LinzerTorte · 30/04/2011 07:23

Welcome to the May edition of the Fledgling Flyers' thread. Thank you to Nettie for her splendid leadership of last month's thread.

If you're living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome), this is the thread for you! We follow the tips on the FlyLady website in an attempt to restore order to our homes, but advise against signing up for the e-mails; all the information you need is on this thread.

Each day, I'll be posting the links that will enable you to do any of the following:

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat babysteps and do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More information about the babysteps is here.

So please join us - there's always plenty of chat, tea, cake, encouragement and the occasional Wine to help us on our way!

Hi all (and big hi to starbear)

Haven't done much except go to work and hang out laundry. Dh is fetching the kids so I have a quiet 1/2 hr Grin.

swan LOL at your advice. I am hopeless with friends who have new babies and have to physically restrain myself Blush.

linzer LOL at finding your book in your shopping.

toffee Grr at tesco!

feetheart sympathies for all that laundry. DD is just 6 and has only just cracked the night time weeing.

Going to have a Brew and a read before they all get home.

janeyjampot · 06/05/2011 16:59

Spent a long and satisfying time decluttering a bookcase on the landing. I am deciding to count this as 'work in my focus zone' and conclude that I am not behind, to use the FLYlady terminology. We've got one of those IKEA bookcases that you can get doors for - the doors make it look really tidy, but the trouble is that we just stuff everything that doesn't have a home behind them, so the books are interspersed with phone chargers, ornaments nobody likes, and (bizarrely) boxes for iPods, of which I found 5... Confused

Anyway, I now have a bag of assorted chargers, leads and boxes for technology we may or may not own (for DH to look through later); a box of my mother's books to be returned; a box of books to swap with a friend, and some empty space for new books Grin. Oh, and some tidy bookshelves. And a lot of dust wrapped safely in a duster...

Today would have been more productive work-wise had I not had to go and collect DD2 from school, as she was poorly. They were hardly ever sick in primary, so it didn't seem an issue to be concerned about when taking the decision to send them to school 20 miles away. Now, however, they're ill all the time. I've been wondering if it's because they are 20 miles away - they're exposed to a whole new set of germs! Anyway, that was an hour and a half wasted.

Still have the ironing (which is minimal - there was only one load of washing to do today) and the dinner to do, and probably a quick run around with the hoover. Otherwise things feel relatively under control. I do think Flylady has made a big difference to how I feel about my house, and even my life in general. It really feels worthwhile sometimes.

Hope everyone else has had good days, and that we get some nice weather for the weekend.

LadyInPink · 06/05/2011 17:56

Update on my list:

School run done DD has school photo today
1st load of washing hung out done
2nd load in done hung, dry and waiting in ironing pile
Hours work in office done
Meet school mums for coffee done
Pick up drycleaning done
Go shopping with DH so he can buy me something pretty for my birthday tomorrow done (lovely underwear)
Last few bulbs to put in garden (keep finding more planting to do arggh) still not done
Clear out handbag (should do this weekly as always full of crap) still not done
Do a burial with DD as her last stick insect has died done Sad
Take DD to Rainbows and pay for this term plus trip she is going on next month done
Watered garden done

Am going to do an easy tea tonight and make a chicken salad with the rest of yesterdays roast chicken (had chicken and salad sandwiches for lunch)

Really hope the weather is dry tomorrow (cos it's my birthday) and we want to be out and doing what we had planned. A lie in being the first plan Grin

Sad your DD is poorly janeyjampot - hope she recovers quickly and you spend the whole weekend being a nurse!

Catch up again soon though most likely Monday now Smile

LadyInPink · 06/05/2011 17:57

Arghhh don't spend the weekend being a nurse!

MissCinders · 06/05/2011 19:18

Keels over in a quiet corner ...

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

LinzerTorte · 06/05/2011 20:23

The DC are finally quiet, but it took ages to settle them this evening. DS has a friend here (and they're both sleeping in DS's new Mickey Mouse tent underneath his bed) and everyone was ridiculously overexcited for some reason. I just hope they sleep in tomorrow.

