Heartfelt thanks to Whoknows for running the February thread during such a stressful time for her (and to Toffee for helping out.) Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and on Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the purple prose and barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed (this is harder than you might imagine!)
(2)You are never behind; just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, regulars, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

I've had a tip run today, to get rid of a lot of cardboard packaging. Will need to go again with some other bits (old TV stand, general bin bags, etc) but it's cleared a big space!

Also need to :-
put dinner in slow cooker
get DD's dance gear and snack ready for tonight's after-school club
general tidying
zone work

Although next on my list is lunch ...

Slingclutter · 04/03/2015 17:03

Hello. We're back.

Thank you so much Toffee for running thread/posting links in my absence Thanks Wine Cake Biscuit

Hope all ok; Forgive me for not catching up right now as dd and me under attack from some sort of strange virus that causes severe headache/ pain in bottom of neck/left side of neck, left side of throat, left ear, left eye etc etc. Currently walking like a crab! Poor dh who should be the one being looked after, had to take time out of office this pm (having just got back) to take us to doc who has prescribed me bullet-like antibiotics (dd feeling a bit better today thankfully). Just about to take myself off to bed in darkened room but will bbl to post links tonight!!

Big wing flaps to everybody!

Slingclutter · 04/03/2015 17:06

Thank you for kind thoughts. Funeral went well. Weather beautiful (20°c!) (Rather old rambling priest but very kind which is the main thing.) BBL

OP posts:
Fizrim · 04/03/2015 17:55

Welcome back Sling, glad it went well. Go and get some rest, hope you and your daughter are pain-free and back to normal very soon.

elliepac · 04/03/2015 21:05

Evening all. Oftwat gone. Think it has gone well but no idea as yet. I really hope so because as a school we have worked so hard after getting hammered last time. We deserve it.

Tonight will mainly involve wine and sleep.

Back like a normal person tomorrow.

BlueEyeshadow · 04/03/2015 21:48

Wine for Ellie

SC - glad it went well, and hope you and DD feel better soon.

I've been to Zumba after missing a couple of weeks and really stiff now! Off for a soothing bath. Flying isn't happening except bare minimum of laundry and food. Hey ho.

Swanhildapirouetting · 04/03/2015 22:56

SC I'm so sorry you sound so ill. What a very long and exhausting week it must have been. Kind priest must have made such a difference though. You will remember that. So sad how many funerals suddenly come upon us as we get older - everyone reminds of us of other sad funerals. I cannot remember any funerals of people I loved when I was young Sad

Meanwhile we had another good day. Very relaxed. Lots of time outdoors. Did some good driving round lots of dead ends and one systems (very educational for me Wink Ds2 and I developed a running gag about bollards and whether we were pointing west or east (I certainly had no idea - he seemed to be able to tell)

Housekeeping - zilch. Did some washing. I think the dw is broken again but I cannot face dealing with it. Maybe I destroyed it last time by pouring Mr Muscle down it.

Helped at Beavers. Did some minor HE activities (ds copied out a poem and read it aloud to me) Taught him some life skills to do with bedmaking and boiling pasta Smile

ToffeeWhirl · 04/03/2015 22:58

SC - glad funeral went well, but so sorry to hear you and DD are ill Sad. Am happy to carry on with links until you feel better...

Well done on getting through inspection, ellie.

Busy day, so am falling into bed early tonight.

Fizrim · 04/03/2015 23:26

So, managed to take the large cardboard boxes and packing materials to the tip today, which has helped with the space issue! No zone work though - always another day.

Now, just need to get the iron on the Book Day costume and then I'll be off to bed. See you tomorrow.

ToffeeWhirl · 05/03/2015 05:55

Woke up at 4ish and have been wide awake ever since - so annoying. Anyway, I've given up now and am downstairs having breakfast. No chance of a nap later as there's too much happening today, including another visit to DS1's prospective school this afternoon, fingers crossed.

SC - hope you don't mind, but I'll take the liberty of posting today's links as I'm here anyway. I hope you're feeling better this morning.

Babystep Number 5 is here: turn those negative voices into positives.

It's Thursday: errand day.

