Should you offer to show visitors around your home?

Hi all

Just that really? I do for close f&f but what about e.g. newish school mum friends? I love seeing round peoples homes but don't know what the etiquette is re asking 'would you like a tour. Fwiw, I love my home & happy to show but it's usually messy in a few parts & I I think I have lower standards than most!

I think it depends whether you are going to talk about your house with your guest.

Its perfectly normal to show people your house if you have just moved in, had some work done or if you have a shared interest in houses/interior design. It would be odd to show your house to every person that crossed your threshold.

Similar rules apply to your garden, car and stamp collection. Some people are interested, some people aren't.

I don't think I ever thought about it in terms of etiquette before. There have been peoples who've asked or obviously sought invite that I've known for a short time, although intimately I suppose as they've all been baby new mother friends so for a short period they were a lot closer to me than my other life long friends-haven't had much in the way of friends in between I suppose & most of the folk I know seem to be interested in houses & decor. I love all the houses programmes etc. also, tbh, it seems like when you get to the stage of being invited to someone's home here, then you're in the circle of trust almost! Of the people who have & haven't offered, I've thought no more or less of them either way, just assumed they wanted to show off their decor if they offered & always love looking at spaces.