DH has just informed me that his next phone is going to be an iPhone, as it's now standard issue where he works. His current phone is on its last legs so it looks like it will be sooner rather than later. It's so unfair - I have to wait another five months before I'm even allowed to ask for one for my birthday. Envy

So what has everyone been up to today?

Cinders had her DH at home. DHs at home during the week should not be allowed, I feel ? mine just gets in the way of everything I want to do. She then keeled over (could this be related?).

DWM dashed through with a coffee.

ellie had to do the school run herself thanks to the cheek of her CM and MIL and was looking forward to a meal at a country pub. Envy

Janey has a poorly DD and decluttered the bookcase on her landing (landing and hall are the same word in [Austrian] German, so it definitely counts as this week?s zone Grin).

swan had researched rainforests in a last-minute rush (there are times when I?m glad that the Austrian primary school system doesn?t seem to involve any creative thinking), is worried she may be turning into a MIL and had to brave Morrison?s. Going to Morrison?s is a real treat when I?m at my parents?. Hmm

Lady met some friends for coffee (which seemed to be a recurring theme on the thread this morning), buried a pet stick insect and is planning to start celebrating her birthday with a lie-in tomorrow.

Toffee has been understandably annoyed by Tesco?s website crashing and is putting out her dining room hotspots in preparation for her DS?s teacher's visit.

bobbinogs has taken all her junk to the tip and has been reading more than MNing (reading is my fair-weather activity when I can sit outside in the sunshine ? although I often end up taking my laptop out into the garden too Blush).

candleshoe marked her spot ? yes, you do want to do it! Just start with the babysteps (you can go back to the beginning, or just jump in where we are - shining your sink and putting out a hotspot are the only important babysteps you've missed IMO), and it won't seem too overwhelming.

starbear popped in to say hello to swan ? and would be very welcome to join the thread too. Smile

Blue somehow found herself on MN (I can never work out quite how that happens, either ? or why what feels like a few minutes has suddenly become half an hour).

feetheart has been putting together a plan for dealing with her SIL and has washed and worked.

scatty has also been washing and working, and enjoyed a Brew in peace (not to be underestimated).

Apologies if I've missed anyone, but my brain is starting to shut down for the day. I'll be back in the morning with the babysteps.

LadyInPink · 06/05/2011 21:24

Lovely round up Linzer - i love reading the round ups as get a brief but concise synopsis of what everyone has done that day Smile

Swan my DD is doing rainforests at the moment too but she is in yr2 so prob not in so much detail as your DD!

Night night Smile

droitwichmummy · 06/05/2011 22:31

.... and relax Smile. This is the first time I have stopped today and I still have DS to get to bed as he was out with me this evening (I am an official for some sports events on Friday evenings in the summer). Fantastic thunderstorm as we left - loads of lightening, thunder then a downpour which made driving interesting. I took it as an excuse to use normal roads instead of the motorway.
Think DS has nearly finished his crumpets & milk - time for him to be in bed (might get a lie-in tomorrowGrin)
See you in the morning

BlueEyeshadow · 06/05/2011 22:40

We could do with a downpour DWM (although not while driving, I agree!) - the garden is parched already!

I'm supposed to be out at a church thing tomorrow morning, and then cooking for friends coming to lunch on Sunday once I get back, so probably not much flying, or family fun either! Hopefully DH won't be entirely exasperated with the boys by the end of the day...

Toffeefudgecake · 07/05/2011 00:15

Triumph: I emailed Tesco this morning to complain about losing my order. This afternoon, they actually took the trouble to phone me to apologise and have sent me an e-voucher for £6 to cover my next delivery charge! Shock

Am just enjoying a quiet few minutes on MN whilst the house is quiet. Managed to do the main things on my list today, although I still haven't managed the dining-room hotspots.

I have started to wonder if we have moths. How can you tell? I just keep finding small moths fluttering around the house - I've never noticed them before. Anyone got any recommendations for moth repellents?

