Heartfelt thanks to Whoknows for running the February thread during such a stressful time for her (and to Toffee for helping out.) Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and on Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the purple prose and barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed (this is harder than you might imagine!)
(2)You are never behind; just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, regulars, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

And as for the practical adaptations (thank you Bitchy Wink ) we have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches therein on previous threads. We are all agreed on two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the Flylady system, some of the baby-steps may seem a bit strange or irrelevant to you, so we encourage everyone to adapt the underlying system to suit their own home and individual schedules.

Thanks for the new thread SC and thanks also the WhoKnows for the last one.

I've had a busy few days flying along but CBA to list everything right now. I will however say that I am decluttering with eBay.

Hope you all have good weekends

Greymalkin · 27/02/2015 20:24

Has anyone else been brave enough to 'like' the fat fairy's Facebook page? I just have and am sort of expecting to be bombarding with updates... Will let you know how it goes....

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/02/2015 20:27

No, I would be a tad embarrassed if my RL friends caught me on Flylady FB page!

BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 27/02/2015 21:37

Based on what goes on in the timeline of my fb I think that I would be up for an assessment by a mental health team if I did that grey HmmBlushGrin

I am a more productive day than I expected I would have. It is kinda nice, but I am concerned about fall out and burnout tomo.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 28/02/2015 06:43

Morning. Dh has booked Monday off work to help us get on top of some of the house :) he will so regret it...

MTWTFSS · 28/02/2015 08:18

1. start or repeat baby steps

Please can someone link where I can find a list of the "baby steps"

Thank you :)

LinzerTorte · 28/02/2015 09:10

MTWTFSS You don't need to know what the baby steps are in advance as SC (or, I think, Toffee for the couple of days when SC is away) will be posting a link to the day's baby step every day. However, they're here if you'd like a sneak peek.

Slingclutter · 28/02/2015 10:19

Good morning all!

Hi to Greymalkin (Let us know how fb goes!)

A warm welcome to MTWTFSS. More info about baby steps (yuck- hate that term) here !

Linzer thanks for v. efficient answering of qs! I'm late 'on the job' today Smile Have a good w/e!

Bitchy Hope you can take it steady today. Didn't you have, at one point, an at-a-glance version of the baby steps, where they were all written out on one page (ie no need to click on each separate link). I've looked at Flylady site map but can't find it. Did it come from another source I wonder (app?)?

BBL to post links for tomorrow! In the meantime, enjoy your family fun days everyone!

I swear on my life that I am staying. If I do disappear please feel free to pm me and tell me to get my sorry arse into gear and get back...because obviously you miss me that muchWinkGrin.

Thanks to whoknows for feb and sc for March.

Loves you all.

Slingclutter · 28/02/2015 16:12

Luffs you too Ellie!! I'm not going to welcome you back because you are a big part of this thread, whether you post or not x.

Ok everyone [rolls up sleeves] Ready for tomorrow? Pinch, punch, first of the month and all that... . Don your tan tights and lace up shoes (or, er, don't Wink ), grab that purple feather duster, and here we go ... .

Baby-step no 1, for Sunday 1st March 2015 is here. Shine your sink! Also included in link is a long explanation (for newcomers) about baby-steps in general, and detailed instructions on how to shine your sink!

Tomorrow we are officially starting in Zone 1: the entrance, porch and dining room here.

Newcomers: here is more general info about zones. This currently shows Feb zones, but if you wait a day or so, it should have updated itself and will show March zone info. More useful info here too!

Best to suit zones to suit your own home. Or use the Flylady model to start, and then adapt as the entire system becomes clearer to you.

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 1 is here.

No missions on a Sunday.

The daily focus for Sunday is renewing your spirit ie doing something that will refresh you for the week ahead.

The monthly habit for March is a controversial one! ie getting dressed, putting on a bit of slap, wearing lace up shoes indoors etc. The link explains the reasons behind this tenet. Some of us on here find it useful, others definitely don't, so suit yourself! As it is now an ingrained habit for me (and I have to contend with dodgy nails sticking out of floorboards underfoot) I will personally be continuing with the habit for Feb ie decluttering for 15 mins every day (as I had a big fat fail with that last month!).

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

Have as good a start to the month as you can fledglings! And remember, this isn't about perfection. Just doing a little consistently, every day, can work wonders!

Minisoksmakehardwork · 28/02/2015 16:30

Dts had a nap this aernoon. So while older dc put all the books and toys away that they had scattered everywhere, in the interests of making sure it didn't disintegrate into ww3' I grabbed the polish and cleaned the tv and unit. Removed 2 discs from the wii (it may now be knackered) and hoovered the lounge. The tv and unit was thick with dust and gunk from tiny hands. The dust had covered up spilt drink splashesBlush

But it is so much better now it's done. Even the picture is clearer!

Other than that it's been dc homework and now film time while waiting for dh to come home with fish and chips.

All in all quite a nice day spending some time with the kids. Even if they were doing things they didn't really want to do.

BitchyDoesWitchyThings · 28/02/2015 16:51

I do, i can hunt it out and pm it at some point if it is needed, but the fat fairy has tweaked her babysteps order a bit since i made that list.

FafferTime · 28/02/2015 16:56

Ooh! so happy to find this thread. I love flylady chat rooms for motivation but can't access them at the moment.

FafferTime · 28/02/2015 16:58

currently working on the kitchen.

Slingclutter · 28/02/2015 18:04

Congratulations on a fantabulous decluttering session Minisok! Enjoy yoru f&c!

Good point Bitchy I had forgotten that. Probably best to leave it if they are not current.

You are very welcome Faffertime!

Bit late but we are all finally set for crack of sparrows departure tomorrow; shoes buffed, suits pressed, hair washed etc etc. Just drying dh's underpants!! And dd, bless her, is cooking supper tonight from her new cookery bks. (Not the best evening to be doing it but trip ahead is not going to be bundle of laughs so good distraction.)

Went to osteopath with her this afternoon and he is puzzled by bone over-growth but says her pelvis is retracted on one side and that could be the cause. She has a set of exercises to do every day and before sport that will help with that. Fortunately, he said it was still OK to continue with ballet for the moment.

OP posts:
Slingclutter · 28/02/2015 18:06

Oh dear. Can hear raised voices in the kitchen. DD wanted to do this on her own, but dh has butted in and taken over. He just can't help himself!

Greymalkin · 28/02/2015 18:22

Wingflaps to you all, hello Faffertime

Bit of a lazy day here flying wise. Just done some of the basics really...

We've had a family trip to the zoo which was lovely, although a bit difficult at times as we're trying to get DS to give up his dummy and he isn't too pleased about it.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to make a cushion cover with a zip for 'renewing my spirit', although I suspect it may be rather stressful! I really want to get into sewing properly and do more that just repair rips in clothes and sew on name tapes. Wish me luck...

FafferTime · 28/02/2015 18:44

Good luck greymalkin!

I've done 15 mins declutter.
