Why am I ripping my hair out trying to buy a new sofa!

Honestly this is ridiculous. Ive been to DFS, Sofology, Furniture village plus googled for hours online.

We have a "temporary" corner sofa (thats been temporary for 4 years now!) We picked up cheaply so I have 0 attachment to that.

We are looking at a 3 and a 2 with mayve a chair. Budget about £2.5k. Not leather. Not too deep as DP is short and "doesnt want his legs swinning in the air" 😆

Ive sat on so many sofas recently all quite fine but I just cannot choose one! What's wrong with me!

Cream or grey. Doesnt need to be fancy. Not hugely fussed on fabric. Memory foam if possible but not a deal breaker.

Any recommendations before i waste anymore of my life looking at the same sofas....

Is there anywhere near you that is a smaller family firm or that makes bespoke sofas? Might be worth a look or travelling.
We had a bespoke chaise sofa made for our caravan. Chose the size style material and colour. Loved that sofa! Cost about 1/3 of the one at home and was much comfier. Sold the caravan last year, miss that sofa!
We have sofas and chairs on order for our new home ( downsized) from an independent retailer locally.
Have you looked at recliners to prevent your partner’s legs swinging? Good luck.

we bought ours in a local furniture showroom. but we wouldn't have got both a 3 seater and 2 seater and a chair for £2.5k.

i sympathise. buying sofas is such a commitment! I'd keep trying them out until one suits.

AlexisP90 · 05/11/2025 13:10

Thanks guys. It really is a process!

Going to have a look in a few more shops this weekend.. hopefully we nail it.

Its not that the ones we have seen have been bad... its just... yeah haha

My recommendation is a company called the lounge co. They only sell through smaller retailers - have a google. My sofas are 8 years old and look almost new with 2 small children. I am so impressed with them. The aqua clean fabric is also incredible

labradorservant · 05/11/2025 13:28

Second lounge co. Tried everywhere and found my sofa there. Arlo and Jacob is also worth a look!

Snowfairyxx · 05/11/2025 13:31

Have a look at Alston's sofas. We looked at them and order through a local furniture shop but they have a website and you can order fabric samples. They are good quality and not a bad price. We got a large sofa, a large snuggle chair and a storage footrest for about 2.5k. Could have gone for a cheaper fabric if we wanted to as well. They do loads of different styles and colours.

Contact Morii Designs they’ll be happy to help you with an affordable bespoke sofa x

We got our current sofas from Next 7 years ago and still in really good condition.

gardeninggirl14 · 05/11/2025 19:37

I dont have any suggestions but I would say that i hate my Next sofa with a vengeance so whatever you do, avoid Next! It's incredibly uncomfortable and the cushions are not properly filled so it looks empty and saggy. They sent three sets of replacement cushions, all inadequately filled, and then I just didnt have the bandwidth to keep pushing it. Terrible purchase! I hear they have gone downhill a lot so maybe its a supplier issue as I had one a while ago and had no issues.

Look on Pinterest and insta for some ideas!

I bought ours from the Lounge Company amd honestly they are the shittest thing in my house. Incredibly uncomfortable and incredibly badly made. Look like shit minutes after plumping. Came with feather cushions despite me triple checking no feathers and wouldn't take them back because of lock down. Im astounded people are recommending them. I cant wait to get rid of them.

Lauralou19 · 05/11/2025 20:08

Had our last sofa and current sofa from NEXT and very happy with both of them. Last one we had for 10 years and only sold to change colour scheme. We do look after them very well (regularly turn cushions/hoover, no one eats on them) 😅and both have kept their shape (no squished looking cushions which I hate).

Whatwerewetalkingabout · 05/11/2025 20:09

I love my John Lewis sofa thats still going strong 10+ years later (although the cat has scratched the arms a bit!) My local JL has a huge furniture section on the basement level, so good for having a test run. Xx

AlexisP90 · 05/11/2025 20:13

Ill take a look all fo these suggestions - thank you!!

Gosh didnt think I would have such commitment issues over a sofa. DP has said yes ti about 15 we have seen im just so on the fence

The vintage sofa co is also worth a look.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 05/11/2025 21:21

The DFS Sophia is nice, we’ve had ours around 6 years now and we’re really happy with it.

banjaxxed · 05/11/2025 21:26

next sofas are ok but a bit boring imo.

ours is Alston, still British made and upholstered but more choice. You need a local, independent furniture company who stock a range from these suppliers who don’t have their own stores eg stores that stock g-plan, alstons, etc.

where are you in the country? It’s those independent, family run ones you want

That's what was recommended to us after pulling our hair out. Everything looked the same. We went to an independent I walked in saw a sofa, sat in it and fell in love. DH did the same with an ergonomic chair. We picked the fabric corduroy for a big sofa and deep armchair. Leather for DH chair.
Best of all it was made by a Welsh family firm.

I'm still thrilled with it. The hardest thing was not buying an Italian glass dining table and six beautiful chairs 😁

Sunshinedayscomeon · 06/11/2025 19:08

I found DFS sales assistant to be incredible with our requirements:
Not deep and able to touch the floor. The sofa we brought is very different to the sofa we had in mind. And we love it. I was so impressed with sales assitant and their knowledge of stock and what suited our requirements.

80smonster · 06/11/2025 19:20

Price is the issue, 2.5k doesn’t get you much for 2 sofas. The fabric will be muck and usually cheap sofas sag after a year or so.

justasking111 · 06/11/2025 19:32

Charity shops have some amazing furniture. Some like new. My neighbours bought two sofas and an armchair for £400. They were as new. So comfortable. We're in a retirement area so furniture is generally lightly used when changed. Market place on FB also good.

I've just moved, exactly the same issue, choosing house relatively easy.
I put furniture into storage, thought there wouldn't be room for my old sofa so gave it away. There would have been room.
I've been looking at swoon; they supply John Lewis for some sofas.
I'm naturally indecisive, and I've never previously bought a sofa online.
Have been unable to make choice for several weeks.......it is a huge commitment!