Have a busy and sociable weekend coming up, so not sure if I'll get onto MN. DS2 is very happy that he will finally be allowed out this weekend and is going to not one, but two parties. He is very scabby, but the spots have definitely all healed now.

Linzer - Thanks for your round up. The 'precious new member' reference is on page one of Flylady's babysteps. It sounds a bit 'Carry On....' out of context, I now realise! Blush

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

LinzerTorte · 07/05/2011 05:32

Morning all,

Today?s babystep is to pick out your clothes for the next day. I must admit I don?t always do this for myself but I find it invaluable for the DC, especially on weekday mornings when time is of the essence.

There?s no mission today as it?s the weekend. Today is Family Fun Day; there are some ideas here. I like the idea of a bookstore/coffee shop veg out, but unfortunately there?s no such combination where we live. I?m also intrigued by what a Family Crop is; an American friend of mine mentioned going to one on Facebook yesterday too, but Google wasn?t much help.

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 07/05/2011 05:46

Thanks for explaining about "precious new member" Toffee - your Carry On reference made me laugh! Good news on Tesco; I hope the voucher goes some way towards making up for all your frustration over the lost order.

Hope you get your lie-in this morning DWM, and you too Lady - happy birthday! Smile

No lie-in here - DS and his friend were up well before 6 am, and then went into the girls' bedroom and woke up DD1 while I was posting the links.

No Family Fun planned here as yet, but it looks like it's going to be a nice sunny day. Will have to have a think about whether to go out somewhere, although we'll need to be back by mid-afternoon as the girls have been invited to a friend's, where they'll also be staying overnight.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend full of family fun. Grin

PositiveAttitude · 07/05/2011 07:21

Good morning everyone. Smile

I didn't quite make it on here yesterday, sorry!

Today is going to be a weird day.
DH is heading off to the mainland later this afternoon for a cycle race tomorrow.
DD2 has a fundraising event for her gap year tonight. Its a variety show at the church. I have been roped in to do the catering - surprise surprise, so a day of baking, making, cooking and chopping for me. Slightly concerned that DD has told me very little about the "sketch" that her and her friend are doing for the show, they have shown DS, DD2, DD4, but have refused to let me see it. DS keeps hinting that I might be portrayed in it in some way or another! Hmm Maybe I will stay hidden in the kitchen.
So not much flying going to be done today, as I expect I will end up making far more mess than I am clearing up. Blush
Nothing arrived from the postman yesterday, so I think I am now in the clear. Wink

Have a good weekend everyone. Waves to everyone, going to scroll up and read through what everyone is up to now......

ApuskiDusky · 07/05/2011 09:00

Morning! Quickly popping on to post my list, in the hope that it will inspire me to actually start on it!

Shine sink
Dishwasher on
Put away big pile of yesterday's laundry
Today's hotspot is the desk - where I face the dilemma of choosing which of ds1's many pieces of art I'm going to keep and how I can sneak some out for recycling
Send back plug-in laptop cooler that arrived this morning and DOES NOT WORK (grr)

And I was going to put up our new tent in the garden to check that we have all the bits (and work out how it goes up), but it's absolutely chucking it down at the moment. I might have to do some gardening tomorrow now that the soil isn't rockhard.

Happy birthday Lady!

droitwichmummy · 07/05/2011 09:02

Good morning. No sun here this morning Linzer still a bit rainy so am debating whether DS and I will be walking to swimming in the rain or calling a taxi (DH has gone to work).
M list will depend on the weather a bit today so I think I will do one for the weekend

get DS to try on football boots
get mince out of freezer & something for lunch tomorrow
swimming (remember clothes!)
shoe shopping for DS
blue wool for FILs jumper
get another cooling rack from the £1 shop (got one on Wednesday and its fab!)
ironing
cooking for freezer: bolognese, cottage pie, meatballs, pasta sauce
make stock
re-pot nastutiums and anything else that has suddenly grown
find somewhere to move the onions to so the DH can start digging his pond
get more compost & possibly something to kill off brambles
I'm sure there should be more - might do a couple of hotspots in the dining room

