has anyone else had problems with a Samsung american fridge freezer?

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:30

its 4 years old.

worked for 4 years no problem, then in december last year it started to make a horrendous noise and the fridge temp went up
it got repaired. apparently
it lasted 3 months before it did it again
it got repaired
it lasted a few weeks
it got repaired
it lasted a week
it took out 5 years warranty from Comet but its about to come to an end. The repairs only seem to be temporary.
Has anyone else had any problems?
it cost just short of £1000 so im not impressed.

Had mine over 10 years, probably jinxed it now!

AuntieMaggie · 08/05/2012 22:33

No but they were on watchdog a few years ago - google watchdog samsung and you should find some info

CiderwithBuda · 08/05/2012 22:33

yep. My sister.

Hers is ok now but they have had problems. According to guy who fixed theirs it is a known problem. ...And the reason we went with Neff!

sorry.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 08/05/2012 22:33

Google Watchdog+Samsung. Yours might not be the same model, but they were notorious for breaking down a while ago. They basically had a manufacturing fault. There is also an awful lot of helpful stuff on the internet on how to attempt a repair yourself. I am about to get rid of my Samsung ff - will probably give it away! Cannot wait.

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:35

i had a letter from Samsung saying this model had burst into flames somewhere in France. great. so now while its making such a racket i can hear it upstairs i am worried.

i have tried googling samsung and watchdog before with no result....can anyone find me a link?

and does anyone have any idea what to do about it? its seriously pissing me off

It sounds like a problem with the temperature sensor in the cooling unit. We had what sound like the same problem where the fan started making a horrendous noise and the bottom of the fridge iced up. When they came out they said that the temperature sensor had gone wrong, causing a build up of ice round the fan which what makes the noise and if you don't fix it then it can't keep the fridge cool.

What repair did they do to yours?

If you google samsung american fridge freezer problems it should bring up a long discussion on MoneySavingExpert.

MaureenMLove · 08/05/2012 22:42

We had a build up of ice around the fan in ours. Thankfully DH is an electrician and knows what he's doing. He took the panels off on the inside, pulled off the ice and it's fine now.

Catsmamma · 08/05/2012 22:44

it's a known fault but you won't get anywhere with comet....they are bastards!!

something to do with the freezer thermostat being too efficient and as the fridge defrosts somehow water builds up on a fan somewhere in the depths of the fidge innards and the freezer freezes it there

hence the racket as the fan tries to turn as it is encased in ice build up.

We have had two fixes on ours and it has been fine for about three years, but it is the only appliance in the house that i have insured.

I do love it dearly though just for the crushed ice maker....but i'll never set foot in comet ever again for their customer service department is full to the brim of inadequate liars and tossers.

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:45

thanks all - ill try phoning samsung direct. its a design fault apparently. great.

forgot the strikeout (and my grammar) in above post for their customer service department is full to the brim with inadequate liars and tossers

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:48

cats thats their stock answer and its all i ever get when i ring up. im going to try samsung directly.

DaisySteiner · 08/05/2012 22:51

Mine were only interested when I lied told them we'd had it less than two years. Have you had the cooling unit replaced? If not, this is what needs doing I expect!

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:55

i suspect Comets extended warranty dept are just waiting to get shut of us and wont do anything too expensive.

i will phone them tomorrow though i am not holding my breath
i will try samsung too.

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/05/2012 22:57

just checked - its the model featured in the watchdog campaign. wonder if Samsung will honour their pledge to sort them out?

notapizzaeater · 08/05/2012 23:02

Samsung came out direct and fitted the new part in mine - then it broke a week later with something totally unrealted (or at least thats what they told me !!) after kicking up a little fuss they came and fixed it again ...

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/05/2012 18:14

well im being given the runaround.

i phoned Samsung - their call centre must be based somewhere abroad and the customer service advisor kept telling me in broken english that i would get a free engineer visit and he would quote me for the cost of the repair.

in the end she gave up and said it would be free, but i doubt it.

she says an engineer will phone within 24 hours.

i tried to ask why i would have to pay for the cost when its the model with the recall and the problem, but i couldnt understand what she was saying.

all in all im really pissed off with Samsung. the fridge was £749. To make matters worse the original receipt was taken back by Comet because i swapped another item on the same receipt, so i cant even prove the purchase date, which was 18/6/2007. Samsung are saying that they will need to take the warranty from the manufacture date which was Feb 07!!! so they are saying its out of Warranty and so i will need to pay for the repair. IMO they should have written to everyone who bought one of these models.

bastards.

Yes we had the same problem with the Samsung American Fridge freezer we inherited with our house. After 2 repairs we ditched it & bought a Neff.

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/05/2012 19:55

thing is i payed £749 for this thing, i expected it last more than 4 years. Plus i found the watchdog thing and the expert they had on said it was a design fault and not fit for purpose - surely they have to fix it?

i cant simply ditch it and buy a more expensive model. i dont have the money to do that at the moment.

OP posts:
Catsmamma · 09/05/2012 19:58

can you go through old statements and find the payment to comet??

we had to do this recently for dd's camera with argos, once they had a date and a card number they were somehow able to backtrack their system and find a receipt...cos we had bought other stuff too

aquafunf · 09/05/2012 20:14

yep, we have one. it does this every 6 months. in our case it is a build up of ice in the casing at the back, which the fan then hits.

we unplug it, defrost it and its fine. i read all the stuff on how crap they were, then stumbled across this tip on a website.

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/05/2012 20:18

im going to phone Comet and see if i can get a copy of the receipt - i have an order number.

I paid for a 5 year warranty with Comet but they havent fixed it. The same thing keeps happening - i have a warranty certificate with all the purchase info on it but it says we purchased on 1/6/2007 and it wasnt, it was 18/6/2007.

i just got the distinct feeling that Samsung were trying to wriggle out of fixing my fridge.

From what i could understand, i think there was some kind of "fix" for it....???

im not sure if 17 days makes much difference, ive reported the fault before the 5 years is up but their customer service was shit. not least because the advisor did not speak great english and she was trying to phrase things but wasnt making sense.

i did the customer satisfaction survey. i said they were shit. cos they were. Angry

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 09/05/2012 20:19

Mine is currently lasting less than 2 weeks before the build up of ice hits the fan.

OP posts:
FriskyMare · 09/05/2012 20:21

We've had ours 9 1/2 years and its only in the last couple of months that it has gone wrong, all the things mentioned above. It is now only cold/freezing at the bottom. Not worth getting repaired as we are having a new kitchen but the fire thing is scaring the beejeezus out of me.
Might try aquafunf's tip until we get a new one.
