The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

Solo · 28/12/2013 17:54

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Oh, I hope you enjoy yourself, sounds like a good plan Cike :)

Solo · 22/11/2014 02:22

Cike I haven't got energy. I have ME and am running on empty, but I have big time constraints, so I know it has to be done.
A mini break :) nice!!!

Goodness Chip I wouldn't think you'd get the contents of a one bed flat in it; not unless you've got nothing anyway! in which case, you wouldn't need a storage space! It is handy though and I plan to stack it well and use every inch! it won't be fun taking it all out again though, so I'll have to do it over an entire week or more Confused.

C4C = every little helps! it paid for the padlock!

Sorry Solo! Will remove foot from mouth!

Have fire lit already!
Going to tidy sitting room
Hoover
Have a wash on!
Need to shower!

Babieseverywhere · 22/11/2014 14:12

I want a real fire !

Had a lie in today ! Thanks to my lovely DH . The kids are keeping me awake a lot at the moment and I am on my knees with tiredness...so I really appreciated the thought...abd he successfully entertaining the kids downstairs as well.

Mega brownie points to DH Grin

Any good ideas for towel storage in the bathroom to hold loads of big towels ? Freestanding or wall mounted but less than £40

Solo · 23/11/2014 02:03

:) Don't worry Cike I'm not!!

I've done nothing today, but I have had other things to do, not skiving :)

Babies look on bay for pre used tall storage. If you live near me, you can have my dark wood effect one for nothing! I suspect it wouldn't be wide enough though really.
Tesco also sell some really nice ones; not sure about the price though.

Aww, that is so sweet Solo...sadly I need a short one too....no bigger than 110cm high, 84cm wide, by 30pm ish (could be more) deep.

he, he....I have my DH moving stuff around our main rooms. Our chest of drawers has moved into place to be the base for our high level Christmas tree. I have a month to clear all the drawers and then get rid of it after Christmas....next year we are trying a floor tree...when DD3 will be 3.5yo.

Kids computer desk has moved alongside daddys !

Looking to configure dining room alcove shelves to hold our organisation tubs and if that works...I will add louver doors or curtains to hide alcove shelves....which will mean last downstairs bookshelf can be chucked.

Babieseverywhere · 23/11/2014 15:44

Darn it...need new rails and some brackets....put off shelves till tomorrow.

Solo · 24/11/2014 00:22

:( I've got conjunctivitis! hope I can see better tomorrow or I won't get much done!!

I should add that today I took two pairs of curtains to my Mum for two of her bedrooms and a set of cushions for her newly decorated bedroom and two bedroom rugs for her guest bedroom. She seems to do well for curtains out of me! Hmm. She will also be getting my two bedside cabinets and lamps to go on them.
I'm going to empty my two current chests of drawers to go to my niece and I will box up clothing I won't need to use now and put the stuff I do into my wardrobes.

I bought a Flip Folder and can highly recommend them! not only do they fold everything easily and beautifully, but it seems to make clothing smaller! Hmm.

Much to do...much to do.

Solo, Hope your eyes feel better soon.

Sounds like your mum is doing well out of you AND you are getting loads of stuff out of your house...well done :)

I have pulled everything out of medical cabinet and chest of drawers from bathroom. Chest of drawers broken down in hallway for friend to pick up (he burns it in his fire)

Medicine cabinet cleaned and in the process of shifting through the rest of the contents...have to finish before bedtime as it is on my bed !

Solo · 25/11/2014 00:34

Grin She is!!! I was still hesitant about letting them go though...not cured yet then!!

Today has been very busy! I have taken lots of boxes to the storage; I'm worried that it won't be big enough though. Loads of books, toys and soft toys now down there.

I can actually walk through my living room!! there's still a way to go though.
I went through a lot more stuff today and have thrown out a lot of rubbish too. I now have another bookcase empty, but don't know whether to keep hold of it and maybe put it in the shed to stack things on...will decide at some point soon.

Picture frames and photos in them now boxed.

Ds was supposed to help me with emptying the loft this afternoon/evening, but of course, that didn't happen. He has an inset day on Wednesday, so I'm hoping to get him working then.

A wash load done and hung to dry.

Chicken was cooked before lunchtime, so I didn't have to worry about that this afternoon.

I'm flying! low, but I've definitely taken off!!! Grin

Babies! you are doing well too!!

Solo · 30/11/2014 01:39

Lazy day today really.

One more item collected by a really ungrateful and ill mannered woman today.
Monday, ski poles being collected.
Tuesday, someone is collecting a large set of Encyclopaedias along with the bookcases.

Tuesday I aim to fill up a load of boxes with my clothing that's in two chests of drawers in my room and then give the furniture to my niece. The boxed clothes will go into storage for now. So will my small vinyl collection, CD collection (even smaller) and my CD units and large table lamp.

My brother may have my bed base in which case, I'll need to find somewhere to empty 4 drawers into, but I will anyway because it's definitely going one way or another. Mum is having my bedside tables and lamps, so that'll only leave my wardrobes and mattress in the room.
I am going to go through my wardrobe shelves and use the Flip n Fold in order to get the clothing neat and tidy and taking up less room.

And breathe!!

Solo · 01/12/2014 00:03

Might be able to do the clothing tomorrow now which will be great!! :)
