Butter, marmite, honey, nutella in the fridge or not?

I keep getting in trouble with the family for putting these 4 things back in the fridge, it's annoying I know when they are rock solid and impossible to spread but with kitchens being warm with heating on, is it really ok? Just wondered what others do.

Nutella definitely not.

Marmite We don't eat it but I want to say no.

Butter is that spreadable stuff that goes awful if kept out of the fridge.

Honey is kept in cupboard.

Engelsemama · 25/03/2013 08:05

We don't put any of those things in the fridge but then we tend to have our ch at 18 degrees so SIL keeps her coat on when she visits

SunshineOutdoors · 25/03/2013 08:05

Marmite and honey in the cupboard here. Butter we have spreadable so in the fridge. Don't have a clue about Nutella, sorry.

Dirtymistress · 25/03/2013 08:06

I wouldn't put any of those things in the fridge. I am still alive! I don't put eggs in the fridge either. I think you might be a little bit crazy...

SunshineOutdoors · 25/03/2013 08:07

I would be a little annoyed if I wanted marmite and couldn't spread it because it had been in the fridge. I wouldn't be horrible though, it's not too big a deal Smile

SoMuchToBits · 25/03/2013 08:07

We don't eat nutella, but all the other things I keep in the cupboard. Our house is always warm, but even in the hot weather we never have any problems. The worst that happens when it's really hot is the butter gets a bit soft...

MirandaWest · 25/03/2013 08:08

My kitchen is pretty cold so Nutella doesn't go in the fridge - is bad enough when it's in a cupboard near the window. Has recently been moved. If you put honey in the fridge I think it would crystallise quicker and anyway I don't think honey exactly goes off. Marmite is the work of the devil so doesn't exist in this house. Spreadable butter does go in the fridge but normal butter doesn't.

SunshineOutdoors · 25/03/2013 08:08

I don't put eggs in the fridge either. Do keep all veggies in the fridge though, I find it a struggle to fit everything in the fridge, probably due to this.

ArseAche · 25/03/2013 08:08

none in fridge. especially not nuttella so my dc tell me. Apparently it tastes horrible once it has been in there/

foxrivereight · 25/03/2013 08:08

Nutella goes brick hard like an actual bar of chocolate when you put it in the fridge .

HermioneE · 25/03/2013 08:09

Read the Nutella jar, it specifically says not to refrigerate iirc. Marmite and honey also no need. Butter- spreadable yes, normal up to you.

pussinwellyboots · 25/03/2013 08:09

Don't put honey in the fridge as it crystallises and you have to sit in boiling water to sort out. butter I store in fridge nuttela and marmite I would store in larder.

SamsGoldilocks · 25/03/2013 08:10

I wouldn't put honey or marmite in the fridge. I would put jam.

I prefer to leave the butter out so you can spread it, but my cat likes to eat it so it stays in the fridge.

GinAndSlimlinePlease · 25/03/2013 08:10

our kitchen has no heating so is like a giant fridge anyway.

But all of yours should be left out except the butter in a hot day.

jam and marmalade belongs in the fridge though!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/03/2013 08:11

It actually says on the nutella jar "do not store in fridge, keep at room temperature"

GinAndSlimlinePlease · 25/03/2013 08:12

eggs don't need to go in the fridge, but they need a stable temperature. which in my kitchen is more likely in the fridge.

Allalonenow · 25/03/2013 08:12

Of your four items, I'd only put butter in the fridge. The nutella jar is even marked Do Not Refridgerate!

AgentProvocateur · 25/03/2013 08:14

I hate soft Nutella, so the DC are allowed to eat 3/4 of the jar from the cupboard, but that last quarter jar goes in the fridge for me to chisel away at when I pass.

Marmite, honey, jam etc in the cupboard. Spreadable butter in the fridge

legohamster · 25/03/2013 08:16

Thanks guys. My kids are going to be pleased to hear you all agree with them, they'll be telling me to leave the ketchup out next!

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 25/03/2013 08:19

I don't think you need to put ketchup in the fridge. My mum never did and I'm alive. Dh disagrees though so to keep the peace it's in the fridge, he also reckons it should be thrown out six weeks after opening just because it says so on the bottle. Boils my piss when I've got chips and then discover he's binned the ketchup. He doesn't even eat it!

ilovepowerhoop · 25/03/2013 08:19

I dont keep ketchup in the fridge either!

mrsbungle · 25/03/2013 08:25

I keep none of those things in the fridge nor do I keep ketchup in the fridge.

Bearandcub · 25/03/2013 08:27

Butter is spreadable so stays in fridge. Jam goes into the fridge. Otherwise everything else goes into the larder/ big cupboard. Ketchup too.

Only Marmite goes in our fridge of that list. But ketchup does.

And we've started fridging potatoes to stop our dastardly dogs searching the cupboards for them!!
