Beds - King or SuperKing? Also matress

Hi,
Maybe an odd topic for housekeeping but we need a new bed. After nearly 20 years the old one has had it. Beds seem to have changed since we got the old divan.

I fancy a bigger bed. The room will take a kingsize easily, a super may be tighter with less room around it. But is there any advantage in having one over the other from peoples experience? Is it harder to get bedding or harder to move and clean etc.?

Further, can someone recommend a good matress?

Only advantage of king size bed is that you get more space.

Disadvantages are that bedding can be difficult to find and is expensive.

But I wouldn't switch back to a double under any circumstances (only if we move and new house won't fit king bed...).

Matress wise, memory foam. At least 10cms.

We have a king (which is great) and are considering a super-king when we move. However, I think it would be a pain to not be able to pick up bedding in the supermarkets.

I haven't looked into how much more expensive super-king bedding is. If it is expensive that will probably swing it.

if I had the space I'd have a Super King, no question. The sheets are massive though so I guess you'd need a washing machine with a reasonable size drum and be prepared to have fun folding them. If a Super is going to overwhelm your bedroom though maybe better to stick to just a king? A king will still be better than a standard double.

a super king is so lovely- basically the size of 2 single beds side by side- you really get your own space away from your OH.

We have a super King and use 2 single duvets plus a super King bedspread over the top to make it look tidy during the day. Easy to buy bedding and easy to change plus no duvet hogging!

Viceroy bedding on line is where we get our super King sheets from, fantastic quality and very reasonable. They aren't huge, can't see you'd have a problem washing them tbh.

I love our super king. It does take up space, the duvet cover is massive (I take mine to the the laundry for £5 including ironing) and turning the mattress is a palaver.
Worth it though.

We have change from a king to a superking and love the extra space and have this as the mattress

We also bought a feather and down duvet. Getting bedding is not a problem although we need a deep fitted sheet as the mattress is deep. It is a bit annoying when you see pretty duvet covers in the supermarket that only go up to king size however have bought online and had a bargain one from bhs.
Our bed is so comfy it is hard to get up! And worth that bit extra considering how much time you spend in it!!

I have a superking, but regret not just buying a king size. Finding bedding to fit is a pain- I have to buty it online and it costs, while all the big supermarkets stock a big selection of king size bedding.

Super King, but ours is a zip link so is basically two large singles. With a thick mattress cover (John Lewis) you do not notice but the great advantage is that if your OH is restless or gets up to pee, it disturbs you far less.

Best bed we've ever had.

We have a super king with a very expensive pillow topped mattress. The thing weighs a tonne, I could never turn the mattress or move the bed by myself, but I love it. Dp is 6'4 and in my old double we were squashed. In a super king we can both have our own space. I wouldn't go back. get the very best you can afford, you cant put a price on you both having a good nights sleep. Bedding from dunelm or online is cheap enough, and the sheets aren't so huge you have to worry about the washing machine. I washed all of the sheets (including my 9 pillowcases ) in the same wash as dd's single bedding in our standard sized machine yesterday no problem.

Super king here too. It's brilliant, although neither me nor DH are large or long people. Good for the DC to pile in for morning cuddles. No bother washing (I don't iron). The linen is more expensive but how many sets do you honestly need anyway?!

Love our super king. So comfy. Changing bedding no problem, but it is more expensive and harder to find.

My gripe is that we've always had it since married 8 years ago and are thoroughly spoilt. DH is 6'4 and a rugby forward so needs the space. When we go on holiday we hate having to sleep in a double. End up paying extra for a king or sleep really badly. So if I could, I think I'd rather we'd got used to a king!!

I have a superking and I bloody love it.

I get my bedding mostly form TKMAX or Homesense.

I recently got a superking duvet cover and fitted sheet for £25 in the marks and spencer sale.

Look in the sales if you want a bargain.

Princess - We have the same problem as DH is 6'6" (not a rugby forward, though). When we go on holiday we now always ask for a twin room & put up with singles pushed together. The great advantage is that you nearly always get a slightly larger room as well, to accomodate the singles.

We also have a speaking zip and link dh is very light sleeper so they are unzipped and I sleep like a queen! It's not very romantic though but after 20 years of poor sleep it's a god sent. We use super king duvet and cover, and single fitted sheet.

Another superking fan here.
It's so lovey to be able to stretch out in bed without feeling that you're going to hit someone.
The bed came from IKEA and has two single mattresses with a superking mattress topper.

Never had a problem finding bed linen - we get ours from John Lewis.

We have a super king and the main difference is the length. Kingsize are, I think, standard length which is 6ft, whereas our super king is 6ft6. As my OH is 6ft2, this was a big factor in our choice!
Bedding is expensive but pretty easy to find, I usually buy a set or two in the next sale. The mattress is bloody heavy but I can just about manage to turn one on my own.

We went from a double to a superking and while I love the extra space, I wish we had just gone for a king. There is very little choice of bedding compared to kingsize and it takes two washes to do the sheets and duvet cover in my tiny 6kg washing machine. changing the sheets is a workout in itself and there's no way I can turn the mattress on my own.

Thanks to everyone for their views. DH is keen to have the Superking and believes it will fit across the wall with three ft either side for walking space. However, one of the wardrobes will have to go - or be made smaller to do it.

I have a 9 kg drum on the washing machine, soit should take the duvets etc.

We bought a super king when we lived in a house with big bedrooms but have now moved to a house with smaller bedrooms.
There was no way I was getting rid of my beloved bed so now the whole bedroom is pretty much taken up with bed!

Bedding is from tkmaxx-good quality and cheap

Super king definitely especially if you often end up with all the dc in it too.
I buy bed linen from soak and sleep (used to be duvet and pillow warehouse).
Mattress- vi spring plus we have white company mattress topper. I love our bed

Ive had my superking for a week (went from a double) and when lying on them in the showroom a king didn't seem 'bigger' enough. They are huge and once you get the duvet on take up even more room so you will need the space but its heaven being able to get comfy without having to be considerate of DH's space as we each have loads.

Bedding from Dunelm, they had lots in superking size and have a range of prices so something for everyone.

We got a memory foam topped sprung mattress from bensons for beds and were much cheaper than dreams. Only drawback for me is that superking frames are few and far between so we got a divan base with draws. Not as much storage underneath and not as nice looking as a nice frame but now ive slept in it i couldn't care less!

If you have the room, go for it.
