Ok. Welcome to the January Fledglings thread. Before we get started we have Some important notices

  1. The fledglings are a long running thread, We are might seem clicky but that is what happens when some of us have been on the same thread for up to 5 years
  2. We are rather partial to new blood Pull up a seat in the naughty corner Grin
  3. Don't assume you can march in and impose your way. We follow the fly lady way and we adapt it to suit our lives and needs. You are welcome to come join us for support and chat, don't assume you know best.
  4. There is more to us than cleaning. If you want to be obsessive about cleaning you will find us and and our interpretation of fly lady frustrating. You might be happier else where.

Right, as harsh as it might seem, it is important to get that out of the way as we expect this January thread to be busier with newbies and there has been problems in the past.

So the fly lady system there are rules and we have adaptations.

  1. NO perfectionism!!!
  2. Something is better than nothing and sometimes good enough really is good enough.
3.This is not about the housework, it is about having more time to do fun stuff. Don't ever feel guilty about doing stuff with the kids over doing the housework. The kids are more important.

And the practical adaptations. We have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches within on previous threads. We are all agree two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the fly lady system there are some of the babysteps and things that are advised that are either "huh, why?" or just don't fit in with the household. We advise a pinch of salt and discretion with a dash of reality thrown in. E.g. if you are a no shoes household then clearly the wearing shoes in the house part of babystep 2 is going to make you go ShockHmm This is where adaptations come in and if past threads are to be gone on this will be discussed and there are various takes on it as and when they arise.

Also for the over enthusiastic newbies to the fly lady site and system everything you need will be posted here in the form of links. There are 3 levels:
Newbie: babysteps - get into these habbit
student: Missions and babysteps once the habits are habit the missions are a piece of cake.
Expert: deep cleaning, missions and babysteps - forget this if you have clutter, seriously.
Oh and for the love of all sanity do not subscribe to the email alerts. Seriously. Just don't.

Jump on board, buckle in and lets kick the butt of January.
Bitchy special brew on the naughty corner bar, natch WinkGrin
do we warn the newbies about the special brew or let them find out for themselves?

Ooh, new thread! Thank you Bitchy and thank you Goth for December.

pushmepullyou · 31/12/2014 17:48

I'm in. Good job that anything is better than nothing - sadly with DS in hospital over Christmas it has been mostly nothing here recently! He's much better now so need to get back on the wagon, primarily with decluttering for January at least.

Big wing flaps to fledglings old and new Smile

PositiveAttitude · 31/12/2014 17:53

Just thought I would pop along and wish all you lovely ladies and the not so lovely too!!! Wink a very happy 2015. If this thread goes mega like a normal January thread I have as much chance of keeping up with you all as a snowball has in hell, but I will see how it goes!

Massive waves to SC and all the other "oldies" on here.

I think I need a jug of some special brew for tonight. I am in the middle of cooking a roast for 17 people......the only saving grace is that we are not eating it here, so the place is ok looking like a nuclear bomb has gone off. I just have to commandeer DH to carry all the food round to a neighbour at the appropriate time. He is grumping about not wanting to be social and i am *** off that I am cooking and have now it has been assumed that I will be taxi at the end for people living over the other side of town. Just what I need at the end of an evening......I was looking forward to crawling home and getting into my bed.....now I am taxi-ing loads of kids home that will all be knackered, argumentative, crying, whining, snotty.........oh I am just a grumpy old woman now mine are all older!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 31/12/2014 18:05

I am feeling equally grumpy tonight PA Is it bedtime yet?

Happy New Year lovely fledglings. It is fair to say that 2014 has not been a
vintage year chez elliepac. However, I am beginning the new year feeling more ready for a fresh start than I have. I am happy with decisions I have made and I am in a good place mentally. 2015 promises a new beginning for me and one that I am ready to embrace. Luffs you all.

Thanks Bitchy Thanks and to Goth for December.

Happy New Year everyone. Here's to 2015 Wine

Lovely to see you PA and pmpy.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 31/12/2014 19:56

Florentina this is a thread about house work and a system for getting housework as a habit and something you do without thinking about a little bit at a time rather than having a house that is a perpetual disaster which you can't let people see. Well that is the theory. In practice we drink a lot of coffee and talk alot WinkGrin

I'm back too, fresh start tomorrow!

Happy new year everyone Smile

florentina1 · 31/12/2014 21:52

Thank you BitchytakesOnManagement for enlightening me. Can I still play? I pay some one to do my housework and I don't like coffee. If I sit quietly drinking wine and snorting will that be ok?

Oops that is snorting as in making pig noises when I laugh.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 31/12/2014 21:55

Lol, you might get a little bored and there are plenty of tea drinkers or wine by the end of the nights as we do keep a well stocked naughty bar I am sure there will be some little bits that make life easier. welcome aboard Florentina

Makingchanges · 31/12/2014 22:15

I would love to rejoin you. Was on here for a few years a while ago but fell of the wagon spectacularly. Remember quite a few of you. Back to school on Monday and need to do some work to fins my house before then.

Shannaratiger · 31/12/2014 22:22

Happy New Year everyone Wine

Well done bitchy for taking January's reigns, I think it's going to be a good one.

Looking forward to baby news.

Tomorrow's To do list;

Take down christmas tree so can get into the downstairs, only cupboard.

Will be back FLYing properly and Weight Watching so I can lose the 1st + that I have put on since the wedding (only 2 months ago) Xmas Blush and have a tidy house so no panic tidying when my mother decides to visit!!! Wink

I'm afraid I'm off to bed, Dp starting work at 5:15 so early cup of tea required.

Back in 2015!!

KnackeredMerrily · 31/12/2014 22:27

Just stumbled across this thread, i have just got a new baby and a new house in the past couple of months - seems like an opportune time to hop on board a thread like this! Our old house was a disaster and needed 4 hours to make it suitable for guests, and 45 mins of mad dashing to make it suitable for someone who was just calling in to drop something off Blush

We are keeping on top of this home quite well, but it is the habit and routine i need to work on. My standards are much higher than my housework ethic!!

elliepac · 31/12/2014 22:38

I remember you makingchanges welcome backSmile. And helllloooooo to nicknacks and welcome to all newbiesSmile.

pushmepullyou · 31/12/2014 23:03

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 31/12/2014 23:23

Happy New Year to you all Grin

Right as it is now officially January 2015 Here are your links. Although I suspect that a few might be nursing sore heads and be rather over tired. Thankfully we are taking it easy today.

The first babystep is to shine your sink, but you have to shine it the fly lady way don't worry not all the babysteps are hidden in a mile of twee Hmm

Thursday is errand day

For those who are feeling in need of a mission missions here is the link I suspect a magic eraser is a must for this one...

As far as I can gather we are in zone 1 15 mins of decluttering in this porch/hall/dinning is an aim. Go on set your timer, you know you want if you can find the timer Wink

the launch pad is here

I could hunt out the deep cleaning missions but as this is the first day of a new year I will be mindful and kind. But you might want to make sure you have a calendar to hand, your going to need that soon enough. 2015 be prepared to be organised. mwah ha ha...

Happy New Year I luffs you all

No resolutions until February, but I will try for an earlier night tomorrow today?

Sounds like they've just kicked out at the local hotel/bar so may actually get some sleep.
