Home education beginner in Birmingham - looking for groups.

As it says really! I've spent hours trawling the web for groups, have found one yahoo group which I've requested to join and that is about it for web activity! There is a website that hasn't been updated in a few months and I'm not sure what that means...

DS1 is turning 3 at the end of September so I'm looking for pre-school groups mostly - to build links for when he is infant school and to get to know other home-edding mums.

Realistically he'll be going to nursery for 3 half days a week (if I can find one that will allow such a radical option!) from December for a while, as DC3 is due between Christmas and New Year and I think I'll need some practical support with 3 under 3.5! I don't have any family nearby and can't see any other way to be practical about the chaos and stay sane.

Can anyone help me find an active group, or individuals in my area?

Have you joined the facebook groups? You could start with the mumsnet one but there are lots more, including one for most localities.

I've been trying to search for them too! I just noticed the thread on here about a fb group so I'll start there and hope for better luck than with the fb search tool which came up with absolutely nothing!

I am an admin for the yahoo email support group which covers the whole of the West Mids and is used by most home ed families in Birmingham. I also know the email address for the editor of the newsletter too.
I'm on my phone right now, but once I get back on the pc tomorrow, I'll pm you and send you all the details.
I also talk to the LA a lot on behalf of home educators in Birmingham, and work with them to improve their relationships with HE families and their families. I will get back to you tomorrow I promise.

Hi Julie - I think we might have achieved first contact! I got added to the fb and HELM groups so I think I might have seen you on there. Thanks so much for your help.

It's good to see there is so much around, though it seems like a bit more towards the Black Country. Is the Central Library monthly meeting still happening?

Hi :)

I've got a 4 year old DS and an 18 mo DD and we are considering home educating. I have applied for primary schools for him, but we are very much exploring all options at the moment. Our main concern is that we would be isolated as I don't have the car during the week, and we really love spending time with other people!

If you would like to meet up for a play date then that would be great - would be nice to chat with some other folks who are exploring home-ed too.

We are in Stirchley. I am on HELM but haven't posted much - it does seem like most things are pretty far for us to travel to.

Joyful, our DC are similar ages! I also don't have a car (on any day) but we walk and get buses and trains around. DD is now 4.5 and DS 21 months nearly. Do you live within walking distance of Kings Heath, as we're there a lot? It's hard to know what to do in the winter isn't it though- so easy to hang out in a park in summer.

Hi, no I didn't get the PM. Still be good to meet up though. Do you ever go swimming at Cocks Moors / Moseley Baths (the latter having loads of free sessions)? Or there's the Baptist Church Cafe on Kings Heath high St, which is very chilled.

No, I've not yet braved swimming with my two on my own! But the cafe sounds good - I'll find out when I have next got the car. Could you send me a pm as I tried to send you one again...not sure what I'm doing wrong!

Hi. :-) Kind of hijacking this thread but I've literally just deregistered my daughters from school (4 and 5 years old). It would be brilliant if we could find a group to socialise with and share home ed ideas.
We live in the city centre. I don't drive but our location means local transport is accessible.
I'm a lone parent and also worry about isolation.

I am also in Birmingham - Rednal/Frankley way. I have also just deregistered my DD who is 5 ( 2 weeks ago) and would love to meet up with people in a similar situation!

I have seen lots of organized groups and activities around, both here on on HELM - but none seem to be in Birmingham. Have I missed them? If not, there seem to be a few of in this thread so could we arrange something between us I wonder?

Yes, arrange something and put it on HELM for folks to join you.
When we were actively home educating there was a regular monthly meeting at the Library, and regular meet ups at the Museum and Art Gallery-so both of those places would be good places to start with...and also we've done visits to the jewellery quarter, and the back to back houses as well.

And the Lickey Hills has a visitors centre that was HE friendly, we've used a room there for meetings before now, and met regularly for walks and fun in the playground.

We are home schooling, and I was wondering if anyone on here would be interested in meeting up for trips/play/coffee. I have also joined the FB group, hoping to meet a lot of nice people :)
