Washing on line overnight-slovenly?

lucamom · 07/06/2013 10:49

When the weather is kind-of reliable like now, I tend to put my washing out in the evening ready for the next day (3 young children, 2 of which I need to get ready for and take to school).

This saves me time and my sanity in the mornings, but I remember in the past my mom saying it used to be frowned upon. I know the washing will get damp overnight but on a hot day will then just dry throughout the day, so is there a reason why this might be frowned upon (I'm not going to stop, unless it's in some way harmful to the clothes. I don't mind if the neighbours think I'm a slattern!).

I do it all the time, can't see how it looks any different on the line at night than it does in the day, apart from that it's dark at night.

No cat nor squirrel not any other beast has ever done anything to my washing! Day or night!

I never wipe my line either.

Double slovenly points for me.

morethanpotatoprints · 07/06/2013 16:27

I'd make sure you all bring it in tonight as weather due to change, and that means rain tonight.
twas good whilst it lasted.

MammaMedusa · 07/06/2013 16:28

I have done it, have never had noticeable bugs!

OrmirianResurgam · 07/06/2013 16:29

How odd. But people are odd sometimes.

KikeriFreedomCastle · 07/06/2013 16:31

My grandmother would have called it common and slatternly.

I'd do it if you don't mind the bugs, why not.

Startail · 07/06/2013 16:33

I do forget the washing sometimes, the birds don't.

Always 50/50 whether end item has to be re washed.

Damnautocorrect · 07/06/2013 16:34

I just woke ds up laughing at the thought of squirrels and cats parading around in my dresses - brilliant!

I do it if I know its going to be dry.

WarTime · 07/06/2013 16:36

Isn't washing left on the line one of the things to look out for if you're a good neighbour? i.e. if they haven't taken into in they could be unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. I couldn't do it , imagine the police turning up to investigate Grin

Startail · 07/06/2013 16:44

Next door may well be unconscious, when their washing is left out, but not due to falling down the stairs.

usualsuspect · 07/06/2013 16:52

I left an old towel on the line for month once, no bugger came round to see if I was in a heap at the bottom of the stairs.

Lousmart · 07/06/2013 17:00

I do it too. It's saves so much time! But, the main reason I do it is because it annoys my neighbour to death! She annoys me to death the rest of the time, so it's my revenge. I've had more creepy crawlies in daytime washing than stuff left over night.

Frostyfoxy · 07/06/2013 17:08

My washing line is so high up in the air I reckon pilots could unpeg it for me as they passed overhead!! (I'm in Wales and all the washing lines are high up for some reason but I mis-measured my requirement when I ordered the scaffolding poles with accessories attached to make the line!!)

I don't leave mine out overnight as I don't like to for some unexplained reason, but my neighbour always hangs hers out at night and leaves it till the next night to bring it in, I have no idea why as she is home all day every day! Mind you, thinking about it, I never see her during the day...... perhaps she is a bat.....Hmm

ShadowStorm · 07/06/2013 20:54

I do this.

And I have never experienced squirrels or cats or thieves tampering with my washing.

Birds sometimes poo on my washing Angry , but that's generally something that only happens in the daytime.

Tootingbec · 07/06/2013 21:02

I am the queen of time saving/multi tasking and therefore hanging out the washing the night before is one of my favourite tricks. Causes my DH no end of hilarity to see me fumbling around at 10pm hanging up his pants

BrawToken · 07/06/2013 21:02

I do this but I only put underwear on the pulley in the kitchen.

TapselteerieO · 07/06/2013 21:02

I have left my washing on the line in winter, frozen clothes shaped boards. I live in Scotland, I am the eternal optimist, if it isn't actually raining I will hang it out.

SirChenjin · 07/06/2013 21:09

This has been bugging me all day - why would squirrels and cats only disturb your clothes at night? Unless you are staring out at your washing all the time it's out during the day in order to chase away small furry creatures, isn't it just as likely to happen in daylight? Confused

VinegarDrinker · 07/06/2013 21:37

We don't get cats, squirrels, bugs or spiders on our washing. I feel hard done by!

(We get plenty of all of those, just not on the washing line)

Happiestinwellybobs · 07/06/2013 21:42

I do it. Have been known to peg out at 11.30pm Grin. I don't always have time in the morning, and if I know it's going to be a fine day, it makes sense.

shallweshop · 07/06/2013 21:53

Laughing my socks off at the thought of squirrels and cats in my washing. Just trying to imagine them leaping into my pants hanging up on my rotary line!

VinegarDrinker · 07/06/2013 21:56

We have a rotary line, too. Can they tightrope walk? Would it make the line spin round? I may have to set up a webcam...

hugoagogo · 07/06/2013 22:06

I love doing this in the warm weather, it means that it gets all that early morning sun.

But maybe I should be worried about wildlife? Next doors cat sleeps at the bottom of the garden and we have a visiting squirrel and a red Kite, wonders how big a red kite poo would be [scared]

Tortington · 07/06/2013 22:08

i really dont give a shit what my neighbours think. really. if its out and it rains - it stays out - what fucking point is there in bringing it in?
