Why am I ripping my hair out trying to buy a new sofa!

Honestly this is ridiculous. Ive been to DFS, Sofology, Furniture village plus googled for hours online.

We have a "temporary" corner sofa (thats been temporary for 4 years now!) We picked up cheaply so I have 0 attachment to that.

We are looking at a 3 and a 2 with mayve a chair. Budget about £2.5k. Not leather. Not too deep as DP is short and "doesnt want his legs swinning in the air" 😆

Ive sat on so many sofas recently all quite fine but I just cannot choose one! What's wrong with me!

Cream or grey. Doesnt need to be fancy. Not hugely fussed on fabric. Memory foam if possible but not a deal breaker.

Any recommendations before i waste anymore of my life looking at the same sofas....

My sofa came from IKEA. So simple.

I've just moved, exactly the same issue, choosing house relatively easy.
I put furniture into storage, thought there wouldn't be room for my old sofa so gave it away. There would have been room.
I've been looking at swoon; they supply John Lewis for some sofas.
I'm naturally indecisive, and I've never previously bought a sofa online.
Have been unable to make choice for several weeks.......it is a huge commitment!

Right?!?! Honestly I cant believe its been such a process!

To address a PP.. I realise £2.5k isnt a huge budget. Honestly.. we could afford more but we also have a 3 year old and are trying for another so while I have the money to extend that budget I dont actually think its wise.

Kids = vomit, poo and fluid i cant even identify so we comfortably said £2.5k in the thinking it probably wont last us 10 years

We moved 18 months ago and it's taken that long to find a sofa. Never had a new one, always secondhand, so was determined at nearly 70 years old to have a new one before I'm too old to appreciate it! This week, finally decided on a John Lewis Barbican corner sofa. Didn't realise how long and hard the process was so feel your pain op.

Isabelle70 · 06/11/2025 21:43

I tested some Westbridge Furniture sofas at my local independent store. I went for firm foam seat cushions and must have sat for about half an hour with cushions from the different sofas so I then had it built to what I really wanted. I then decided about 3 years after the sofa was delivered that I would like a footstool and they still had the same fabric available.

Ah...luckily I don't have to think of kids...or anyone else's....fluids.
You're sensible to play it safe till the kids are grown up.
I had just decided on a swoon, but pp's mention of vintage sofa co led me to their site, which features Tetron, who make 30's style sofas in real velvet. Not polyester, real velvet. Sigh. I want one of those now.......not the swoon. But it's £1000 more. Aaaarrgh.

I bought a sofa earlier this year from sofasofa after lots of recommendations from numbers, and I am very pleased with it. The customer service was excellent and the sofa is sturdy, comfortable and attractive.

defrazzled · 07/11/2025 16:25

I hated every sofa I saw for 3 years then bought an old Ercol one like my nan had and had cushions made. Then I got another and an arm chair. They're 20 years old for us now, and it was made in 1961 and looks great. We have had 4 sets of cushions. They look lovely and new cushions give it a whole new lease of life.

mummabubs · 07/11/2025 16:45

We are still waiting on our Next sofa that was ordered in early August. Just before it was due for delivery they informed us there was a two week delay
They now keep messaging last minute every time to say there's a further delay and we will be entitled to compensation after the sofa is eventually delivered. But that doesn't help me seat our guests coming from overseas in three weeks time when we will have one two seater sofa between nine of us.

Basically OP unless you're willing to wait a long time I'd avoid Next right now. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nitgel · 07/11/2025 16:56

Try john lewis ? We have a couple from there. Nest sofas they re fab and you can pick the colour.

mixedcereal · 07/11/2025 17:13

What kind of style are you after?
we have Ikea Ektorps which we LOVE, we bought them as a stop gap 7 years ago when we moved into our house and needed 2 x 3 seater and a 4 seater but our house is old and “country” style so they got really well and we always get compliments. The fact the covers are removeable has been priceless with a toddler and 2 dogs and now a recent baby.

one day I’d like a massive corner sofa but can’t bring myself to spend the money when the Ektorps are so good

Oh gosh! What an absolute pain the ass!! Thats awful. I really hope you get some decent compensation out of it. But yeah doesnt really help your situation now.

We originally wanted something before Christmas which when we started looking was possible.

Sadly its unlikely now... which is fine.. but certainly dont want a wait that long.

Ill have a look at all of these suggestions tomorrow when DP takes DS out for the morning. Hopefully we will get there in the end!

I recommend looking at outlet or ex display.

Bo concept have decently made furniture and if you can find a store nearby they'll likely have ex display items for sale.

Spottyskunk · 07/11/2025 19:26

For the first time ever I bought secondhand. A sofasofa one for £40 from my local BHF shop. I absolutely love it and at that price I could change it every year if I wanted to. I won't ever buy new again.

MaryGreenhill · 07/11/2025 19:32

We bought ours second hand from the Cancer charity shop during COVID and 5 years later it still going strong . Cost us £300.

Same! Also ordered ours in August and they’re now saying it won’t be delivered until after Xmas!
Really annoying when we purposefully ordered it in the summer thinking we’d left plenty of time.

Sunshineandrainbow · 07/11/2025 23:02

I feel your pain, I am going through the same... Those with lounge Co sofas which model have you got that you recommend please?

I'm so sorry you're in this position too, it's really frustrating isn't it. We thought the original 15 week quoted lead was quite long compared to other places anyway but it's getting silly now. Our fear is definitely that we're also going to end up with no sofa before having to host Christmas, which as you say is mad when you order in August. I hope yours comes asap and that the compensation they offer you is halfway decent for all this. We really like Next and were planning to order a sofabed from them next year but based on this experience we wouldn't order any furniture from them again.

Frank Knighton

DinoLil · 08/11/2025 10:06

Oh! Are you me?! I'm having the same dilemma but live on an island with just two furniture shops. Costs a small fortune to get to the mainland and then there's the delivery dilemma.

But, good luck!

GorillaGlue · 11/11/2025 12:58

I don’t have any recommendations as to a good company as I’m in the same boat but please avoid sofology like the plague!
Non existent customer service and horrifically rude/aggressive experience! They will also hold onto your money despite warranties etc!
