent house jobs!

I have a 6-year-old version of this LG one:

www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/refrigeration/american-style-fridge-freezers/lg-gsb325pvqv-american-style-fridge-freezer-silver-10005396-pdt.html#longDesc

Like a PP I chose not to have the ice thing because it takes up so much space.

A few interior bits have broken in that time but only due to a combination of cack-handed men & overstuffed drawers - it's really very sturdy.

It's short enough for your space too. I'm really happy with it Smile

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 10:42

You are a lovely lot.

Yes that LG seems to fit the bill. I did manage perfectly well for 35 years of my life without a frigging water dispenser so should probably just let go of that considering the cost and general ballache when the filter needs replacing etc.

I love how the fridges are all gently filled with elaborate gateaux and whole drawers of lemons whereas we all know mine will be stuffed to the guns with Diet Coke and mouldy cheddar.

OP posts:
abyssiniam8 · 16/03/2015 12:19

Do you have space in your kitchen for a separate water dispenser? Because i think that water dispenser takes up way too much space in the fridge, and its not even something that is used constantly.

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 12:23

Oh I didn't even know you could get them - will investigate thanks Smile

zipzap · 16/03/2015 18:20

I've just had the costco offers come through - they've got a hotpoint one at the moment that's £799 - quick look online and it's nearly £1200 in Argos for the same thing.

Worth a look around and paying the £25 (? not sure what it is if you just join for the online bit) annual fee if you like it at that price difference!

www.costco.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/cos_10,cos_10.5,cos_2.4.2/176063

They have different ones in store if you have one locally too.

tartiflette · 16/03/2015 22:56

Thank you zipzap, that is an excellent excuse for my first ever trip to Costco!

We had to replace our Samsung for the same reason and went for this Bosch KAN58A45G model as it fits the same space. 180cm tall x 90cm.

tartiflette · 18/03/2015 20:00

Are you pleased with it Sparkly?

OP posts:
SPARKLYSTARSHINESBRIGHT · 03/04/2015 23:27

Hi sorry for delay, yes we have been pleased with it, very similar to Samsung but no problems :-)
