Actually wash your filters every 3 months?

I have just washed mine after 12 months - I know this because I was heavily pregnant and 'nesting' the last time I did it!

It makes a huge difference to the suction strength. So I would recommend doing it, if you haven't for a while. it is like having a new vacuum cleaner.

I always forget! Do you just rinse under the tap?

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 28/02/2013 16:54

Yes rinse with cold water, until water runs clear and dry for 24 hours.

Yes I do, mine is once a month and takes a couple of days to dry in winter. (I heard horror stories of motors burning out if filter not clean). You are supposed to put it outside in the sun!!!

twentythirteen · 28/02/2013 17:03

I've done it twice, I've had it for about 3 years. It sounds like it's on its last legs though!

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 28/02/2013 17:03

I put mine on top of radiator.

Do it twentythirteen, then get all enthused about your new suction power. < note to self, must get out more >

More suction power? I will indeedy! I just made a note, we're away for a few days so I will clean it before we go and it will have plenty of time to dry!

chubbychipmonk · 28/02/2013 18:09

How do you wash the filter? What bit is the filter?? The bit at the top with holes in? ( sorry if stupid question - 37 weeks pregnant & total baby brain!!!)

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 28/02/2013 18:43

Have you got an upright chubbychipmunk? On mine, the filter is under the bin / dust collecter bit. And there is a second one bottom right. There are visual instructions stuck to both filter parts which tell you how to take out filter and wash them!

Yeah I've got an upright yellow & grey one. . I'm nesting furiously, can't believe I didn't know I could do this!! Am starting right now!!!! Smile

ceres · 01/03/2013 09:03

i wash the filters and also take the whole cyclone and bin apart and wash those too.

my dyson works as well as it did when we got it and it is getting on for 10 years old now.

squiddle · 01/03/2013 14:05

I think I have done my twice - it is 10 years old. It is falling to bits so have just ordered a new hoover. I will change the filters regularly!!

Shesparkles · 01/03/2013 14:07

I msy sold my first one after almost 13 years- you should have seen how clean it was for selling Grin

chubbychipmonk · 02/03/2013 16:34

O.m.g!! It's like a whole new Hoover!! This has seriously been the highlight of my weekend!!! -really need to get out more-

chubbychipmonk · 02/03/2013 16:35

Thanks Thank you no one. . . You've made a mad nesting pregnant woman very happy!!

Otherworld · 02/03/2013 16:41

Filter? Never. Oops.

clopper · 02/03/2013 16:53

Who knew? Have never cleaned it! We were just discussing getting a new one as it had started to lose suction. fingers crossed this will work and save a bit of money. Thanks for posting this.

reastie · 03/03/2013 18:22

You have to clean it?! Shock . My dyson is edging ten years old and I don't think I've ever cleaned it. Will try tomorrow and see if it makes a difference!

BananasInBikinis · 05/03/2013 20:46

I joined Mumsnet just to thank you for this tip! Just cleaned the filter for the first time in 8 years and the difference is fantastic!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 05/03/2013 20:49

I can't remeber the last time I cleaned the filters in ours (there's 2 I think)

Will Hoover on Friday then do it before we go away for the weekend and look forward to hoovering again when we're back!

AdoraBell · 06/03/2013 01:27

Pah! Gets done when I remember.

Purplemonster · 06/03/2013 23:34

You really do need to wash the filters, they go bang otherwise (speaks from bitter experience)

CheeseAndMushroomToastie · 06/03/2013 23:35

Thanks for reminding me to do this op...those who clean the drum bit, how do you do this, just wipe with damp cloth? My hand doesn't fit in it Blush also need to clean my handheld dyson too but again only thing I can get in it with my fat hands is a toothbrush Blush
