Huge thanks to SC (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout October (and to SC for such a copy and paste-able OP) Thanks Thanks Thanks Wine Cake

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Caught up on thread now (was about to start work earlier) goth sorry you're facing these worries with DD. We have found ourselves in a similar situation, last night DD wouldn't sleep as she was panicking about going to school :( going to talk to the teacher after school tomorrow.

In a lot of pain after work today. Not going to manage anything now but DH did two more loads of laundry before I got home.

fuzzpig · 03/11/2014 20:48

Haha goth I had a panic then that I was missing some list of rules for nano, then I noticed the photo - love that list :o

Swanhildapirouetting · 03/11/2014 22:13

done
goodish day..felt soo soo tired though (tried to have a nap at 3pm on the tv room sofa -this is a good place to sleep as it means ds2 cannot nip in and turn on the telly when my back is turned Smile

Home edding - typing for 5 mins (less ds get resistant Wink
craft (cutting out a loudness meter with a yellow arrow so that ds2 has a visual prompt to stop shouting all the time at mealtimes WinkWink
literacy
dh took him to Morrisons to buy some groceries (exercise)
singing lesson - taught him to sing Early One Morning at the piano

afternoon a bit of a blur but ds1 in a completely emotional state this evening swearing and shouting because he didn't like the way the chicken was cooked Shock[hates cream sauces] and thought dd was being mean to him (okay she told him he smelt Blush
dd and ds2 decided to get on extremely well, and were telling funny jokes to each; indeed we were all rolling around laughing (once ds1 had gone to another room and calmed down) A rare evening of family harmony in one way..very odd. dd said family jokes were much funnier than the jokes she had with her friends which was sweet of her Smile

I have washed up, cooked twice (had to recook chicken plainly for ds1)
done another jigsaw with ds2 who enjoyed this one better (a castle instead of a mad scientist)
done some washing
put rubbish out
wiped down the worktops
read a book on Wittgenstein family [odd lot]
listened to some vinyl

ds2 refused to go to Scouts. He said they were too badly behaved.

Goth my line was that anything that was affecting my child's academic performance and attendance (ie: being unhappy) was worth mentioning to the teacher. It would certainly not be PFB. Love the cowls. Very Downton, if I may say!

BlueEyeshadow · 03/11/2014 22:45

Evening. Have failed spectacularly about not being on the computer after 10 and it's only the second day. Sigh.

Blog/FB looks lovely, Goth. Sorry to hear about DD, and glad the teacher was helpful.

Sorry to hear about your horrid Monday too, SC.

Glad you've had a goodish day, swan

Really need to kick myself off here, so big waves to everyone else. Night all!

Babystep 4 is the Hmm one about sticking post-it notes on your mirrors. And aargh! she still wants us to email her... Confused

Mission is to wipe kitchen cabinet doors

OP posts:
TerryDolittle · 03/11/2014 23:15

Thanks for the links Blue . I really can't be doing with sticking post it notes around the place (partly due to the fact the family would think I'd gone bonkers. Grin ) so I'm going to jump straight in and organise a folder/ control journal.

elliepac · 04/11/2014 06:15

Morning all. Crazy busy day yesterday. Back to school and therefore work and then the Scouts/Beavers runs in the evening.

Also having major problems with DD at bedtime as she keeps saying she is scared and will not go to sleep on her own. Have tried lights on, torch, teddies, lullaby music and she is not having any of it. I ended up going to bed with her at half eight last night. And ideas oh wise women?

Today is another long day. Full teaching day plus meeting after school. Little flying being done.

Sorry so many people has crappy Mondays. Fingers crossed your Tuesdays are betterSmile.

inadaydream · 04/11/2014 09:30

Omg I can't believe how busy this thread is - I can't keep up!! You are all busy bees Smile

Did pick up on hot flushes! I can sympathise there! I am only 35, so not menopausal, but I am on anti depressants and the side effects for me appears to be hot flushes, sweats and being prone to bruising easily. The difference in my mood and motivation levels though make these side effects (for the short term) so worth it. I can't believe the difference one little tablet a day has made to me.

Yesterday I started with a shiny sink again (it seems to have more of a positive effect on me if I shine after washing breakfast pots). One load of washing on, one out to dry, tidied as I went (which is a habit I have never learnt but would love to master), did a double exercise class. This for me was a very productive day!!

