Ok. Welcome to the January Fledglings thread. Before we get started we have Some important notices

  1. The fledglings are a long running thread, We are might seem clicky but that is what happens when some of us have been on the same thread for up to 5 years
  2. We are rather partial to new blood Pull up a seat in the naughty corner Grin
  3. Don't assume you can march in and impose your way. We follow the fly lady way and we adapt it to suit our lives and needs. You are welcome to come join us for support and chat, don't assume you know best.
  4. There is more to us than cleaning. If you want to be obsessive about cleaning you will find us and and our interpretation of fly lady frustrating. You might be happier else where.

Right, as harsh as it might seem, it is important to get that out of the way as we expect this January thread to be busier with newbies and there has been problems in the past.

So the fly lady system there are rules and we have adaptations.

  1. NO perfectionism!!!
  2. Something is better than nothing and sometimes good enough really is good enough.
3.This is not about the housework, it is about having more time to do fun stuff. Don't ever feel guilty about doing stuff with the kids over doing the housework. The kids are more important.

And the practical adaptations. We have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches within on previous threads. We are all agree two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the fly lady system there are some of the babysteps and things that are advised that are either "huh, why?" or just don't fit in with the household. We advise a pinch of salt and discretion with a dash of reality thrown in. E.g. if you are a no shoes household then clearly the wearing shoes in the house part of babystep 2 is going to make you go ShockHmm This is where adaptations come in and if past threads are to be gone on this will be discussed and there are various takes on it as and when they arise.

Also for the over enthusiastic newbies to the fly lady site and system everything you need will be posted here in the form of links. There are 3 levels:
Newbie: babysteps - get into these habbit
student: Missions and babysteps once the habits are habit the missions are a piece of cake.
Expert: deep cleaning, missions and babysteps - forget this if you have clutter, seriously.
Oh and for the love of all sanity do not subscribe to the email alerts. Seriously. Just don't.

Jump on board, buckle in and lets kick the butt of January.
Bitchy special brew on the naughty corner bar, natch WinkGrin
do we warn the newbies about the special brew or let them find out for themselves?

Hello!
Thank you for the good wishes for DS, he was fine in the end, although school were very nice about it and said they probably would have sent him home if I had taken him in, so at least I don't have to worry about the school thinking I was keeping him off for nothing :)

Bless - sorry about the stress with your DH. They are all being a pain at the moment, I think Hmm
SC - your poor DD, flu is awful, I really hope she recovers quickly!
Toffee - Happy Birthday Grin Cake
Bitchy - good luck with the craft project, hope it's going well (especially the end fastening!) :)
Bless - good luck with dissertation! What is it on? If it helps, when I was at Uni, one of my friends managed to write 7000 words on the last day before hers was due in... So doable, but not recommended Wink
Swan - glad you got through the meeting, it sounds very stressful :(

So, my todos/tadas:
Done:
Morning routine
Finished stuffing envelopes for PTA letter - all done and handed over to PTA chair now, if she wants anymorem I just have to print out more :)

To do:
Afternoon and evening routines

I've not done any zone cleaning the past couple of days due to routine being disrupted, going to finish it off tomorrow though, got to clean the bathroom, it's at times like this that I am happy we just have one small bathroom in the house Grin

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2015 16:46

Thank you, Whispers!

As if to bring home to me the enormity of becoming 50, a large chunk of tooth has just fallen out - so I will have to spend part of my 50th birthday having my tooth repaired. Am not sure whether to laugh or cry!

Weakly gave in to the temptation to buy some L'Oreal cream that promised instant tautening of the skin and magically erased wrinkles: it didn't work Sad. Why do I never learn?

ta da

Room rescues downstairs
Walked to cobblers to collect repaired boots
Checked that pub where I'm holding my party had my food/drink order ok - it didn't Shock. But it's sorted now.
MIL called round
Lunch
Difficult time getting DS1 to go for another visit to his new school
Tour of school (phew - success)
Home
Walked up to primary to collect DS2's friend
Playdate

No time for home ed today, so DS2 is having a day off.

to do

Cook dinner
Cook beef ragu for tomorrow
Bake birthday cake for myself with DS2
Change cat litter
Washing
Evening routines

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2015 16:47

SC - poor DD! Hope she gets the all clear from the doc.

Slowcommotion · 15/01/2015 16:54

Thanks Toffee doc examined her very thoroughly, but didn't seem too worried, tis definitely the flu. Has signed her off until Monday.

So pleased to hear that your ds1 made it to his new school again, despite anxiety!! Well done him!!!

Oh no to tooth repair on your birthday!!!! Hope you will be able to imbibe!!

Waves to Whispers glad ds ok now!

