What’s a good colour for living room and hall if you want to paint it all the same colour? I would’ve gone for a Grey tones but I’m told that they’re finished.!

Portland Stone is aa good shout (Little Greene) or Skimming Stone (F&B) or Egyptian Cotton (Dulux).

The more beige tone neutrals are replacing the greys

Can’t go wrong with Egyptian cotton

Timeless

Is there a way of leaving grey but not heading towards those ubiquitous ‘Magnolia’ tones?

Have a look at
Dulux natural calico
Dulux natural hessian
Dulux mellow mocha

I have natural calico in my lounge and the hall/stairs/landing. It’s a warm neutral.

Ive got Skimming Stone (F&B) upstairs and Egyptian Cotton (Dulux) downstairs. They're very similar. I love Egyptian cotton.

Dulux Natural calico is creamy, natural hessian is beige, both good.

Paint and paper library- Canvas 1 is my go to

cherrymauve · 11/03/2026 20:39

We have Dimity by F&B. Love its depth.

Marylou2 · 11/03/2026 20:54

I love Skimming Stone and Elephant's Breath for a bit more depth. Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee a safe bet too.

I have Lick white 06 - an off white with an undertone of pink. Love it!

embolass · 11/03/2026 21:28

As previous, Egyptian cotton is lovely. Have it in hall, staircase and upstairs hall. It’s a perfect neutral classy shade

Dead Salmon by Farrow & Ball.

HermioneWeasley · 11/03/2026 21:43

We’ve got walnut something by Dulux which is a warm neutral but not yellow/cream, it’s v slightly pink

Georgiepud · 11/03/2026 21:50

Farrow and Ball Dimpse
Or Antique white.

I never understood the grey everywhere fad. I mean we live with grey (clouds, rain or both) half the year as it is. Why have it indoors as well! Natural hessian is nice.

Dulux summer linen

ThatInbetweenBigCoatAndJacketWeather · 11/03/2026 22:23

Skimming stone (dupe!)

I'm in love with Wickes Chalk White.
The durable finish paint is fantastic quality.

Sprawling · 11/03/2026 22:26

F and B Dropcloth.

I've had Natural Hessian for about 15 years now and haven't had to redo it😄
Had Barley White for about 25 years before that but I don't know if they still do that.
It's all Anaglypta muted patterns so probably back in fashion.
Always silk finish for light reflection. Hate matt finishes.

Blessedbethefruitloopss · 11/03/2026 22:38

The house we’ve moved to had Egyptian Cotton, and it looked quite yellow, must be how the light comes in. We’ve switched to Cancun by B&Q after trying probably 30 different samples, to find the right colour.

@Onmytod24 I've wasted many weeks in the past and spent a fortune on f**king F&B tester pots, and other posh paints. Which never look anything like the colour on the paint chart.

My advice is get the Dulux Heritage fandeck. https://www.duluxheritage.co.uk/en/products/details/dulux-heritage-fandeck

It's wonderful. You don't have to buy testers, because the colours are exactly the same as on the fandeck.

Last year I did a bedroom, hall and stairs in Green Marl (very very subtle green). Did other rooms in Alabaster White, a very safe warm off -white. All the colours are safe, actually, that is the beauty of Dulux Heritage.

For what its worth - Little Greene is much better than F and B and I used to be a F and B devotee

I have mellow mocha in a bedroom and its always looked faintly violet in colour there, nirth facing room, maybe that makes a difference. I like it but it's not the colour I expected
