American Fridge Freezers

The Samsung we inherited with our house has finally given up the ghost. It was a 2007/8 model with all the much publicised issues with ice building up around the back of the fridge, the water tank freezing up then splitting and leaking, and so on.

The kitchen is built around the bugger so I'm going to need to get another similar sized one, I really don't want to spend more than £1k on it (am having to use money I've been saving up to do the bathroom, sob) - can anyone recommend one? Have the issues with the old Samsungs been resolved with newer models? LG any good? Can't stretch to Neff etc I don't think.

I Have An Ice maker and water dispenser fridge down my basement. All i did is unplugged the hose. And flipped the level up in the ice maker to trick it thinking the box is full of ice. It is the only way I can turn off the ice maker.

May I ask what the average life span of the american ff is ? I have been dreaming about one but not if they only last 8 years.

ridinghighinapril · 05/04/2015 20:48

Those of you with a side by side FF - did you find the shelves in the freezer shallow? Did you find it a pain to stack food (in freezer) and find things without things falling out? Can bigger items, like a large pizza, fit in the freezer?
Do freezer drawers make it difficult to find your food?
Currently, DH and I are if differing opinions on side-by-side Vs freezer drawers!
Thanks

Yes, no problems, very similar to Samsung except it works! ;-)

Didireally my Philips American fridge freezer lasted 12 years before it broke down.
The sizings have changed and nothing would fit in the space Hmm
They were too wide or too long.
It looked like I'd have to get a fridge only- which would look really odd because there would be such a gap left in the space ( plus the thought of where I'd put the freezer in the house as there was no more room in the kitchen).
Happily I got the Phillips american style fridge freezer fixed and it's going strong a year later touch wood Grin. I had to wait weeks for the spare part but it was sooo worth it.

We have a whirlpool, it's been crap & I keep hoping it will finally die (not that we can really afford to replace it). The freezer is too narrow, I would get one with the freezer underneath next time.

hollyisalovelyname · 08/04/2015 17:38

Mine us a Phillips/ Whirlpool

Molecule · 08/04/2015 22:06

My Whirlpool was awful, for most of its life was just a cool cupboard. Now have an LG, it is better, but not brilliant, we too were limited by size. If I could I'd go for separate side by side fridge and freezer, but my whirlpool was built in.

We've got Liebherr. No idea of the cost (DH's dept) but it is very good and the customer service is brilliant. I dropped a half glass shelf when I was cleaning it and got a replacenent with no trouble. I thought I would have to buy a whole one but the very nice customer service person said they only ever sell you the bits you want, deliver quickly and very reasonable cost, c.£30?

chunkythighs · 12/04/2015 09:19

Sorry for shouting op but......DO NOT GET A HOTPOINT FRIDGE!!!!! They are crap and their customer service has to be the worst around. They will not let you book a repair on a day that suits, you are supposed to take a day off work at their bidding and eagerly wait for a text for the engineers appt.

Believe me- you WILL be calling to get it repaired.

QuiteQuietly · 13/04/2015 16:39

Definitely avoid Hotpoint - unless you have an empty life you wish to fill with pain.

hollyisalovelyname · 13/04/2015 19:41

My Hotpoint dryer has not given me any trouble in over 13 years.
I know....I'm tempting fate!!!

Oooh side by side FF are a pain in the arse - shelves too narrow and deep - I used to have to get on my knees to see into the back of the fridge Hmm

I have one similar to the OP link - it's Kitchen Aid (dont' think you can get them in UK?) and all the ice and water dispenser gubbins are hidden inside. Much better.
