FLYing through March: Fledglings Assemble

SilveryMoon · 28/02/2013 20:10

Welcome to the March Fledgling FLYers thread

... where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of and chatting along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that we can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave us with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling we get when we are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once.

To avoid being inundated with details, we advise not signing up to the Big Tent

We are in the process of following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

Flylady site here

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

All the links for the babysteps and missions will be posted here every day and we'll all be here to cheer each other on.

Thanks to SC and Blue for leading us through January and February and for the brilliant OP I've just cut and pasted .

Let's get the old dust balls rolling for March!

Silvery I will lead the thread in May - it will help me focus! And I have a whole month to practise linking things Grin. although it sounds complicated

About the bear icon - it is on my iPhone mn app: I just click it! Am not a technical whizz! But SC has managed a bear in one of her posts so she may be able to enlighten us when she trots in Smile.

Crikey both of you!! [Averts eyes from Silvery's and WhereChaos's lists] - your turn to put us to shame!! Grin [Hands over soft fluffy slippers and foot-rests]

Silvery - PA and her dh and family are doing amazing missionary work in Cambodia

All that cooking looks wonderful Wherechaos

Silvery/ Castle I just typed [ bear ] without spaces around word... and it worked!! Grin Tries again .... Bear!!

Castle V. kind of you to volunteer for May - don't think we have ever had volunteers "queuing up" before!! Grin

Ellesababe Good to hear your dh's eye is OK! Re: thread - I'm an old hat at keeping track of people only because PA and I (along with Ellie Whoknows Toffee Wherechaos Feetheart Nettie Pushme Swan and loads and loads of others) set up this thread in 2009 you'd think my house would be wonderfully decluttered, spotless and- ordered by now wouldn't you? and have been taking turns with everyone else in running it ever since - it's a real collaborative effort. I get horribly confused by name changes though and am usually the last to work them all out to the great confusion of everyone else ... so mental capacity pretty woeful really!! Grin Oh and doing a load of personals is a great way to draw attention away from my own lack of Flying Blush Grin

Engels thanks so much for advice/support re: dd's schooling issues. I have never heard of "faalangst" so will definitely investigate and ask about that - that's a much appreciated and really useful bit of advice. Didn't know such a thing existed in the Dutch system.

(We have to contend with a mix of French rigid education system and Dutch rigid education system over here- which results in rigidity gone mad!!).

I feel exactly the same way as you do about it all - right down to the relief at being able to give up maths and sciences and concentrate on the arts at A-level (apologies to all the maths teachers/accountants and science buffs on here!)

We are going to be looking at more international options once we have overcome this immediate hurdle (although the one International School here which we really like and would consider is so mahoosively expensive I don't think we could afford it (most dc there have their fees paid for by the global companies that their parents are working for). The system in all the schools though (whether state or private) are horribly pressured). Maybe it is time to re-consider UK options??? Not sure atm because, at same time, it would split the family (dh has to work here) and it would be a shame for her to lose all her languages. Gah!

Good luck with the major moderation deadline on Thursday and very Envy of your plans for the office/attic reorganisation which sounds fab! (My dh has been asleep half the w/e too btw!) And aw at your mini romantic poet (now shorn!)

Whoknows ditto - mahoosive snow fall here (4 inches at least on garden) and more due tonight. We actually have stalactites of ice hanging above the outdoor steps from cellars to terrace!

Well done for facing the scary driving MrsB

Louise movie + warm fire sounds perfect for this weather!

Good going with the decluttering Goth

[Looks sternly at Toffee at mention of falling asleep at hairdressers] Remember to take care of yourself in the middle of everything that is happening!

Huge waves to Pushme Pa Just Trazzles and everyone else.

All this talk of steak pies and lemon cake has made me hungry ....so off to investigate fridge. CBA to do whole roast thing today.

There ... by doing loads of personals ... have successfully avoided mentioning a distinct lack of Flying on my part today!! Grin

superfluouscurves · 24/03/2013 18:05

Bear Bear Bear

getting carried away now! Grin

SilveryMoon · 24/03/2013 18:18
Bear I was here in 2009, probably under name LittleBoyBlue (I think) to begin with. That's great about PA and her family! Amazing but I imagine very challenging. Good on you and your family PA.

Have LOADS of ironing to do and dp wants fajita's for dinner. Might get him to cook it, if i eat, I won't wanna iron.
Bear

I'm sorry Silvery I knew you were an old timer - I was just foiled by the name changes again! Blush Apologies!