Onwards and upwards for November x

fuzzpig · 04/11/2014 10:14

Happy anniversary for yesterday dizzy! :) What a lovely way to celebrate.

ta da
Got dressed immediately again.
Spoke to DS' teacher (he was upset at school too)
Hung out bedding wash from last night
Chucked some pillowcases that are tatty/stained despite washing
Put another bedding wash on (we found absolutely loads when we cleared our room, all musty - going to go through it all to ditch more)

to do
More laundry in particular uniform so DH can iron it tonight
Talk to DD's teacher
Play a game with DCs as promised

Power of three today - really shocked how much pain I'm in just from work yesterday. It was only a slightly more arduous shift than average but it's had a huge effect :(

GoingGoingGoth · 04/11/2014 10:28

Belated Happy Anniversary Dizzy

Daydream the plus of Flylady is that you can adapt it to how it works for you. We won't judge. The trick to tidying (for me) is to never go into another room empty handed.

Am trying to psych myself up to go to the croft to harvest salad. But it's a bit grey and damp.

Done
Beds
Windows
Packed lunch
S&S
Dd to school (she's cheerful this morning)
Washed wall behind kitchen bin

To do
Croft
Deliver salad
Dry laundry away
Rubbish/recycling out
Bank
Lastest batch cowls to shop
Collect some more jam jar lanterns for bonfire tomorrow night
Collect DD
Supervise homework
Dinner
Wash up & SS

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 04/11/2014 13:47

Really struggling with stress today, so not getting much of anything done.

Hopefully be back on form and getting things done tomorrow or the next day.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 04/11/2014 14:07

The doc was not joking when he said i would fell rough today. fell asleep about 8pm last night, only just managed to get ds to school with lunch, slept through til half 1 and am now ready to go back to sleep. Feeling decidedly shaky and dizzy. Meds have got three days before I decide they are NOT and option and tell the doc this.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 04/11/2014 14:07

Oh and there has been/will be no flying.

fuzzpig · 04/11/2014 18:06

Not even managing my tiny list today :( feeling crap

GoingGoingGoth · 04/11/2014 18:47

Bitchy hope tonight/tomorrow is better.

Dd said her teacher did a circle time on bullying and that it is better to tell a friend to not bully than just to go along with it. She seems more positive today, especially as she volunteered to do her times tables. Could be because there's a field trip to see Malificent next week!

coffeeandcream · 04/11/2014 20:16

Evening everyone,

Bitchy, Alice and Fuzzpig, sorry you are feeling so unwell today Brew

Swanhildapirouetting · 04/11/2014 20:31

fuzzpig sorry you are in pain after work

today
drove dd to school and it took an Hour and half to do the round trip!
literacy
handwriting
walk to park
tidied up for visitors, including wiping down the Utility
had visitors(three children) who all Played very Nicely with ds2 Subbuteo

cooked vegetable curry
cooked fish cakes
ate them!

ds1 washed his uniform
dd did her homework

stripped bed
emptied bin
loaded dw
veg peelings in compost
grocery shopped for veg/sundries from Turkish corner shop

very tired now, the anxiety created by anticipating visitors has ridiculous aftereffects Shock I always feel as if it has been some incredible feat to organise any playdate for ds2 - silly though it may sound..He was a bit loud but otherwise fine.

BlueEyeshadow · 04/11/2014 22:06

Evening all…

Lots of chatter again today – what’s everyone been up to?

Terry wisely declined to stick post-it notes everywhere.
Three was flying high
Dizzy has been celebrating her wedding anniversary – sounds lovely
ellie has been crazy busy. Sorry to hear about DD, though no particular advice I’m afraid.
inadaydream had a productive day and has a shiny sink
fuzzpig - sorry to hear you’re in pain. Hope it’s eased.
Goth was trying to psych herself up to go to the croft. Did you make it?
Alice was struggling.
Bitchy was also struggling. Hope the meds start to take positive effect soon.
swan has also had a productive day and was feeling tired.

Sorry to see so many people having a tough day – Brew Wine Cake available as required.
Big waves to coffee, SC, nicknacks and everyone else who’s around.

Today has mostly been working and baking. Used up 2 pints of sour milk and the freezer is now filled with scones…

Linkies…
Babystep 5 is combatting negative voices. Despite the Fat Fairy’s twee prose, it’s not as daft as it sounds. But ye gods, she STILL wants email!!

Wednesday is Anti-Procrastination Day – the day to do the jobs you keep putting off.

Mission is cleaning out the fridge.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/11/2014 22:20

Evening all,

Sorry to hear that so many Fledglings are feeling rough or under stress, hope that tomorrow brings an improvement.

Goth - had a quick look at your FB page (didn't "like" it as DH was logged in not me, but will go back and do so). You are a talented lady!

Ellie - my DCs decided to move into a room together due to temporary scaredness at night three years ago (when they were 5 and 7) and are still very happily sharing a room, might that be a possibility? They do talk about moving out sometimes and we are planning to do so next year but it has really helped them both.

