Double bed for 10 year-old?

DS about to turn 10. His room needs a refresh and it occurs to me that he’d love a double bed (he’s always lounging in ours when he gets the chance). Is that ridiculous? I had a single bed right till I left home at 18 and all the way through University, but my niece got a double when she was 15 and it seems to be quite common for teens these days.

But it’s only 6 years since we were upgrading him from cot bed to single!

We are fortunate to have plenty of space for double, wardrobe and desk when he is older and needs to study. He doesn’t really play in his bedroom as he has a separate playroom/den and he’s asked for his bedroom to be painted darker help him sleep. When he has sleepovers he and his friends decamp to our guest room as it has a double bed and a sofa bed.

When DH and I moved in together, we had 3 king sized (US queen) beds so when the DDs moved out of cots, they moved onto king beds.
On holiday and in other places, they have slept in singles and been fine. DD1's first university accommodation had a single but her 2nd year one has a double.

I love my son’s for lying in bed reading together and good cuddles.

He’s 10 not 4. And when he’s at school I’m at work!

DH reckons he’s old enough to heed warnings not to try to hide in it or anything.

I worried about the hydraulic element before getting DS (4) his bed. But to be honest, both kids forgot about it pretty quickly. I lifted it up yesterday to get some bedding out and DD (8) was briefly interested, she had a go at lifting it then forgot about it again immediately. I keep towels and bedding in there. Unless you're keeping his Lego or something interesting in there I doubt he'll be particularly interested in it.

Only 6 years to go before he'll be wanting his GF over so if you have the room, why not. Also future proofing for a guest bed if he heads off to Uni.

I would genuinely suggest a KS if you have room. Honestly, both my boys were over 6ft by 15 and liked the extra space. In addition, if you are thinking about investing in a long term solution, then once they get to uni, start bringing partners home, etc then a KS makes far more sense than cramming a couple into a double bed.

(I'm a long term sort of thinker, however. I agree it's not necessary at 9 to be considering 'future partners') 😂

Ha ha. The tallest man in any generation of family either side is 5’10” so we don’t have to worry about DS shooting up that much either!

Double bed with a king size duvet = maximum comfort (especially for boys as generally longer legs…)
