Washing on line overnight-slovenly?

When the weather is kind-of reliable like now, I tend to put my washing out in the evening ready for the next day (3 young children, 2 of which I need to get ready for and take to school).

This saves me time and my sanity in the mornings, but I remember in the past my mom saying it used to be frowned upon. I know the washing will get damp overnight but on a hot day will then just dry throughout the day, so is there a reason why this might be frowned upon (I'm not going to stop, unless it's in some way harmful to the clothes. I don't mind if the neighbours think I'm a slattern!).

It's not slatternly it's just being organised. Definitely won't harm your clothes unless you leave them out so long that the pegs go rusty Grin

BirdyBedtime · 07/06/2013 10:54

Very sensible IMO. I don't do it often but have done as I hate taking in drying that's not quite dry and having to put out again next day or hang inside. Also as you say as long as it's not going to bucket down all night, it's a great time saver the next day. Does no harm to clothes at all.

MousyMouse · 07/06/2013 10:56

I wouldn't do it.
it gets damp during night and the squirrels and cats get to it.
I have an airer that I put outside in the mornings if the weather is reliably dry.

TheCountessOlenska · 07/06/2013 10:56

I do it all the time - as long as weather fairly dry. It's nice to hang it out in peace after the kids are asleep!

FaddyPeony · 07/06/2013 10:58

I do it too. It would not occur to me to care about whether anyone thought it was slatternly!

notso · 07/06/2013 11:07

It's fine...

...if you don't mind creatures in your pants!

I prefer to have it folded wet overnight to minimise creases then hang it out when the DC are eating breakfast.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 07/06/2013 11:09

People might steal the washing and it may rain so no. and it looks slatternly

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 07/06/2013 11:46

Mousy, I'm intrigued - what would the squirrels and cats actually do to the washing?

Peppermintlover · 07/06/2013 11:52

Mine has been out for two nights! Might summon up the motivation to bring it in this afternoon. I figure the longer it stays out the fresher it gets...!

MousyMouse · 07/06/2013 11:57

pull it down, scratch it, leave their hair on it.
or maybe it's just the neighbours cat

SirChenjin · 07/06/2013 11:59

I do this all the time, saves so much time when we're all trying to get out in the morning for school and work - so far, the resident squirrels and neighbour's cats (ggrrrrrrr....) have resisted the temptation of the Chen pants Grin

5madthings · 07/06/2013 12:02

....looks.out patio doors to.the.washing i put out yesterday evenimg....its.fine!

HandMini · 07/06/2013 12:06

I do it. In fact, last night it was dry but couldn't be bothered to bring it in so left it till this morn. Slatterns rule.

GibberTheMonkey · 07/06/2013 12:51

Absolutely fine in my eyes
Never had problems with creatures, large or small.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 07/06/2013 14:44

Think of the spiders!!!

lurcherlover · 07/06/2013 14:48

Can't believe I have never thought to do this before! I'm starting tonight and I don't like my neighbours so actually hope it annoys them

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 07/06/2013 14:48

LOL at 'when the weather is kind of reliable - like now'... it's tipping down here and it was supposed to be a sunny 25 degree afternoon - typical british 'summer' Grin

It wont hurt it one bit, it wont even hurt it if it gets rained on :)

flatmum · 07/06/2013 14:50

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, but I put everything in the drier - usually overnight for convenience

LifeOfPee · 07/06/2013 14:53

I left mine out all day and night and then half of today too. Couldn't be bothered to bring it in last night and was busy this morning.

I don't give a rat's ass if it is slovenly.

VinegarDrinker · 07/06/2013 14:56

We do this all the time.

Record was 4 days last summer - it kept raining and getting wet again, then the sun would come out so we'd leave it out to dry, then it would rain again....

LEMisdisappointed · 07/06/2013 14:59

mine has been there three days - thst quite good for me

MrsHoarder · 07/06/2013 15:03

I judge my neighbour for doing this. I'm not sure why, it just looks unkempt unwedges judgey pants

HandMini · 07/06/2013 15:05

Ahh, nothing like seeing the sun rise over a pair of pants flapping on the line.

GibberTheMonkey · 07/06/2013 16:18

How can it look more unkempt than normal
During the day washing hanging outside drying is normal
At night it's dark so you can't see it surely

usualsuspect · 07/06/2013 16:21

It's fine, I leave mine out for days.

My mother doesn't approve though, she's was most disgusted that her neighbours washing had been out for a week Grin