Dizzy - that's lovely re. anniversary.

Feeling a little sad tonight, the cat I was looking after for a friend last week has sadly died tonight, he was very poorly so not altogether unexpected but still sad. Another friend has lost her cat today in a road accident. Giving my two big cuddles tonight.

Ta-da!

School run / morning routine
Washing on line (it was so lovely this morning, not so this afternoon, it's soaked and staying out).
Steam cleaned bathroom including ceiling
Bleached grouting
Cleaned my bedroom window frame and sill
Hoovered
A few hotspots
30 mins OU work
Pilates class
Town for Christmas and other shopping
Get diesel
Hide Christmas shopping (our lift up divan bed is brilliant for this)
Get DCs from school
Ballet / tap for DD
Home for dinner - no more Cubs! Tuesdays have been a real rush for the past 2.5 years, DS will be a Scout as of Thursday, which makes life a bit easier.
DCs chores - emptying recycling, mopping kitchen floor (DD), restocking loo rolls in bathroom, hoovering stairs (DS)
Play card games with DCs
ANother 30 mins OU work
Time for my shower and bed.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/11/2014 22:24

Oh and feeling twitchy. Tomorrow is the day when I should find out whether DS gets his statement. Have managed not to think about it too much today but was very pre-occupied with it yesterday. Suspect I will be struggling to concentrate at work tomorrow (especially as I have a load of really boring paperwork to do). Expect random posts at frequent intervals as I attempt to distract myself form my inbox. I also suspect I will end up chasing them for it on Thursday.

fuzzpig · 04/11/2014 22:29

Thanks for the links blue!

I like the idea of battling the negative voices. God knows I sure need to do that right now! Felt so rubbish today. I used to quite enjoy Tuesdays but ATM they seem to be spent trying to recover from Mondays Hmm

Thanks for all the kind words, and I'm sorry others are feeling rough too.

Bitchy yikes that is epic sideeffectness, hope it eases ASAP so you can feel the positive effects of the medicine instead.

Swan I TOTALLY get you about the playdate anxiety and the after effects. It's funny (ha Hmm) how the anxiety doesn't altogether shift once the event has passed - you'd think it would, wouldn't you? But no, I get the Anxiety Hangover too (not called it that before but I think the term sounds right!) and my eldest is the same.

Goth we do spellings and maths on the walk to school! DD really struggles with maths but she enjoys the little challenges I give her - I think it's really boosting her confidence. Although I have to be careful not to push her too far as if there's something she doesn't understand I don't have time to stop and explain/demonstrate with real items etc.

fuzzpig · 04/11/2014 22:31

Ohhh good luck who - thinking of you and hope you get the result you need!

Stewedcoot · 04/11/2014 23:36

Evening [well, it's morning here]

Just emerged from my duvet nest.

Negative stuff: Have the flu. (But quite relieved fatigure, high temp and spinning sensation due to virus and not hormones!)

Positive stuff: I watched a Cagney and Lacey re-run today! Grin

Good luck tomorrow Whoknows. Have all fingers and toes crossed for you. Hope you get the answer you are looking for and the support you need. And congrats on your humungous 'ta da' list!

No Flying done. Or anything at all really. Except a lot of sleeping. Feeling slightly better tonight.

Sorry to hear Bitchy Fuzzpig and Alice that you are all under the weather too.

Ditto Swan/Fuzzpig to post socialising Anxiety Hangover (good name for it).

Goth think you are very talented in the craft dept. Not on Facebook [old luddite emoticon] but liked looking at the pics!! Arf at writing 'rules'!

A belated 'Happy Anniversary' to Dizzy! Thanks

Good luck with the house move this weekend Castle in case I forget to say it later!

Glad ADS helping inadaydream

Ellie DD uses the CD 'Bedtime Meditations for Kids (Calm Kids) by Christiane Kerr' and finds it very helpful. It really works for her anyway! (And she finds turning off at night v. difficult indeed. She also went through a state of fairly severe anxiety aged 8/9 yrs. But this CD really helped then and she still uses it now aged 11 yrs on 'difficult' nights.) At least I'm fairly certain that is the one. She's asleep now of course and I daren't go and check in case I wake her up, but will verify tomorrow.

That's me done. Back off to me basket now ...

G'night all! Waves to CoffeeandCream Threeislovely Toffee Terry Chottie and everyone I've missed!

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 07:01

Ooh thanks for the recommendation stewed I'll look up that audio. DD is mega anxious too, she's got such dark circles under her eyes from not sleeping :( I'm hoping to stick some story CDs on the iPad for her but they're so expensive - I'll start by borrowing some obviously.
