Deluxe Natural Hessian looks yellow! Pics

I decided on Natural Hessian as we have a large, dark living room and I wanted a beige with a blush/pink undertone to lighten it up.

However, I bought the tester for it and it looks really yellow on my walls, more like an buttermilk. Obviously the lighting etc but absolutely not what I wanted.

It’s the one on the right in the pic with 2. The other one was almond white which looks too cold for me. This wall is furthest from natural light. The blue wall is nearest the window.

Any recommendations on a beige with pink undertones that doesn’t look yellow?! I’m desperate now as we’re supposed to start painting the walls on Monday and I’m back to square one.

Have a look at Mellow Mocha.

MissyB1 · 12/04/2025 16:58

Well I have Natural Calico in my hallway and stairs, it doesn't have a pink undertone (or yellow), but it is a true warm pale beige. Will attach pic.

It will look much yellower next to the blue that is already on the walls. I used it in a room I used to work in and it ended up just looking like magnolia though.

I think Nutmeg white is a warm colour with a slight pink undertone.

Little Greene Clay Mid

SugarCookieMonster · 12/04/2025 18:39

@OrsolaRosso I liked that but I worried it was a bit dark. I like the look of Almost Oyster too.

@MissyB1 that looks lovely and is really similar to what I’m hoping for.

@backtickles yes I wanted to see it in natural light but the blue is definitely skewing the eye! We tried Nutmeg white but that looked almost grey/silver white in the dark end of the room.

@NorthFaceofthelaundrypile that’s a lovely shade. I think I need to get a tester in this fawn group of shades.

I’m about 3 tester pots away from letting 6yo DS choose because I’m losing the ability to tell the difference in colours now 😂

I had a Dulux Heritage colour called Cream, top is the colour chart and the bottom image is how it came out in my north facing, small windowed living room. Unfortunately I painted the whole room twice before I was like… I don’t want yellow!

Now I have F&B Tailor Tack, which in that room actually looks more like F&B Ground Pink. (Sorry – not an answer to your question but I feel your pain!)

Valspar New York City Winter - use the V&Co green paint as it has a lovely matt finish.

Have a look at Dulux Gentle Fawn.

We have mellow mocha in a north facing bedroom...I like it but it has a distinct violet tone in there. Will take a pic tomorrow

Omg one of my flats had natural hessian (I know because I asked the landlord what it was so I could touch up) and it was horrible! It’s truly the modern day landlord-special magnolia

lunaemma · 12/04/2025 22:57

I’ve just seen nutmeg something on Instagram and it looked lovely
will find it

lunaemma · 12/04/2025 22:58

Nutmeg White from Dulux is a good one.

SugarCookieMonster · 13/04/2025 17:09

OK picked up a load more testers (why are they so expensive now?!) and have narrowed it down to Mellow Mocha (top) or Soft Embrace (bottom).

Even though we love Soft Stone (middle) it’s too dark pink for our living room.

Ooh I like soft embrace! Mind you I love mellow mocha in my friend's house, she has it in her living room and the hall stairs and landing.

troppibambini6 · 13/04/2025 19:30

I think you need to paint a bit of the wall white then put the testers on. I feel like the other colours next to them are not making the colours look right.

SugarCookieMonster · 13/04/2025 21:55

I’ve just realised that Mellow mocha is the exact shade of my chairs so no wonder I liked it so much!

As suggested I’ve re-tested on a white background and waiting for them to settle and dry. We’ve decided to do a white undercoat so we even out the wall colours (we have a blue feature wall and dark taupe on the rest). The Natural Hessian and Nutmeg white already look loads better on the white backgrounds.

I have extreme regret at starting this project when I could have just had a fun week off work! 😂

Not the point, but I regret paint choices I've recently made.
I'm always on MN and can't believe that I didn't think of posting here.
Like you OP I completely lost all confidence and then I panicked.
I think I'm going to have to have walls repainted but can't bear to ask the lovely decorator to do them again .
It's a high ceilinged hall over stairs.

custardcreme · 14/04/2025 07:38

Your first colour does look yellowy (I like it) but even more so painted on a blue undercoat and next to blue, they’re opposite colours which exaggerate each other

This is exactly how I feel.
Adding to my angst is that we’re painting it ourselves so if I choose something I ultimately don’t like then DH and I have to spend another 2 days re-painting it! DS has been really good while we’ve done all the prep work but he’s getting bored and fed up now. He’s going to GPs today so we’re on a time crunch 😂

Also not the point, but I'm having paint regret right now, about a paint I bought and regretted, then used in a different place and loved, now used it on the front door and it looks tragic (in a place EVERYONE CAN SEE IT). And a new neighbour revealed in passing that he's a painter and decorator so also fretting over the poor finish AND poor colour choice. Even though we all know that no one gives a shit (especially because it looks insipid rather than being actively offensive).

Anyway, in hunting for a new front option I came across this brilliantly named colour:
