Huge thanks to SC (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout October (and to SC for such a copy and paste-able OP) Thanks Thanks Thanks Wine Cake

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Ellie/Fuzzpig have just checked and it is the CD I mention down post by Christiane Kerr. She is a yoga teacher/Montessori teacher so knows what she is about imo. Hope your dc find it helpful!

Eurgh. Early start this morning. Still not feeling v. well but better than yesterday. Not helped by pre-teen posturing. If I had spoken to my parents the way dd speaks to us sometimes, I would have been sent to work down the mines ... .

Good luck again today Whoknows thinking of you!

Must dash!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/11/2014 08:30

re Bedtimes, we don't use that CD, but my DCs to always go to bed with either music or an audio book on in their room. Also we have a dimmer switch in their room so they can have a bit of low light.

IAmAShitHotLawyer · 05/11/2014 08:37

Morning all, am gonna try and join this thread and keep up. Its really hard when you work full time. Am also a single parent to 3 very slobby teens so that makes it even harder.

Anyway will read all of the thread later on, am just off to do 15mins declutter to make me feel good before I start.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 05/11/2014 09:26

Feel like shit with the meds and have just spoken to the Doc about it. Angry It is looking like i can't tolerate the drug but have to endure some more days of a half dose just to check. Flying is unlikely to occur and I am in a veeeeeeeeeery grumpy mood.

Swanhildapirouetting · 05/11/2014 09:50

whoknows very very good vibes for the statement. And if you do not get it, for the next steps.

done
drove ds1 to school so he could sleep a bit later (until 7.30) as he is perpetually overtired and grumpy as a result

now I have to do (ds2 just found the computer in its hiding place so had to wrestle the mouse away from him so that he would get dressed)

home ed - literacy, RE

tidy downstairs again and hoover (didn't actually hoover yesterday) as my DSis is coming over from Dublin today and is visiting in the afternoon, on her way somewhere else

We (ds2 and I)are going to Brighton tomorrow to meet up with my cousin (I think) so conserving my strength and any battles for that!

Had a lovely talk with a new Home edding acquaintance yesterday (she had lots of children) although due to her many children she was obviously in a different zone from me Grin - it reminded me that dealing with one child can be harder than dealing with several, just from the point of view of critical mass.

SC I am sorry you have flu, last week must have taken it out of you without you realising it. Dd is terribly rude too, the boys not so. I like to think it is frustrated intelligence expressing itself as belligerence. Yesterday she was delightful again. She also announced she wanted to join Dance Club at school - I tried to show very little excitement for fear she would revert back to Nah I'm Too Cool To Dance. (this has already happened with Choir and piano)

Swanhildapirouetting · 05/11/2014 09:52

Bitchy also sorry you are feeling so rough. At least you can pinpoint that it is the meds that are really not right Sad

I must go and find out what ds2 is up to now. I fear he is in a rather unreliable mood.

inadaydream · 05/11/2014 10:41

Thanks to all those feeling a bit 'meh' today. Having another one too after another bad nights sleep. Dd had a bad dream again and the smoke detector in the kitchen kept 'bipping' at random times in the night due to a low battery - DH had to take it down in the end as we could find spare battery and it kept waking me up. There is only DS getting a full nights sleep here at the moment as thankfully he sleeps through his sisters noise in the night!

Ta da
Ran Hoover around living room as carpet was covered in bits and it was getting on my nerves
Load of washing in

To do
Find spare battery for smoke alarm
Shine sink
Exercise class
Swap washing around on airer (dry off and wet hung up)
Enjoy bonfire tea and fireworks Grin

Watched OCD cleaners last night. Does anyone else watch this in awe of the OCD people? I am strangely jealous of the obsession they have in keeping their houses pristine and like show homes. Am I wierd?! The dirty houses alway leave me thinking I need to get my ass in gear as I don't want to end up like that in 10 years time!

I also find it fascinating that both the yucky ones and the OCD ones all seem to have suffered something awful in their lives which has triggered their behaviours - although they have triggered them to behave in completely opposite ways.

Always gives me good for thought xx

inadaydream · 05/11/2014 10:41

Could should obviously say couldn't (must read through before posting).

inadaydream · 05/11/2014 10:44

Ah and good should read food! Off to find that vat of coffee as I obviously need it (is it nearly bed time yet?).

TerryDolittle · 05/11/2014 11:11

Hello everyone Smile
I'm making sure I shine sink, get dressed, I'm also having a quick declutter and ''rehoming'', also the hotspot (my dining table) of things each morning. It's a slight jump ahead of the flylady plan, and I know you're not supposed to rush it but I'm happy doing it and I don't feel like I'm rushing it.
inadaydream Yes! I love watching the OCD Cleaner programme and I also watch those tidy, clean people in awe. Grin The clean people motivate me to keep my own home clean (they make it look so easy) and the messy people make me breathe a sigh of relief that my home isn't that bad. To be fair it's only because I'm not a hoarder so I'm good at chucking things away. Otherwise I dread to think!