LinzerTorte · 15/01/2015 18:31

SC Good to have it confirmed that it's "just" the flu, but it still must be miserable for your DD - and for you too, being unable to get out. How frustrating re the client who owes you money; I can definitely see your point of view as I certainly wouldn't do any more work for a customer who hadn't paid me. I also know how difficult it can be with a DH who travels a lot and no family nearby, although thankfully DH travels far less nowadays and I also find it easier now that the DC are a little older. Mind you, I must admit to being slightly annoyed to discover that he's away next Tuesday as I really wanted to go to the cinema (which shows I have nothing to complain about really!) - our local cinema shows a film in the original version, i.e. not dubbed, every Tuesday and The Theory of Everything is on next week.

Toffee Sympathies wrt the tooth; I think I posted about my filling falling out at Christmas and I'm really not looking forward to my appointment (first of two) next week.

Feel like I'm finally starting to make progress with the paperwork decluttering as I managed to get quite a bit done while supervising homework this afternoon. Threw away a whole folder of leaflets labelled "Germany: travel" - we haven't lived in Germany for 14 years now and don't have any plans to visit in the foreseeable future either.

BlueEyeshadow · 15/01/2015 20:01

Totally winning at errands day today...

Ta da!
Swish and swipe
Laundry done, dry and away
Wrapped DS1's presents
Wrapped pass the parcel
Texted plumber
Swimming
Grocery shopping done and away
Picked up last few party bits
Party bags stuffed
Made rice crispy cakes with DS1
Cooked dinner

to do
Clear up kitchen
Tidy up a bit
Discuss website with friend who looks after it for me

DS1's party isn't till Saturday but it's complicated by travelling for DH's grandad's funeral, which means an overnight stay at MIL's tomorrow. Going to be a weird birthday for the poor lad but can't be helped.

Sorry to hear about tooth, Toffee, and happy birthday, and glad school visit went ok in the end. Cake Wine

Get well soon to your DD, SC. It must be very hard with DH away so much and don't blame you for being miffed. Also not sure about doing work for people who owe you money...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/01/2015 20:41

We've got a birthday party to do on Saturday too Goth - I dread them. the the other one's in a fortnight, I'm always glad to get them out of the way. I feel bad for feeling that way, but they stress me endlessly.

Feeling all rattled tonight, my car was pranged a couple of hours ago, nothing major, but it's going to need repairs, insurance etc. The other person stopped and gave me their details, have to get the ball rolling on that tomorrow, could really have done without it and feeling a bit shaky.

So, an even bigger to do list for tomorrow, involving cake baking, party bag stuffing, phone calls, probably a quick visit to the local body shop for an estimate, but the insurers normally want to use one that's miles away. Oh and helping at a PTA event and going to DD's class assembly, just as well it's my day off work.

Have only scanned the thread, but Happy Birthday to Toffee and hope DD starts to feel better soon SC.

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2015 20:42

The shadow of 50 is looming and I'm not ready for it Sad. I'm not sure I want to say I'm in my 50s - I have only just got used to saying I'm in my 40s. And DH (who went through all this last year) is not helping Angry as he just thinks it's hilarious!

Thank you for the birthday good wishes, Blue .

And yes, I will definitely be imbibing, SC. In fact, I'm practising tonight.

Linzer - thank you for the sympathies about the tooth. It is making me feel particularly decrepit.

elliepac · 15/01/2015 21:27

Shit day. I am at a loss as to what to do with DD/how to help her, the situation is just getting worse. Will explain tomorrow when i am less emotional.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/01/2015 21:30

I think the Fledglings need a big collective hug tonight

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 15/01/2015 21:33

Sorry to hear about the tooth toffee

Still working away on the craft project, various unpicking and miscounting at a previous stage has delayed progress and it MUST be finished tonight so am busy trying to finish the edge and then hit the 2nd to last stage of fastening off that I partially skipped in order to get the mail bulk of it done.

In the meantime links:

Lol whoknows But you point is valid. Seems like a lot of the fledglings are going through are a rough patch. :(

Swanhildapirouetting · 15/01/2015 21:58

First Ellie so sorry. Maybe she just misses you too much when she is with her Dad in her old home? Sorry if I have got wrong end of stick. You are a heroine to cope with all this and job and other people's children into the bargain.

Toffee I think 50 when your children are still young does feel quite odd. It is like you cannot do all fun the things you associate with 50 year olds (expensive clothes and/or rambling/free time) but you are not quite agile or fresh enough to do the things you associate with 30 year olds. The only thing that helps is that most of my friends seem to be nearly 50 too and some of them have even younger children.

