Beds - King or SuperKing? Also matress

averyyoungkitten · 31/03/2014 06:33

Hi,
Maybe an odd topic for housekeeping but we need a new bed. After nearly 20 years the old one has had it. Beds seem to have changed since we got the old divan.

I fancy a bigger bed. The room will take a kingsize easily, a super may be tighter with less room around it. But is there any advantage in having one over the other from peoples experience? Is it harder to get bedding or harder to move and clean etc.?

Further, can someone recommend a good matress?
Thanks.

Superking! It is harder to find bedding but TBH-once you have bedding how often are you shopping for more? I have no trouble with the size of it in my washing machine either. The only issue I have is I'm not quite sure what to do with pillows-a pair of pillows just look lost on a superking bed! If anyone has any bright ideas.....

motleymop · 06/04/2014 22:24

freckle - get yourself superking pillows!! white company definitely have them, as do john lewis.

stackablegoatbearingcheesecake · 07/04/2014 10:28

Superking bed, duvet and 3' wide pillows.
It really irritates me how duvet cover 'sets' still only include 2 normal size pillowcases. Watch out for that.

I have a king as well from Ikea. You gotta check the frame and see if this add weight to your ceiling. I saw some cracks on mine. Urm...
Beddings are a bit more expensive, especially if you want nice ones. I can just about flip a King mattress on my own. I don't think I can flip the superking one. :D A King and S.King is means that you really got to have a decent frame to hold it. Or else you may break it. ;) I only manage the soft mattress option and not the hard mattress option from Ikea. I fear I may come through the ceiling!

Super King - I love it.

But when we go away and have to sleep in a double bed it is bloody impossible.

Pusspuss1 · 10/04/2014 16:47

Definitely go superking if you have space! We got a king and I really regret not going up a size.

mateysmum · 10/04/2014 16:53

We have a super king and all that space is a real luxury. Haven't found any issues with getting bedding. We just bought a new mattress. It is a Harrison's mattress and was not cheap, but soooo comfortable and should last years.

It is heavy to turn and be sure that you can get it up your stairs! When I was looking at mattresses all the retailers were really keen to check you could get it into the bedroom.

morethanpotatoprints · 10/04/2014 16:56

There is a bigger one than super king, I think its emperor. We are looking at one of these next, but worried about finding bedding.
Anybody got one of these?

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/04/2014 16:56

Emperor!

I want one of those now.....

lucy101 · 10/04/2014 16:57

We bought King and wished we had bought Super King! I second Vi-Spring too (for the mattress and buy a cheaper base).

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/04/2014 16:58

No wait - The biggest is a Caesar. A whopping 96" x 87"

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 10/04/2014 17:03

Had a King size and used a Super king duvet so we had lots of cover each.
Now have a super king and love it. Yes sheets are expensive but worth it imo.
If I hadn't spent a fortune on a SK duvet, I would do what DameDiazepam does - you genius! I had always wanted two single duvets, but couldn't think how to make it look good. Under a bedspread - duh!

We bought a new king size bed when moving into our new house from our flat. We had a good comfy king size that we were planning on using as our bed and wanted another king size for a spare bed.

We were able to get a good price on a good kingsize and it had nice fake suede fabric around it rather than grim mattress fabric (my pet hate). Which meant that we ended up using it in our bedroom as we didn't need to have a valence on it, other one is in the spare room.

We'd originally chosen the king size thinking it was going to be the spare bed and it was going to have all our old bedroom duvet covers, curtains etc as it was the same colour as our old bedroom - and a great excuse to get new stuff for our new bedroom. So, so regret not getting a superking - the extra few inches would have been really nice!

Exit

We have a very big bedroom and lots of space but after measuring not sure we could fit a Caesar in, but wow, this would be great.

SecretSquirrel13 · 10/04/2014 19:21

Lucy101 I agree the mattress is more important then the frame I would recommend vi spring to anyone even the entry level mattresses are far superior to the alternatives due to construction methods and filling etc
I think white company does emperor size bed linen and duvets.

HappyAsEyeAm · 12/04/2014 07:53

We have had a king size bed since we moved in together 12 years ago. I now feel that a superking would be amazing. DH and I don't cuddle to go to sleep or touch when we sleep, so we use all of the space, and it would be great to have just a little bit more. We wont get one though, as our bed is in decent nick, I would need to get a new headboard, new duvet and all bedding, which I cant justify.

But in your position, I would definitely get a superking.

HappyAsEyeAm · 12/04/2014 07:53

You can also get superking bedding in tkmaxx.

crashbangboom · 12/04/2014 09:34

We got a super king 9 months ago. Previously had a double. Its changed our lives. Seriously. Sleeps improved. We all cuddle up in it. Fab.

WaitroseEssentialPancetta · 23/09/2015 09:45

Sorry to open an old thread but I've just ordered a Superking bed frame and wondering about mattresses. I wake really easily and DH works lates so was thinking about a zip and link. Which? don't have any recommendations though. Do you think 2 singles would be ok instead? With a Superking sheet and a mattress topper? Or would we end up with a gap?

WaitroseEssentialPancetta · 23/09/2015 18:57

Bump for evening bed experts

Onthepigsback · 25/09/2015 00:12

Oh God, Superking, without question. Its just fantastic, so nice to sleep like a starfish but still with your dh beside you. The kids can all fit too when necessary (but we don't encourage it!). Why you would choose to sleep on a smaller surface if you didn't have to I have no idea!
