Anyone got an ikea expedit for shoe storage?

I desperately need shoe storage to tidy up my hall. We have a shoe rack but it looks cluttered and untidy and not everything fits on so is all over floor.
I am thinking of getting one of those ikea expedit shelving units as it would fit well and could hide shoes in the baskets. Does anyone have one of these for shoes and does it work well? Not sure what size to go for. I'm thinking just the 4 basket one as the 8 looks a bit huge. Would the 4 be big enough storage do you think?

I have the 4 expedit for shoes at the bottom of the stairs. It's fab. You can fit probably 4 pairs of adult shoes neatly or an untold amount rammed in.

You can so hide other crap in it when unexpected visitors arrive. Win win.

OhNoYouExpedidnt · 06/04/2014 09:09

ALSO hide. I am not an American teenage girl.

Jemster · 06/04/2014 09:14

Thank you. Do you use the baskets or just put the shoes straight on the shelves? Between the 4 of us we have a fair amount of shoes. Love the idea of hiding crap, I have lots of it!

We have a white expedit with black canvas £2.50 baskets. They seem to do the job.

desertgirl · 06/04/2014 10:16

I have an 8 expedit with cupboards and drawers underneath (cupboards for my smarter shoes, drawers for kids' shoes) and baskets for crocs etc - and for swimming stuff, bike helmets, and other such junk) - works nicely.

PartyConfused · 06/04/2014 10:20

I only bought one 2 weeks ago and it has solved our pit under the stairs.
We have a 4 hole one with the canvas baskets (£2.50). We have a basket each and we now no longer have to hunt through hundreds of shoes to find a pair.
I am probably a bit to excited about it! But we have tried all sorts of 'solutions' and tgis has been the best and cheapeat by far.

ALSO hide. I am not an American teenage girl.

That's tickled me more than it should have!

I would get the 8 and lay it down if space. 4 bottom ones add doors for shoes. One each person. Then 4 baskets in top row. One per person each for
Hats/ umbrellas/ gloves/ swim stuff/ school bags etc

Indith · 06/04/2014 14:42

ikea do great shoe tidy cupboard type things have you seen them? My childminder has one and you can fit loads of shoes in. I'd go for that over expedit. As soon as I can get rid of the buggy taking up space in our hall I'm getting one. At the moment we have a rail across and a couple of sets of those wardrobe tidy hanging canvas shelf things. One is the bigger shelves with bike helmets, change bag, my slings and a shelf each for the dcs school bags and the other is a shoe tidy. works well.

Viviennemary · 06/04/2014 16:35

I've got an expedit unit and I love it. But I don't think I'd like it that much for storing shoes in.

LilllyLovesLife · 06/04/2014 17:41

Indith We had one of those and it lasted less than 6 months. No where near enough shoe storage and couldn't handle the kids opening and closing it - wasn't robust enough.

We got rid of it and then got an IKEA Malm chest of drawers and now have a draw each for shoes and then the top ones for sunglasses, suncream, tissues etc. Works really well and has massively helped tidy our hall.

We bought an expedit unit at the same time for the living room and when we got home and put everything together, we did wonder why we didn't think of an expedit for the hallway! Would of been better for the space we have although I do like the Malm drawers.

LilllyLovesLife · 06/04/2014 17:43

This is the one we have

Jemster · 08/04/2014 17:37

Thanks for all the replies. Still not sure which to go for. I think we could definitely fill the space of an 8 unit but I'm wondering if it would look a bit large in our small hallway. It would fit perfectly upright but not on its side. Do you think an 8 would look odd in a small hall even though it will fit? I am desperate to tidy this area up as it's just such a mess.

we have an 8 and have some plastic boxes (for scarves, hats, gloves etc) and some baskets for shoes
and hiding crap
it is brilliant - I would recommend them for anything

Jemster · 08/04/2014 17:54

Tommy, is yours in your hall? Do you just chuck shoes on top of each other then in the boxes? This doesn't bother me but not so sure about dh's precious shoes!

OP posts:
Tommy · 08/04/2014 18:08

yes we do - just chuck 'em all in
DH doesn't put his shoes in there anyway but none of us have "precious" shoes - any decent ones I have are upstairs in my wardrobe.
I have 3 DSs though who just have school shoes and trainers and don't care about them at all.....

Tommy · 08/04/2014 18:10

at first I was a bit worried that it was too big - our hall is longish but quite narrow but, to be honest, it looks so much better than before from hiding the crap point of view that I'm willing to put up with it

LilllyLovesLife · 08/04/2014 19:23

I think having something that looks a bit big is still better than having visible clutter. I personally would go for the 8 if space will allow.

Jemster · 08/04/2014 19:43

Thank you all. One last question, my hall is painted boring cream magnolia so which colour expedit would look best, white or the beigey birch colour?

OP posts:
Artandco · 08/04/2014 19:46

I would say white as keeps it looking uncluttered and fresher looking

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 08/04/2014 19:48

Measure the width of your hall and then you'll have a better idea of how it will fit. I loved the idea of the Expedit in my hall but when I checked measurements it made the hall too narrow where I wanted to use it. I now have one of the narrow shoe tidy cupboards for everyday shoes and everyone has their own plastic storage box of shoes in their wardrobes except for mine, which take up far too much room in thecupboard under the stairs Grin

LilllyLovesLife · 08/04/2014 19:55

another vote for white here. It will make it less of a problem being big than if you had anything darker. We went for white for most of our furniture that we have bought since moving here.

rollonthesummer · 08/04/2014 21:59

We have the 2x2 one in the porch for shoes. DH and the children have a box each. My shoes are upstairs.

UterusUterusGhali · 09/04/2014 11:08

Yeah white with baskets if you can afford it.

I want more expedit! I'm jealous of your having space in the hall. They would devour shoes & school bags & helmets. Envy

I have wine crates in my cloakroom, but they're too shallow for mine & dds shoes.
