If your house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with more time to do other more interesting things instead! At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings. Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound (and you may discover a few of our subversions of the vocabularly along the way).

Many thanks to blue for leading the thread through November (and sc for such a good OP, which has been cut and pasted twice!) Thanks and I'll post the first babysteps and mission tomorrow evening.

All welcome!!

Hi all , I've totally lost track of the thread and have only done the most basic bits of housework - kept on top of the laundry, feeding us all, and washing up, and even vacuumed yesterday. So the place isn't awful, but it's not great. The bathroom could definitely use some attention. But, I knew this was going to happen over the festive season, so I'm not giving myself a hard time about it. Will definitely be putting more effort into it in the new year, I feel like I've got a morning routine reasonably established now, so that's a good start. I am going to have to look into this "control journal" business. I've tried making cleaning schedules and lists before, but have never managed to stick to them.

laurenamium · 30/12/2012 23:40

Dashing by with links!

Tomorrow is the last day of December!

Babystep 31 is here but I can't work out what it is!

Monday is home bleugh

We are back to zone 1: the entrance porch and dining room the detailed cleaning list is here

Tomorrow's mission is here but I can't tell you what it is because it hasn't updated yet!

Goodnight everyone!

bakerofcakes · 31/12/2012 06:55

Good Morning, just a quick check in before I go to work.

I think the babystep is just a bit of encouragement lauren

I usually do the home bleugh over the weekend, just got to change the sheets tonight as we have friends staying for the new year, and empty the bins after the bin men have been. Today's mission was done as part of my general tidy up yesterday. Off to a New Year's Eve party tonight.

Happy New Year everyone.

elliepac · 31/12/2012 08:20

morning all. Have been away for a few days, mainly because I have spent a large portion of time lounging on the sofaGrin . I have however been very good at my routines for once and I have a relatively tidy house and hardly any washing to doShock .

Whoever posted about 8 yr old attitude ( am in phone so can't scroll back) I just wanted to say I hear you. DS is 9 and, at times, an ungrateful, entitled whingebag. He is also going through a phrase of answering back which he has never done before. I suppose I might have to accept that my baby boy is growing up but am rather reluctant to do so! Punishment in this house is normally removal of screen time and sending to bedroom. It's just not nice is it.

big waves to everyone else. Smile

laurenamium · 31/12/2012 08:48

Morning everyone!

Thanks baker I couldn't work it out! I suppose not all months have 31 days so it wouldn't be a very important one last!

Waves to ellie and anyone else about!

List dump, DD is still asleep!

To do:
My laundry- just started in wash machine
Walk dogs
Home bleugh
Take tree down and decorations, move furniture back etc
Clean out guinea pigs
Wash bedding
Clean windows
Routines
Mums for family dinner (just soup this time luckily for my diet!)
Friend round tonight

I probably will be back but just incase, happy new year everyone!

Morning all
baker aren't you supposed to empty your bins before the binmen come??? Wink

I am going to try hard not to fall off this thread again. I recognise some names from the last time I was here. It get's tricky because I miss so much on the thread during the day, sometimes pages and then find it hard to catch up and feel bad posting if I've not read replies.

Today's list:
Sort dry washing
Empty washing machine
Routines
Ironing
Tesco
Half hour study
Detail/mission
room rescue

I'm also babysitting today. I have my friend's 6 yo while she works and then it's off to her house this evening for a few quiet drinks because dp's working late.
Off now to check the links find out exactly where I am.

BitchyDragons · 31/12/2012 10:40

i mostly just trip in scan thread list dump and run away silvery
ellie yep yep to the screen ban as well as time in his room.

I really don't want to move right now but really do need to get up. aparently ds has broken the book case waiting to be mended :( and he is not in a great mood atm. I have a headache. not a great start to the day really Hmm

Hope you all have fabulous celebrations/evenings!!!

BitchyDragons · 31/12/2012 10:42

Sorry you might want to dump some commas in that first sentence. Blush

SilveryMoon · 31/12/2012 11:03

Sorry your day is off to a bad start bitchy, hope it gets better.

I'm not even sure I need to bother with a control journal do I? Who has one and who doesn't? I remember a few years back a few of us started to compile one at same time. It's just another thing to clutter a work top isn't it? the website looks like it has everything there. But if I don't have one, will I forget where I am?

ToffeeWhirl · 31/12/2012 11:26

I found having a control journal helped me focus on what to do each day when I was starting out. I don't use it anymore, though I might need to update it for the New Year.

Not sure what today holds. We were planning a long walk with dog and DC, but it's awful weather. This evening, we are having neighbours round early in the evening. Hoping for a quiet New Year (and am not planning on sliding down any stairs this year Blush).

MrsPennyapple · 31/12/2012 11:38

Hi all.

Bathroom is now clean, with shower curtain and DD's bath toys sitting in the bath in bleachy water. Next batch of laundry is in and I'm currently folding clean stuff ready to put away. Will try and get the veg for dinner prepared through the day, to save time later.

Weather is pretty poor here too, but apparently going to clear up later for dog walking.

Have a good day everyone.

BitchyDragons · 31/12/2012 12:15

If you hadn't said anything I wouldn't have remembered that toffee GrinGrin

It happens silvery. Am over due a migraine. Serves me right for ditching the diet that stops them happening. But the sugar and stuff is soooooo nice sometimes. Blush

Am finally moving. Pain killer and caffine assisted Blush

ta da
get up - big accomplishment today...
1 load of washing on
assess damage to book case
not kill ds - didn't even shout Shock
Consider plans for this evening.

Deckthecastle · 31/12/2012 12:53

Ironing done
Tesco done
Half hour study
Detail/mission
room rescue

SilveryMoon · 31/12/2012 16:12

Today's list:
Sort dry washing done
Empty washing machine done
Routines
Ironing done
Tesco done
Half hour study
Detail/mission done I spent 15 mins detail hoovering and wiping walls in entrance and organising shoe rack.
room rescue done I used this time to reorganise paperwork. This will be my room rescue task for the rest of the year I'd imagine!

Looking at my old control journal, I altered it to include bathroom in zone 1. Found it too much to do alongside boys bedroom and my entrance and hallway will only take 2 days (so half an hour to sort out if I ignore missions which won't be anything that's notg included on my own zone list)

Hope everyone's having a good day. I am in near heaven, the boys have a friend over so I'm free. Might do a bit of study now, then finish day's routines before going to a friends tonight.

GoingGoingGoth · 31/12/2012 16:57

Better day today, it's good to know DD isn't the only one who plays up. She's had some time in her room today (her choice) and it's made a difference. I also got her out for a good squelch walk in the park this afternoon.

Bathroom
DD's room tidied & vacuumed (she helped)
Quick shop

Happy New Year everyone, we're away this week hence lack of posts. Been to panto this afternoon which was good but went on a bit too long and caused friction between me and DS because he spent the last half hour fidgeting uncontrollably and asking when it would be over. The DCs want to stay up till midnight, I don't!
