The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Bit of a bump...so much illness on our home lately Sad But on the bright side no vomit at all today and limited poo...so we are on the mend.

But the house has descended into chaos...I had good intentions to get up bright and early and clean but had a broken nights sleep and was totally lazy !

I must break the back of it tomorrow morning and sort out the ironing pile into smaller piles to sort out, before ironing.

With me luck Grin

Don't be too hard on yourself!

Good luck!

Woke up at 6.30am.

Started housework at 7.30am

Cleaned and bleached bathroom.

Hoovered and changed beds in three bedroom and sorted millions of toys on two bedrooms.

Tidied and picked up everything from living room and dining room ready to hoover.

Stacked everything up in kitchen
Cleaned and washed hair of four children and myself.

By then it was 11am !

Took kids to soft play for a couple of hours.

Came home retidied kids room.
Cleaned kitchen and unloaded/ reloaded dishwasher. Then did the rest of the delicate dishes by hand and dried them and put them away.

Fed cats, gave kids snack and juice.

DH came home and did the hoovering in living room and dining room (hurrah) and brought a bottle of Wine What a lovely husband I have Grin

Finished for today :)

But I hadn't done hardly anything for the last few days, except clear up after ill kids Blush ...so it really needed it today !

Solo · 09/04/2015 02:28

Well, today my Ds actually helped me! we loaded up the car (twice!) and took a load of stuff to the storage place and I dropped 3 big bags of toys and bits and pieces off to a charity shop. I feel particularly good because I wanted to sell a huge bag of toys, but just thought "no! it's going" and it went! Grin.
More tomorrow!

How are things Babies?

Tomorrow the big (crt) tv and stand and desktop pc monitor are going to the tip! I might even give the other stuff to a charity shop (bike, scooter, skates and more!!) go me!!

Ds's old bed slats gone!

I do feel like I'm talking to myself, but 'documenting' my progress Hmm could be good for me anyway.

Can I join? I've got to get to grips with the house! We moved to a new area a couple of years back, and some lovely people have tried to befriend us but we've not been able to invite them round at the house is in such a state most of the time! The mess is also affecting our relationship, and our sanity! We're both messy, it can't be pinned on either one of us.

We had a good go at it this weekend. DP and I went for it - we started just trying to tackle the chaos in the front room, and ended up pulling everything out and rearranging it. It's still not fit for visitors yet but getting there - my god was there a load of crap behind the furniture! We also got the second floating shelf up (only bought it 2 years ago!)

We also made a big dent on the conservatory. It was a dumping ground, I'm turning it into a play area as our garden is miniscule.

Just got to finish them off and tackle the kitchen, dining room, cupboard of doom in the hallway, DS's room, study/dumping ground and our bedroom to do now!

We've made a great start though, I'm really pleased about it.

wigglylines · 05/05/2015 00:48

Sorry I really hope that doesn't sound like I'm gloating or being smug!

It's a big step forward for us, we need to keep the momentum going so we don't slip backwards, I've had enough of being so blimming dysfunctional, I'm nearly 40 FFS!

Solo · 06/05/2015 01:24

Hi wigglylines :) do, please join me us. No, no gloating, just progress! and that's a brilliant thing :)
I can totally relate with you and am in need of getting more done. And soon.

Keep posting!

Thanks solo :)

Found out I lost my job today, so am going to have to put spare time into job hunting ...

This might be a good thing though as far as cleaning goes though, I can see myself cleaning as job-hunting-avoidance once I get really sick of it, I am a master of procrastination!

Solo · 06/05/2015 09:53

Oh no!! I'm sorry to hear that :( I too am in search of a job (sort of), but trying to get the house done before I get one. I'm a great procrastinator too Blush. It's not a great thing to be IMHO. It's made my sorting out journey very lengthy.

Hope your day improves. Flowers

Four old garden chairs gone to a new home. I rescued them from being thrown out by an elderly neighbour, but had never used them, so got rid. I also did a bit of garden sorting today.
Trees coming down from Monday!
