Double bed for 10 year-old?

DS about to turn 10. His room needs a refresh and it occurs to me that he’d love a double bed (he’s always lounging in ours when he gets the chance). Is that ridiculous? I had a single bed right till I left home at 18 and all the way through University, but my niece got a double when she was 15 and it seems to be quite common for teens these days.

But it’s only 6 years since we were upgrading him from cot bed to single!

We are fortunate to have plenty of space for double, wardrobe and desk when he is older and needs to study. He doesn’t really play in his bedroom as he has a separate playroom/den and he’s asked for his bedroom to be painted darker help him sleep. When he has sleepovers he and his friends decamp to our guest room as it has a double bed and a sofa bed.

My 9 year old has asked for a double bed for her next birthday. We’ve decided to get her one.

If you have the space and can afford it you might as well just get a double bed once and for all.

I don't see why it would be ridiculous.

I was the same at home and university! But I think now it is usual for teens to have a double if space permits. Also is there is room either side, it makes the room look much more balanced.
I know a few people who got a double as a first bed. It makes it easier if people need to swap beds in the night or co sleep

I remember in all the American teen shows as a 90s tween and teen that they ALL had double beds!

My DS has had a double since 10. He’s now 5’11 at 13. Definitely worth it.

If you have the space why not. Or even a small double. I’d also get a storage one (good quality lift up) as my now adult DC uses it to store gym equipment and their shoes etc.

Small double here. If rooms were bigger I would have got double.

We got a small double ottoman storage bed for DD when she was 9 and we did her room up. We often all jump in and have a chat when she’s going to bed. The storage element has been great for all the toys she isn’t quite ready to let go of yet but rarely plays with.

My 7yo has a double. I didnt think this was unusual, most of his cousins also have doubles. If you have the space, I dont see why not.

I had a single bed till I was 17 and I only got a double because I left home. I think a double is great if you’ve got the space, I wouldn’t be against giving a kid a double even a younger kid tbh. It’s not an age restricted item.

Might as well. We got DS one when he needed a new bed at 14/15. I thought it was a bit ridiculous at first then realised what was ridiculous was buying a single bed for a nearly 6 foot young man when we had room for a double.

My kids are 14, 10 and 7
My older 2 both have small doubles (queen beds as they used to be called, but I have double bedding for them) - my dd10 quite recently when we decorated her room at Easter and my youngest has a single cabin bed with a desk under etc…. but likes the floor space at the moment for toys etc…
we are lucky because it is an older house that all the bedrooms have room for double beds and this was a consideration when we bought the house - a lot of new builds have very small bedrooms that this wouldn’t be possible in. The new 4 beds seem to have a giant master bedroom with big en-suite and dressing room, a big guest room then a single room and a box room as the 4th bedroom which is fine if you’d want it as a home office but not really big enough for a bedroom.

My two year old had a double floor bed and has done since he was 18 months. I got it so I could co sleep when he wasn’t sleeping well but I can’t imagine we will ever change him to a single.

My kids have had doubles since they moved out of their cot/toddler beds. It’s more comfortable for them, easier when friends sleep over, when lots of family stay e.g. xmas we have the option of them taking one of the DCs’ rooms whilst they bunk up together in the other, it’s future proof into the teen years and if they get sick or the washing machine breaks or something all the bedding between the kids rooms and the spare is interchangeable. If you’re refreshing the room anyway, have the budget for a new bed, it fits and it’s what he wants then I don’t see why you wouldn’t.

I wouldn’t be buying a new bed unless needed, but if needed then a double bed would be fine if that’s what he wants.

My DS has had a double bed since he was 10 months old 🤣 Easy for those hard baby/toddler years, and he loves it now he's 5.

My 2 year old is in a small double, as we don't have a spare room and my parents sleep in there when they come to visit. I'd imagine that my 5 year old will ask for one as well when she catches on that a double is an upgrade from her single. Their bedrooms are massive so they've still got loads of room to play in there and it really helps if we have nights playing musical beds!

My grandson is 9 and my daughter has just bought him a small double , he loves it .

We got a double for our DS when he was 7 on the understanding he’d sleep on his DBs floor if older family ever needed it for a night. He was content and he’s only ever needed to give it up for one night.

Same here my ds went straight from cot to a double ottoman and will do the same for the baby. But I also had a double bed as a child so maybe that’s why I didn’t ever really think they needed a single first

My 10 year old has had a small double for a year. Did her room up which needs to last a few years and thought it pointless to get a new single when a double would be more sensible.

My 4 year old has a double. 😂
Granted it's because his room doubles as the spare, when occasional grandparents stay he goes in the bottom bunk in his sister's room. He loves his massive bed though.

I love the practicality of a lift- up ottoman bed. My DS would probably mess around with it though. Does anyone think it might be a safety risk or am I worrying too much?

With a decent mattress there’s probably no way a 4YO could come close to lifting it. You could also just not tell him about it and change the sheets, presuming it’s spare bedding etc you’d keep in there, when he’s at school. Go for storage drawers instead though if you’re worried?