Today's mission is here: put away all the coats, shoes and books in your hallway.

The flight plan, with the rundown of today's routine, is here.

Slingclutter · 05/03/2015 07:09

Oh Toffee that is so very kind of you Thanks

I've just come on here now (late!) to do links and you have already done them! Total bliss as am still feeling a bit grim and dd still ill too.
Thaaaank youuuu Thanks. Can now sink back in to the duvet without worrying!!

Good luck to you and your ds1 at his new school today!! [Fingers and toes crossed for you!!]

Thank you everyone for the lovely 'welcome backs' too!! Feel much cheerier having read them! Promise to be bbl to catch up properly with everyone.

In the meantime,

How stressful about you and ds2 losing one another Swan but glad all aright in the end! Priest was over 70 and was looking after 3 parishes all by himself (driving miles and miles each day). Totally exhausted poor man.

Well done for surviving Oftwat Ellie!! [wheels vat of Wine over for weekend]

Top decluttering Fizrim!

Hello to Pegleg!

And Big waves to Whoknows Blue Bitchy Castle Minisok Dogsbum Greymalkin¨Faffer and everyone else!

[SC lurches back to bed]

PegLegAntoine · 05/03/2015 07:25

Yesterday evening was not exactly productive! Really achy.

Yesterday:
ta da
Hospital for ECG fitting
Read more
Finish packing
Order clubcard vouchers for trip
Return DVD
Decide on simple WBD costumes (not compulsory as HEing but DD wants to be Arrietty when we visit the library to see my colleagues' costumes!)
Visit Primark for the above
Put last DVDs away
Decide what hours I'm doing at work on Saturday

Not doing a proper list today as I won't have wifi later but I need to go to the hospital, then the library, then home to make sure we have everything including a packed lunch for the train.

Have a great couple of days everyone :)

ToffeeWhirl · 05/03/2015 09:13

Happy to help, SC. Glad you've gone back to bed. You sound utterly exhausted, poor thing.

Peg - looks like you've been very busy. Hope the achiness eases.

Managed to catch some more sleep Smile. MIL is coming round for tea at 11 and my DM is here - always a stressful situation to have those two together, as they are chalk and cheese.

BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 05/03/2015 11:24

ta da
make 2 pints of Jelly
put ingrediants into bread machine
load and set dw to run
hoover out car
remove field from car and discover its natural colouring
deliver car to mechanic
deal with child who is off school
empty ironing basket
folding
empty dryer and refill ironing and to be folded baskets
put 1st batch of sofa throws on to wash
boil up some hard boiled eggs for homemade mayo for lunch
create a mending pile

to do
turn dough into cinamon rolls
have a dig about in the office to see if can find some material for a project

BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 05/03/2015 11:25

However it is already starting to feel like one of these kinda days:

March of the Fledglings 2015
BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 05/03/2015 13:47

I appear to have 6 meters of white cotton material. I clearly bought this for a project. I have no bloody idea what it was though

Slingclutter · 05/03/2015 15:37

Hello, have just spent the past 5 and a half hours in a deep sleep with dd sleeping at the foot of my bed like a puppy! (Albeit a rather large, long puppy with sticking-out feet !!)

Woken up feeling a bit better. Well, thank heavens dreadful neck/headache has gone although still a bit shivery/achey over all. Sadly, not losing weight as starvingly hungry despite temperature. Wierd.

Dh travelling today of course so must soldier on. Have emptied dishwasher, and wm, just about to have bath. Then on to tottery ta da list depending on how I'm feeling.

Also trying to gear dd up (in encouraging way) to get back to school tomorrow. Bit of a disaster to be missing so much at this stage and it wasn't long ago that she was ill with flu either. But she is looking very pale and wan. Oh dear.

Was material to line something Bitchy (that's what I usually use white cotton for anyway)? Arf at removing field from car Grin I loved saving Mr Banks btw!! And arf at melted chocolate in dressing gown pocket down thread!! Grin Did I mention the time dd put mini egg under covers on my side of the bed one Easter? I didn't notice it Biscuit of course and woke up the next morning with worrying-looking brown patch on sheets!! Shock Dh and I leapt out of bed pretty sharpish before with caught a distinctive whiff of Lindt!!! Grin Dd is still sniggering about that one!!

