How do you keep little boy legs warm in winter

I feel like one ignorant mum posting this but well, little girls can wear warm leggings in winter. Boys are stuck with jeans or tracks. How do you keep their legs warm for outside play? I have a two year old. It wasn't a problem for the last two winters (snowsuits to the rescue) but this year we need something different......

Tights or the thermal leggings that they wear for football.

Titsalinabumsquash · 17/09/2013 13:42

I'll be getting DS tights, in fact I've just looked on H&M online and it's a very refreshing look! Lots of colours in the boys section and even some (shock horror Wink) pink!

I'm going to be getting DS's whole winter wardrobe from there I think. Smile

MummytoMog · 17/09/2013 13:43

DS has always worn tights under his trousers in the cold weather. Last year, DH complained and said that he wanted some too Grin

MrsOakenshield · 17/09/2013 13:43

goodness, I have a girl and have never put leggings on under trousers, I just do tights (how are tights more bother than leggings for trips to the loo - genuinely don't understand that). You can get plain black/grey/navy tights if you don't want anything too girly.

Feelslikea1sttimer · 17/09/2013 13:46

My teenage boys often steal my leggings to wear under their jeans/joggers when it is really cold.

My youngest (13) even wore them under his shorts when he played football on the cold Sunday mornings to stop freezing until a jobsworth referee banned them and he had to have bare knees exposed to the elements (the ref wore joggers!)

MrGeresHamster · 17/09/2013 13:49

Tights tights tights tights tights. DH is even starting to get jealous of DS and me in our tights under trousers warmth.

Anyone know where you can get nice thick tights for 6'4'' men?

CatAmongThePigeons · 17/09/2013 13:53

MrGeres here should do them long enough, or Primark!

I've known squaddies to wear women's tights in winter, sso it's not just for women and children.

DS2 has Primark leggings and DS1 has thermals. I do need to buy some more so I must find some decent ones now!

My DS (4 years old) has just started a school where he can wear trousers only from Oct half term to Feb Half term. Shock

At all other times, he is required to wear shorts. I am really dreading the cold weather now.

Will it be appropriate to make him wear tights under shorts in Feb?

PassTheTwiglets · 17/09/2013 14:18

Tights are, well, tighter :) I've always found them much harder to pull up and to get comfy so that you don't have that 'crotch hanging at your knees' thing, whereas leggings pull up easily, like trousers.

PassTheTwiglets · 17/09/2013 14:19

Halfling, are you in the UK? That is MAD of the school - it can snow in March, FFS!

nickelbabe · 17/09/2013 14:22

Halfling - it's obviously "traditional" - long socks is the only answer

whatsonyourplate · 17/09/2013 14:29

these footless tights are good: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260930288365?var=560075810537&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

lovinbeingmum · 17/09/2013 14:39

Wow! What a response! Thanks everyone. Off to place some orders...so glad I asked. Not too worried about the being gay bit..as someone mentioned :)...just didn't want anyone cracking a joke at his expense because of my foolishness. He'll get enough of that as he grows :)

babykittle · 17/09/2013 15:05

Amazon do tights/trousers for both boys and girls, we have a pair of these. Only two pounds

VisualiseAHorse · 17/09/2013 15:11

Tights are ace. Means he can't pull his socks off either!

VisualiseAHorse · 17/09/2013 15:17

Also, if are worried about people making jokes about him wearing tights...no one is going to see, they're under his trousers!

It's very common in places like Poland, a Polish friend suggested it to me in fact!

Halfling · 17/09/2013 15:41

Yes, this is a boys school in Berkshire. Very good school but with some really odd school rules and uniform.

stealthsquiggle · 17/09/2013 15:46

Halfling - boys at my DC's school wear cord shorts year round until Y4. They all seem to survive.

curlew · 17/09/2013 15:50

Everyone knows the upper classes are impervious to cold! Grin

nickelbabe · 17/09/2013 17:12

I think it's only british people who care - in mainland europe, it's very common for boys to wear tights.
most oft hose items on ebay are mde for the european market.

stealthsquiggle · 17/09/2013 17:40

Is that why DS started complaining in Y3, Curlew? He must have been old enough for the class distinctions to become apparent Grin

More seriously, outside time is actually largely spent in tracksuits, over trousers and wellies, so they don't really wear shorts year round - except in their (well heated) classrooms.