Whoknows oh dear - I am so glad you are alright after the crash. What a shock. Thanks

done
well, today has been quite mellow one way or another
house still a mess but no one judgey has been over Blush
saw friend for coffee impromptu - long chat about teens - she was having troubles too
ds2 did quite a lot of work - Moby Dick seems to be quite exciting and we did Ratios,
bin out
recycling out
washing in
NOT MUCH ELSE
lots of walking
picked up dd half way
cooked roast chicken and roast potatoes and peas
ds1 in a very good mood and said he was working very hard

Castlelough I hope you are alright. Sending good thoughts to you and of course to Engels and lots of virtual chocolates and snuggly blankets for any low patches

Slowcommotion · 15/01/2015 21:58

Yes, I think everyone deserves a big Wine tonight....[opens secret keg hidden in naughty corner water feature]

Arf at reaching out with wings Whoknows Grin!!
So sorry to hear about your prang though. Always a bit of a shock, however minor. Is that the car that has just been MOT'd?? Hope you are not out of pocket over it. Good luck with what does indeed sound like a humungous day tomorrow.

oh no Ellie that sounds very tough x

Cheers for tonight/tomorrow Toffee!! And don't mean this flippantly, but something would be amiss if you were ready for it ifyswim!! Have fun tonight!!

Sorry to hear about your dh's grandad Blue and safe travelling. Congrats on v. productive day too.

Blue and Whoknows - think you are both saints to be hosting parties so soon after Christmas!

Linzer travelling dh's always, always go away on a trip when one has something nicely planned!! It's sod's law!! Well done wrt paper decluttering!!

Good luck finishing the project tonight Bitchy and thanks for links!

G'night all and cheers Wine!!

Slowcommotion · 15/01/2015 22:00

x posts Swan

Think you are spot on (as usual) about the fifty thing combined with young dc.

So pleased to hear that you have had a much deserved mellow day, complete with friend and good natter. Nowt like it.

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2015 23:05

So sorry you're having such a hard time with DD, ellie Sad.

Yes, swan, hadn't thought of it that way. And have just realised that my 40s, when I assumed I'd go back to work, were spent bringing up small children and dealing with DS1's SNs. Not to mention redundancy, bereavements and other life crises. It seems to have gone past so quickly.

Who - sorry about the crash. Am not surprised you feel shaken up.

SC - thank you. Party is tomorrow, not tonight. Tonight is my time for pampering (am going to do my nails tonight, instead of leaving them too late as usual).

Best of luck on crafty stuff, bitchy.

Must get some beauty sleep soon. Sorely needed. Night fledglings.

Just running in to say that I can do the links for tomorrow too, Bitchy, if that will help in any way, it sounds like you have got a lot on your plate today Sad

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/01/2015 07:22

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOFFEE

I'm up slightly too early for me, but for some reason ds1 was woken by me waking up dd and has gone ready for school like some sort of automaton without any prompting or chivvying so it is very peaceful here (for the moment)

done
two children to school
carried some off dd's washing pile downstairs
let dh sleep in
showered
ds2 has taken my advice and got some of his football clothes ready last night Shock

todo
unload dw
get dressed
feed cats
take car to garage for service
take some stuff out of car in bin liners
find MOT cert
taxi back from garage

deal with cleaning lady (ie: sort downstairs so she can actually get into utility)
take ds2 to home ed football
buy dd a new smaller jumper (she is insisting on everything being skintight)
research whaling
redo Highest Common Factor
discuss Newton
make chicken soup with rest of chicken?
get ds1 stuff ready for Confirmation outward bound course tomorrow (rope climbing team building etc)
buy packed lunch stuff for him??

start thinking about gardening a bit more
(have started on a new gardening thread as an incentive)

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/01/2015 09:30

oh dear I definitely got too early

feel like I cannot face the more organised parts of today and have cancelled car service Sad
cleaning lady has a pile of ironing so perhaps I will be able to tackle utility then

and ds2 - I need to find him some tracksuit bottoms for football from the laundry heap Hmm

also desperately need to buy some new underwear as I don't seem to have any socks tights or pants Confused

added to which I cannot face the thought of meeting up SIL this morning and ds2 running riot in her house (she is under a fair amount of stress) but not sure how best to put this to her..

done
have got dressed after going back to bed again Hmm

sleep is my nemesis - I see why I felt so bright and chipper yesterday - just a question of sleep

StillWearingOddSocks · 16/01/2015 09:31

Happy birthday toffee - I'm an awful lurker & un-flyer

ToffeeWhirl · 16/01/2015 09:40

Thank you, Swan and Still. Was woken up by the dentist ringing to change my appointment to 10.30. DH has brought me a cup of tea in bed and I have opened some cards and checked for messages online. All very cheering. DFriend sent me an online quiz about anti-ageing Wink.

~H~a~p~p~y~ ~B~i~r~t~h~d~a~y~ ~T~o~f~f~e~e~!~

Thanks whispers. Pressure not so bad just ran out of time with having been so ill this week. Hard to get projects completed when you spend 3 days completely wiped out. Hmm Thankfully this weekend will be a very relaxing event and I shall be spoilt rotten once I arrive at my destination. And I have decided that what gets done gets done and what doesn't will wait. I can finish off the ends on sat morning before delivering one blanket in the afternoon. I checked laundry situation and I only need to do 1 load and most of it is already folded (with exception of socks). Ironing will only be what is needed. Taking this point of view definitely helps. Otoh I would love to get it all done cos I am unrealistic like that BlushGrin remember i did say i had a problem with being a perfectionist