Happy birthday Lady hope you got your lie-in

BBL

swanriver · 07/05/2011 12:06

done
Communion class
Morrisons for Sunday lunch ingredients. I spent £60 on enough food for our guests (which makes 14 people) including a roast Shock I don't think I am going to manage the £50 challenge somehow... I suppose there were a few exotics in there like Brie, but nothing readymade or fancy, and that didn't even include wine (which we have plenty of already)

last night I managed to weed and sweep front garden thoroughly

ds2 woke us at 6.30am. Not good. We sent him away, but I feel very bleary still. Dh is at Music/football with kids, so I suppose I should put the shopping away now.

Hello all! Enjoy the broody balminess, summery rock music pounding in the distance here, some sort of Anzac Festival opposite till late Shock

PA I suspect they will show you a version of yourself with ten arms each holding a different implement, a magic porridge pot, and a heart of gold.

elliepac · 07/05/2011 12:06

Morning all (just!). Had an absolutely lovely evening last night. We went to a lovely country pub and had a fabulous meal followed by drinks in the evening sunshine.

Been a busy bee this morning. I have:-

Done 3 loads of washing at MIL's
Hung washing out
Tidied downstairs
Cleaned downstairs
Town to pay money into bank
Picked DC's up

DH has now gone to do the food shop with DD and DS has a friend round so I am going to crack on with upstairs. DNiece is sleeping over tonight which isn't a problem in itself but given that you can't see the floor in DS's room at the moment, a problem presents itself and a task that will keep me occupied for most of the afternoon!

This is the first weekend in ages that we haven't got anything on and it's bliss just to be able to potter!

The rest of the list looks like this:-

Tidy upstairs
Clean bathroom
Clothes away
More washing
Tidy DS's room enough for DN to sleep!
Dinner
Schoolwork in front of tv tonight.

lady Happy Birthday!

dwm it's just started raining here too Sad. I hope you went for taxi option Grin

apuski I place DC's art on a noticeboard in the kitchen. When they are not looking I recycle it Grin. I do keep the odd piece for posterity but when DD presents a picture that is one red line on I think it may be superfluous to requirements Grin

pa nice to see you staying out the kitchen for once Wink.

Anyway had better go. It is now afternoon and my allotted teabreak is nearly up.

Back Later!

Makingchanges · 07/05/2011 12:59

Afternoon all

Sorry I was missing at the end of the week - Got assessed by uni, more planning etc etc and just didn't manage much me time. Uni tutor visit was yesterday and it went fantastic, really pleased with my teaching and work etc so very pleased. I haven't been to bed before midnight any night this week and been up at 6 so DH let me miss DD's dance class this morning and I slept in till past 11am Shock DD alos brought me back newspapers and chocolates which she insisted on buying to DH so I must seem stressed to them.

Anyway after a lovely morning, DD has gone across road to friends, no doubt they will all be back here later and DH has gone to play cricket so I have the house to myself. Jobs today

  • Planning for week of literacy lessons
  • Make resources for numeracy lessons
  • Mark science books
  • 3 x washing (First load in now)
  • Do online shop
  • Find library books that are seriously overdue of DDs and take back
  • Tidy understairs paperwork pile
  • Hoover lounge
  • Sort out pile of uni, shopping. gym, swimming, ballet and school bags under stairs Hmm
  • Try to locate book needed for school this week
  • 2 job applications
  • Whats for tea Hmm Think it might be a freezer job

Haven't really managed to catch up much other than a quick skim read but glad to see Starbear popped in and am in awe of Swan and PA at entertaining so many people. I have a meltdown if i have a couple extra.

Right if I get my planning and marking done today I am giving myself a family day tomorrow so better get on

BBL

Stillchuckingit · 07/05/2011 13:03

Not Camus but a quotatiotn from Amelia Earhart just for Droitwich (with apologies to PA Grin)

"FLYING may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price."