Hope school visit goes well/is going well today Toffee and good luck with battle of the mother-in-laws! (Ours couldn't really be in the same room as one another although they were forced to be on a few occasions out of politeness.) Huge thanks again for links Thanks. And here's a Wine for tonight when yr challenging day is over! And "wow"!! at your 'before' and 'after' pics!!! (Toying with idea of using that technique with my home office!! Not sure I am brave enough though!!)

Fizrim don't be too down on yourself about zone-work. It definitely produces results if you stick to it, but I can't honestly say I do it very often or very consistently; Flylady is all about giving yourself a big pat on the back for what you are achieving ie the decluttering!

Ditto ¨Blue laundry and food definitely counts as "proper" Flying !!! As does keeping yourself fit!!

And yes, planning also counts Minisok!!! (See Tuesday daily focus!) Well done with all that decluttering and your Flying start!! Take it steady! Small steps and all that!

PegLeg having read down the thread about POTS etc, I now remember who you are! Great to have you back! Hope all goes well at hospital and with ECG fitting.

Interested to read about DVD storage. We've been talking about getting rid of all our CDs in playroom which is on very over-crowded, cheap, rickety wobbling shelving ; dh says we can access all music through YOutube or Spotify instead. Certainly would create space. But I have rather eclectic selection of CDs that I'm not certain I would find on line. Might give it a three month trial or something and see if viable ... .

Like the sound of your early life skills lesson Swan! My dnephew could have done with a few of those before going off to uni! Hope your fil is recovering now and well done re: kitchen curtain and upholstery progress! (Getting your dh to peruse curtain fabric certainly major and impressive achievement in my book!) Re 50th: think family and friends trump camping and spas and retro tea parties any day imho!!

[strong espresso for Ellie in case needed today following Oftwat ordeal]

Whoknows and others - also interested to read about freezing mash as I have never had much success with it (has always gone a bit gloopy). So very useful to have these tips as it can be a bit hassley to make from scratch, partic if in a rush. Only tip I know is to add hot milk when reheating (not from frozen) as cold can make it go lumpy.

Whoknows and Linzer both of your dd's hair sounds lovely!! My dd could honestly have a bat's nest in her hair and she wouldn't notice (or care if she did!!). Cue lots of stressy brushing and combing every morning before school which she loathes, and as for twice-weekly ballet bun ... .

Book that mammogram Linzer!!!! [stern look over top of pince nez]

Take care of yourself Dogsbum and try and avoid lifting that hoover!! [another stern look over pince nez]

Did you fill in the application for diploma course yet Greymalkin ??[enquiring look over pince nez]

Feetheart how are school disco plans progressing?

[Did you all notice the not so subtle gentle application of Fat Fairy boot in last four posts??] [Now just need to do the same for myself now Blush ]

I envy you your country views Mrs Mook!!

Big waves to Engels who I managed to miss out last night!!
And big waves to Castle too!

Hope your wee Fly babies have started to sleep thorugh a bit!

And big wing flaps to Rollermum and anyone else I have inadvertently missed!

Happy Flying everybody!! [says me, still in my dressing gown!! Just about to dive in to bath!!]

OP posts:
Slingclutter · 05/03/2015 15:46

Oh dear, missed out Shannara and MTWTFSS too!!

Sorry if anyone else missed, still feeling a bit bleary in the head [nothing new there then]

OP posts:
BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 05/03/2015 15:59

Also ta da
2 more load of laundry
30mins rummaging about in office
1hr of ironing random bits of material
stuff pumpkins, chirstmas puds, zombies and stars
Fasten off a ridiculously large amount of ends of various knitted projects
hand stitch some detail before attaching bits together with some fabric glue
Cook up cinamon rolls
Ice the damn things
deal with ds who should have been in school judging by the look of him
Write card for present ready for nxt week

ToffeeWhirl · 05/03/2015 16:41

DS1 managed his trip to school today Grin. Am especially pleased because he started the day by preparing me for him not going ("I feel sick", etc), but actually listened when I suggested he was hungry and even went on to eat a good lunch later. Am also pleased because I gave him a pep talk about making eye contact, smiling and replying in sentences and although he responded to this with a grunt, he then went on to beam at the SENDCO and really try to engage. I was so chuffed.

