Double or King duvet on child's double bed

dotdotdot22 · 12/09/2024 09:53

Advice please! Child is moving to double bed so I need to upsize duvet. Do we get king size as all our existing duvet covers are king and then duvet can be interchangeable with other king beds or do we go for a double as might fit better on the bed?

I'm erring on King but can't decide 🫣

How old is the child? Will a king duvet be too heavy or too hot for them with all the excess?

Barkingdoghell · 12/09/2024 09:57

How old is the child? Under 4 they may just get a bit lost in all that duvet,
they may also want fun duvet covers (if you allow that) and that may be harder to find in king size.

That said I would normally always buy a size up duvet, I think it sits nicer on the bed and is more cosy.

Child is 5. They frequently get into our bed which has 2 king duvets on and seem to be ok! I was thinking of getting a low tog anyway

I think a king is a lot of duvet for a 5 year old!

Well, that's one of the other reasons. She's keen on superhero but they are all so hideous and poly cotton I couldn't bare it! King size would be a perfect excuse not to ruin the decor 😂 I'm so mean I know!

Double definitely.
DD was under single at this age but she’s quite a small child so it was plenty No way she could cope with king size.

CellophaneFlower · 12/09/2024 10:03

Aww don't be mean! Let her choose her own duvet covers... or the colours she likes at least!

You don’t have to sleep under it! Let the poor kid have what they want.
DD is in a double and has all the hideous kids bedding as it makes her happy.

I wouldn’t get a King.

Olika · 12/09/2024 10:06

King will be too big for a child in a double bed IMO. I would just let her choose her own duvet covers also.

titchy · 12/09/2024 10:08

Why not let the kid have her choice of super hero single duvet cover FFS. Besides singles are so much easier to change than king sized. You do sound quite mean though.

You can get plenty of kids ones in doubles-we have quite a collection!

dotdotdot22 · 12/09/2024 10:12

OK I get the message 😂 I was half kidding about the bedding. It's just she already has quite jazzy wallpaper I felt the superhero bedding might be too much but point taken! I was thinking fun still but perhaps more rainbow stripes or something. Seems like double is the way to go. Thanks all!

Aged 5? Single duvet, or double duvet if you absolutely have to. No bigger.

It's a double bed so single duvet will be a bit small..

Blimey I wouldn't get a king for a 5 year old! Probably wouldn't even get a double at that age!

Can't understand why a 5 year old needs a double bed never mind a king size duvet

It’s incredibly practical actually if you have the room. For us it means extra space when we have guests, means I can easily share with her if she is ill, makes bedtime stories infinitely more comfortable, more room for the cats and endless soft toys etc

There’s no disadvantages whatsoever but plenty of advantages!

onwardsup4 · 12/09/2024 11:15

@Cobblersorchard ok then point taken, a king size duvet on a double bed for a five year old?

This! Also good if they have sleepovers later on.

I don’t think a King is needed, we just have a double. A King is too big and doesn’t come
in fun designs.

TerrazzoChips · 12/09/2024 11:20

@dotdotdot22 id do tasteful but fun king size covers and secret superhero fitted sheets!

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/09/2024 11:22

My 2 kids (3 and 7) have double beds and we went for double duvets, even though like you we’ve sized up on our bed. Logic is: easier to change the bed especially overnight if there’s unexpected sickness or an accident, they can kick it off easily if they get too hot and you can still get kid’s designs. Not just that I think you should let her choose her preferred bedding but I’d be worried about overheating with a king size.

And @onwardsup4 doubles work for us because we can flex the space when we get a house full of relatives at Christmas, DD can have sleepovers without needing extra bedding, the beds are future proofed well into the teen years, you can sit next to them for bedtime stories and most importantly there’s loads of room for all the cuddly toys!!

BettyBardMacDonald · 12/09/2024 11:23

King. Always size up.

Get her a cheap superhero throw to toss over the nice duvet.

SparkyBlue · 12/09/2024 11:24

Some strange comments here about a double bed. We have bunk beds with the top single and the bottom double and the double bed is great. Actually DD went into the bottom double bed at the age of one with a bed rail and no issue at all.
OP definitely double as at times due to sickness and lack of clean bed linen I've had to stick king size on the double and it looks messy

I remember a thread ages ago where a poster was absolutely incensed about a 4yo with a double bed 😂 Her reasonings were bizarre but her main one was that kids should be allowed to be children and shouldn't be forced to grow up too fast 🤷‍♀️😂
