Expensive mattress mistake. Feel so stuck and stupid.

We bought a hybrid mattress from Dreams in January. Medium firm. DP really wanted something "soft and cozy" and of course now can't sleep on it because he sinks into it and it's giving him all kinds of back and neck issues, so he's in the spare room.

The bed is fine for me, but then again I weigh less.

Currently co-sleeping with 5 month old baby so it's not really an active issue, but I would like to share a bed with DP again at some point and eventually the spare room will become DS's.

We spent £1,700 on this mattress so we're both finding it really difficult to admit we need to get rid of the mattress and spend more money. DP keeps blaming the pillow, but we've tried 3 different ones at this point.

The bloody thing was supposed to be an investment because our previous IKEA mattress lasted 8 years! So the thinking was get something expensive good which will last 10/15+ years.

I have never spent that kind of money on a mattress, we have an extra firm sprung mattress we ordered online from a mattress shop, about £300 and it’s been brilliant and lasted 5 years so far. I’ve only ever been in mattress shops to try out the type I want and then go online to get something similar for a few hundred pounds.

I feel your pain. I bought an expensive Emma mattress and lived it for 2 years but then it started to sink and took years to admit we needed to change it.

Currently 3 months into a simba hybrid and I'm not sure. We might get another mattress on trial before this one runs out.

I'd never buy a mattress without a trial period again but it's still a pain to decide and return and try something else.

I feel your pain. We bought a mattress I absolutely hated and I put up with it for 10 years which we had been told was about how often to change them. Next time around I sent the salesman away as I knew exactly what I wanted and didn’t want. I love our new mattress. A good bed makes so much difference!

We bought a medium-soft for £1700 from dreams, returned within the 100 days as it sunk! Inspector said it’s because our slats were too wide, and would have been suited on divan like in shop. We exchanged for same mattress but firm, I like it as co sleep with baby so safer, partner feels it’s too hard.

I really rate our Ikea mattresses too. Have spent. Fortune on different brands and been disappointed

Well, this was supposed to be the mattress for 20 years or whatever! We had an ikea one for 8 years and tbh only upgraded because the bed frame fell apart and we wanted to go from a double to a king.

Honestly, I'm never going near foam anything again. Fuck the hybrids.

I can’t flip our mattress upside down as it is just hard board on one side with no padding.
Beware that is what mattress manufacturers are doing now.

Mattresses must be one of the most expensive yet most disappointing household purchases. It’s so hard after 5 minutes in a shop to know if it’ll be comfortable enough for 8 hours every single day. I bought into the hype of an Emma mattress, it was soo uncomfortable and I mourned my, my old, saggy IKEA one. My daughter wanted to change from a double to a single bed so I cut the Emma one in half with a saw and made it into a single for her. I’ve got her very cheap (it was supposed to be a stop gap mattress) spring coil mattress which isn’t very comfortable but much better than sleeping on a giant foam pad. My next mattress will be from Ikea (weirdly it auto capitalised Ikea the first time I wrote it but not the second or third. Weird).

Urgh, I had a memory foam one. I sweated through every night for two years before finally persuading dh to get rid of it. Never again.

I hated mine that had a foam topper too, so bloody hot. My current one is fine but I'll replace it fairly soon because I love the IKEA one on my son's bed.

Hi! Not bad at all here. I was worried about my back. I'm a side sleeper - you? But it was just fine and a joy to be "atop" the bed rather than in it. That said, we have a thick cotton mattress topper, so it's not the squishy kind, and then a mattress protector, so it wasn't just the bedsheet over the mattress. Ours is a simba and supposedly firm but was really like a marshmallow. I was more worried about sleeping closer to materials that weren't intended to be slept on, thought it might be hotter, but that was fine too.

I’ve always gone for a Sealy posturepedic mattress - you can get good deals online from mattressnextday or mattress online. I always go for one that you can turn over, as I think it prolongs the life of the mattress. We had a hugely expensive Hypnos mattress once that gave me backache and hip pain, because it wasn’t firm enough for us.

Has anyone tried the Harrison Spinks Platinum or Ruby?

I did exactly the same thing as you. Tried the bed in Dreams and it seemed so comfortable. Spent a fortune on it and hated it from day 1 because it is so lumpy and saggy. I just didn’t get round to exchanging it before the 100 days ran out as it was so much effort researching it. I’ve spent another £200 on a mattress topper but it’s made no difference.

in exactly the same situation. Sometimes I wonder if they actually give you the same mattress!

We bought a firm mattress that my dh hated.
We then got a softer topper from Ikea that solved the problem.
Maybe try a firm topper if you are outside the return window.

Really shocked by all the negative Emma mattress reviews. Have had ours for nearly 20 years and it’s ruined sleeping anywhere else for us as it’s so comfy.

If you've ever slept at a premier inn you can buy their mattresses cheaply and they are good value. I like vispring but they are expensive.

DP has suggested a firm topper too but I just can't wrap my head around how that's going to help when the issue is the mattress is too soft? The topper isn't going to help with the springs, is it?

Please correct me if I'm wrong! I just don't want to spend £100+ on something that's going to go to waste.

Our soft topper definitely made a difference (I know it’s the opposite way for you).
Go into Ikea and try a firm topper on a soft mattress, see if it helps.