The meeting of the mothers was ok, although I was on tenterhooks all the time in case one of them said something inappropriate to the other. Phew. Sorry to hear your mother and MIL were so unfriendly, SC.

DS2 has just suggested to me that I have a nap so he can use the computer. What a brilliant suggestion Grin.

Slingclutter · 05/03/2015 18:05

Yay! That is fabulous news Toffee!!! Bloody well done to your ds1!! That took such courage on his behalf!!!

Glad also that mils didn't come to blows!! (To be fair ours had the most ridiculously strong characters; so it was never going to work.)

Well done re: your productive day Bitchy

If no one minds, I'm going to post the links early. It's 7pm here, and as dd is still ill, and dh is away, we are going to have an early supper and go to bed straight fter Crufts; which will give dd the best chance of getting to school tomorrow.

Have a good evening everyone!

Baby-step no 6, for Friday 6 March 2015 is learning about hot spots.

We are still in Zone 1: the entrance, porch and dining room here.

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 1 is here.

Friday's mission (last mission in Zone 1 this month!) is here! Whey hey! Decide on your own mission and do it!! [SC tries to sound all cheery and encouraging]]

The daily focus for Friday is sorting and decluttering your purses, handbags and cars

The monthly habit for March is the controversial one about getting dressed, putting on a bit of slap, wearing lace up shoes indoors etc as soon as you get up.

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

I don't know about you, but I'm quite glad to see the back of this week!! You're doing brilliantly everyone! Keep going!!

OP posts:
Swanhildapirouetting · 05/03/2015 20:44

That's brilliant about the school visit Toffee it shows he really does want to go.
Nothing much happened today. Man came to survey site for garden room.
I cooked some chicken legs
I took ds to Judo
I drove a lot Grin

dw still broken though. Luckily we still have the old one where the dryer was meant to go in utility. We use it so much! So much for the horrid new integrated one which always goes wrong...Hmm Our old Hotpoint is still chugging along in the old kitchen (now utility)

Still have to choose curtain material for kitchen though. Am lost really. Old curtains were a lovely William Morris linen with red on white background (willow leaf) but not really very suitable for kitchen (it used to be a playroom/sitting room) But now I'm not sure what colour will go in a white room with cream cupboards Iznik tiles in blue and green over cooker and a red stripe round the splashback. And a dark blue cooker. Confused Beige? Floaty blue and green? Cream? So echoey in here we need curtains to soak up some of the noise and keep heat in in winter but there are simple roller blinds already. A meanish bay window with long windows.

done
transferred all washing up to utility
cooked supper
picked up kids
HE PE!!!!
drank wine

BlessThisMess · 05/03/2015 20:48

Hi all, sorry I've been AWOL! That damn cold last week has turned into sinusitis so am still feeling under the weather, though not as bad as SC by the sound of it. Hope DD is well enough for school tomorrow.

Bitchy it always exhausts me just reading your lists!

Hi to everyone else! I don't feel as though I'm achieving much of anything atm. DD1 has not settled in school since half-term. She says she noticed how much better she felt when she didn't have to go, and hates being there. I don't see how we can keep trying to put a square peg in a round hole so think she will be out for home edding quite soon if I can just get DH to agree. My dissertation is crawling along appallingly slowly and I fear I am going to be in a mad stressful panic for most of May and June!

My fluttering has not reached pre-half-term levels yet and everything just feels a bit chaotic.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 05/03/2015 20:59

Nothing much achieved again today. Hooks put up for dc's book bag. Car cleaned inside and out, and everything tidied properly instead of shoved in bags. Actually, have achieved more than I thought.

Bad news is washing machine appears to be broken. Drum is sitting in a funny position. I did take out extra insurance type thing for it to be repaired or replaced so will be ringing them in the morning and seeing when they can sort it for me. It's been working overtime lately, and dh has been extra spinning everything when he's washed to reduce drying time. Well now we've reduced washing time!!!