Boring but appropriate!

Sorry such a short message.

Screeen still juddery. Have had no time to change from Internet Explorer to another browser yet. Knee deep in first Holy Communion prep..

Toffee: cedar usual moth repellent but swear by this James Wong recipe (scroll down)

here

Huge waves to all!

bobbinogs · 07/05/2011 13:16

I'm liking the Camus. My kindle broke so I'm back ! They're sending me another one I'd only had it 48 hours !

Decluttering is working wonders, I'm amazed at how much I've done, how long have I been doing this ? So next week I'm decluttering the front room. Have already put a sofa on freecycle and it's being picked up tomorrow so we can get a big desk and have somewhere to work that isn't the kitchen table....my main hotspot....dh has a book commision and needs somewhere to work. I think he's aware of the miracles I'm performing as he's offered to make tea tonight....

keep dry this weekend ladies... I'm off to a Sheep Festival in a minute...don't ask....the joys of rural life....

PositiveAttitude · 07/05/2011 13:50

Lovely thought Swan, but i fear not. Will update tomorrow. Catering epic is well underway. All on track and time for a little relax before waving DH off on the boat.

Bobbinogs - Your Kindle broke Shock I love mine! No good for keeping the house tidy though! Blush

LinzerTorte · 07/05/2011 18:18

I may not have a Kindle, but find books distracting enough - have spent too much time reading and not enough flying today. I feel less guilty about reading than I do about MNing when DH is around, though (especially as I feel like I'm keeping him company when I read outside while he's gardening).

I was also hoping to be able to potter today ellie, but we've spent more time out than I'd hoped. We took my bike to the repair shop this morning; the man there didn't seem too hopeful and thinks I may need a new back wheel - in which case he recommended buying a new bike - but they're going to let us know. After a trip to the stationery shop to get DD1 some things for school, we then went for coffee (DH and I) and ice cream (the DDs).

After yet another barbecue at lunchtime (DH insists on having a BBQ as soon as the sun comes out), we dropped the DDs off at their friends' house, went for yet another coffee/ice cream and then had a short visit to the playground - short because DS fell over and cut his forehead. There was lots of blood but it looked worse than it is, although he's been very clingy since. He cheered up slightly when I agreed to open his Mother's Day present a day early (a muesli bowl that he'd made at kindergarten, with homemade muesli in it) and I made him his favourite tea (pancakes), but he's still feeling rather sorry for himself.

Hope everyone has had a good day; I'll be back a bit later to do the round-up.

keels over in a corner again

early starting days

yawn
ds up before six

dh left for work by seven

Id made lunch by seven thirty....Confused

BlueEyeshadow · 07/05/2011 19:28

Well the church meeting was better than expected - reasonably fun and reasonably useful! - and I've got the cooking done for tomorrow. The boys seemed more than usually nerve jangling today, but perhaps it was the humidity getting to us all. I really hope it rains soon! I can't believe I'm saying that in May.

I've also managed to get today's laundry put away which is something of an achievement - doesn't usually happen until the next morning.

I like the sound of all that coffee and icecream, Linzer. Heads always bleed very profusely don't they? Hope DS is better now.

Happy Birthday *Lady& - hope you've had a good day so far and enjoy the rest of it! Wine

Yay for DH making tea bobbinogs

Apuski and ellie - aargh! DS1's artwork is a major source of clutter here too. I've got a folder for posterity, and more on the fridge, but I hate throwing paper away and am never sure if thick crusts of glitter and/or paint are suitable for recycling! Confused

Waves to everyone and hands round more Wine.

scattyspice · 07/05/2011 19:47

We had rain this aft blue and it did feel quite good Hmm.
Hope ds is ok now linzer blood gives them quite a shock I think (they consider themselves indestructable).

Usual day of swimming lessons and ballet class. DD did really well at swimming today, less hysterical crying and more actual swimming Smile(I had warned her that she needed to panic quietly if she was to be allowed back).

No plans for tomorrow as yet Hmm.