TerryDolittle · 05/11/2014 11:14

*get dressed to shoes slippers that should say. Not just get dressed. Of course I get dressed each day usually! Grin

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 05/11/2014 12:04

Meh can't beat a good PJ day!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 05/11/2014 13:28

New med is a no go. No longer taking it but will have the joys Hmm of it in my system for a while. Not something I am pleased about but glad to be off the fucking horrible horrible stuff!

ToffeeWhirl · 05/11/2014 13:42

Sorry the meds made you feel so ill, Bitchy Sad. I hope the dr can find an alternative.

ta da

Took DS2 cycling - happy boy
B/fast for DS1
Crisis clean before teacher turned up
DS1's lesson with LEA teacher - he really enjoyed it Smile
Lunch
Email exchange with specialist school

DS2 is being very grumpy and unco-operative now. We still haven't started our lessons - that's going to be fun then. Have Maths, English and History (the Romans) lined up. Then he has a surprise new 'Wimpy Kid' book for me to give to him, which will hopefully put a smile on his face. No idea why he's being such a grump - it seemed to be triggered by a problem with Lego.

Haven't had time to catch up with the thread, but hope everyone is ok. Will try and read more later.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 05/11/2014 13:43

Fuck an alternative. will take the insomnia! and the side effects of the old stuff.

ToffeeWhirl · 05/11/2014 14:20

Don't blame you, Bitchy. The side effects of these meds must have put you right off.

Still finding it hard to motivate DS2 today. It feels like wading through mud.

Oh, Swan, have just noticed that you are in Brighton today, just down the road from us. You could have popped in for tea on your way home Smile. Next time, maybe?

WhoKnows - crossing my fingers that you receive good news today. The statement process seemed to grind to a standstill here and it turns out both LEA and specialist school were waiting for the other to do something. You do have to keep chivvying them along, I find.

ToffeeWhirl · 05/11/2014 14:49

Phew. DH has just offered to take DS2 out for a walk. We have managed to get some Maths done and revised our lesson on the Romans, but I think I'll call it quits for today.

Might allow myself a short nap...Wink

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 16:38

Welcome Lawyer! Hope your 15 mins went well :o

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 16:48

I OTOH have done nothing.

School run was hell on earth this morning - DS in a complete state, kicking and screaming. Had to half carry, half drag him. Not good for me physically either :(

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 17:15

So I see some flyers are near my neck of the woods (Crawley) flying meetup one day maybe? But who would dare host with all our messy houses :o

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/11/2014 17:25

Well, i phoned the LA in the end. They said they would send out a draft statement or EHC plan by the 19th. I said so does that mean they are definitely issuing one then and the person said "computer doesn't say" but she did say well, we do a few notes in lieu but not many. So, no further on really. I will be phoning again on the 19th, in the meantime going to try and not dwell on it.

Fuzzpig - I'm Hants/Surrey borders, about an hour's drive from Crawley (not been there for years). There are one or two others that aren't too far away (you know who you are).

Got to go, DD to Brownies and DS to trampolining next.

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 17:33

about an hour's drive from Crawley (not been there for years)

You've not missed much TBH :o

fuzzpig · 05/11/2014 17:34

And AAAARGH on your behalf re: statement! Wasn't really worth them giving you today as a date was it? Grr. Thanks

ToffeeWhirl · 05/11/2014 18:23

Sorry, WhoKnows. It sounds horribly familiar. DS1's Statement was meant to be finalised in September. When I chased them up about it after half term, it turned out nobody was doing anything: the school was waiting for the LEA to do something and the LEA was waiting for the school to do something. They have kicked into action since I got in touch though. You just have to keep on at them.

Didn't manage a nap in the end, but allowed myself to have a restful afternoon, for once. DS2 received a copy of the latest 'Wimpy Kid' book so he was immersed in that after his walk with DH, which gave me even longer 'off duty' Grin.

Swanhildapirouetting · 05/11/2014 19:03

done
exercise
saw Sister
lots of driving
completed puzzle with ds2
made double batch of tomato sauce with vegetables in it

knackered again now and we were greeted by a phone call from HOY concerning ds1 name calling again..He blames everyone else but is clearly implicated somehow Sad Meeting set up for Monday.

Ds2 in bouncy mood but I am wondering why I make these elaborate plans to go on train trips. Off tomorrow. (Toffee - sorry I should have made a plan but as meeting involves toddler I am not sure how timings will pan out)

No Beavers tonight, I am too worn out by all these crises GrinHmm guests, trips, phonecalls