SilveryMoon · 24/03/2013 18:30

You're alright sc I don't expect anyone to remember me, I think I was only around for a few months and after that was on and off. I dropped off completely because I couldn't keep up with the thread and felt bad that everyone was doing these big personals and i couldn't find the time to post back.
Then there were 2 threads, the original and another for newbies, so I started posted on both which got too much but felt guilty about dropping one and keeping another so I dropped both.
Anyway, that's not very interesting Smile
Where do you live sc? I lose track

OP posts:
ellesabe · 24/03/2013 18:50

Hi everyone! Another day of illness here but at least I'm tied to a chair bfing dd2 so dh has to sort out dd1's runs

Tada
Showered, S&S and dressed
Made dd's packed lunch
Put clothes away
Went to church
Ate lunch (dh cleared up)
Went to asda
Made bottom layer of millionaire shortbread
Cooked and ate dinner
Girls bathed and put to bed

To do
Clear up dinner
Make caramel for millionaire shortbread
Have a bath
Shine sink

chaos - your list has inspired the sudden making of millionaire shortbread by the way...I may come to get you when I run out of motivation Grin

silvery and others - I have never quite understood the purpose of name changes...is it just to reduce the risk of being identified in real life?

SilveryMoon · 24/03/2013 19:40

elles I namechanged after ds2 arrived. I went with LittleBoysBlue for a bit, but was wrong. Went through a couple of others before I settled on SilveryMoon. I also felt a bit daft when I met up with other MNers and had to introduce myself as LBB, and someone on my post-natal thread said she assumed the name came about because I'd have a boy and was PND, so decided I needed a change.
It's def not for privacy reasons. Lots of my friends know I'm here and know my chat name. My twitter is under silverymoon and is linked to my RL named fb account.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 24/03/2013 19:46

I have namechanged once or twice, my first name on here was a Mrs one, which was meant ironically as well as for disguise as I am a Ms not a Mrs in real life. However after posting on numerous threads about how much I hate being called Mrs and prefer Ms I started getting embarrassed by it, so I changed it to something DS kept saying at the time, but got bored of that and one day this song title just popped into my head (I love the song) so that is who I have been ever since.

I've also been making sweet stuff again today, we are very much a yogurt and fruit only household for puddings, but have decided the DCs are missing out a bit so we are doing a proper pudding every sunday, it was baked cheesecake tonight, little indvidual ones done in muffin cases, really yummy.

ellesabe · 24/03/2013 19:46

Oh okay... Grin

SilveryMoon · 24/03/2013 19:47

Had better round-up

Engels dh cooked dinner today (lucky you!) and has been putting video clips on her computer for Moderation. This week is it?
sc Thanks for the footrest and slippers, will need them in a bit. Just a few more things to do now but have ironed 23 items, so tempted to stop now and do more tomorrow.
elles sorry to hear you are still in the house of lurgy. Hope everyone feels better soon.

Not much to report here. I need to lay out clothes, pack bags for tomorrow, shine sink, wipe down kitchen counters, thinking about more ironing and go to bed.
Only 3 and a half days left now. Roll on Thursday 1pm.

Back in a bit with links.

Morning. I'm at home today with a poorly ds2. I'm not fully convinced he is unwell enough to not go to school but he looks very tired and is still snuffly.
I hate calling in sick to work.
I've told him no Disney Junior and no computer, people who are too poorly to go to school have to stay in bed or lay on the sofa watching Jeremy Kyle mummy's programs. Also if he's still ill tomorrow that daddy will stay at home soI'm

Afternoon all. Have had a fairly chilled day so far. Silly since I still have so much work to do to meet my deadline on Thursday. But I feel like I've done most of the hard work (the marking) so now all I have to do is put it all together (edit video and collate students' work). Boring and tiresome but easy.

Ta da
Skyped DM to show her DS's lovely haircut
Went to nearby children's farm to give DS a chance to run around and get freaked out by ducks

That is about it! Am currently scanning in work while DS naps. Hoping that I get it all done this afternoon so that I can relax and enjoy the rest of the week.

To do
What's for dinner - thinking lasagne
Put some washing on
Washing up
Mission (am ready to start flying again now)

It is bitterly cold here but the sun is actually shining. I feel like it's really time for 2013 to get started after the past few months of feeling down and ill. Made plans to meet a friend for lunch on Friday, going to start running tomorrow and when I'm finished with Moderation am going to make a plan for next week (have a week easter holiday) so that I can crack on with the garden and feel like I've achieved something.

Sending you all some sunshine.
