Double or King duvet on child's double bed

Advice please! Child is moving to double bed so I need to upsize duvet. Do we get king size as all our existing duvet covers are king and then duvet can be interchangeable with other king beds or do we go for a double as might fit better on the bed?

I'm erring on King but can't decide 🫣

To answer questions about the double bed, this is mainly because she has an enormous bedroom - currently it has a double bed and cot bed in there with lots of room to play. She sleeps in the cot bed currently but is getting too big for it. We didn't buy the double for her but had it spare and it is a low style so works well for a child. I'm not going to sell and buy a single when she'd likely want a double in a few years anyway! Also for the reasons listen above - more room for bedtime stories, cuddles, sleepovers etc! Thanks for all the sensible comments, I'm going to get a double duvet and perhaps some superhero sheets 🤩

It's a double bed so single duvet will be a bit small..

My eldest struggled managing a double duvet for a while (we only sized up because of issues at night that ment he almost hurt himself a few times, we hoped a bigger bed would help) do we just let him have the single duvet for a while - looked odd but he was happy! He has the double now but I think it's a bit heavy tbh and will be changing it for a lighter one that's easier to manage. However, he now loves making himself cosy in it so might have a fight on my hands 😆

I have a three year old in a small double bed. Double duvet fits perfectly. We were able to buy double bedding in styles she likes easily (Next had Frozen bedding in double size, for example). I haven’t had problems buying something age appropriate for her in double size but I’ve never seen children’s king sized bedding.

StuffedDriver · 12/09/2024 14:15

Double. They won’t need a king unless they are sharing the bed with anyone, in which case they may struggle to get enough duvet.

For anyone who's still on this thread would a 10.5 tog be ok as an all year round option? We're a windows open / heating off at night house all year round so the bedrooms are never hot...

Surely a little body would be swamped by a kind size? Do you not have a bed of your own you can compare with? Why ask others? Mumsnet is crazy sometimes. If you’re old enough to have kids, work it out!

We tended to use a low tog and add a fleece blanket if it was very cold.

My kids run hot anyway so don't like a super warm duvet. For me it was easier having a lighter one to get it washed and dried after inevitable illness/toilet accidents.

Good idea!

I don't have any double duvets no. I thought king would be fine but wanted to ask others to sense check - which they have and I've agreed a double would be better. It's quite a costly mistake which I why I asked for advice (kinda what Mumsnet is for Hmm)

I always size up - so a double duvet on a single bed, king size on a double bed, etc. The excess goes down the sides, so I don’t understand comments on how it’s too big for a five year old? It just means when they turn over in the night, part of them doesn’t get exposed?

That’s exactly the reasoning- if the duvet is bigger they can’t kick it off as easily, which with small kids isn’t necessarily a good thing because they’re more prone to overheating than adults. But I’m sure you know your own kids best and whether they’re likely to run hot!

Birdscratch · 12/09/2024 17:55

With a 5 year old I’d be thinking about the volume of stuff to be shoved in the machine when they throw up all over it. Superhero bedding might not be to your taste but I bet it’d dry quickly!

kittyycatt · 12/09/2024 17:58

DS12 has a double bed but a single duvet!

Be4thedawn · 12/09/2024 18:02

Both mine have double beds and king size duvets and got them from when they moved out of their cots. We've bit had any issues with it being too much duvet for them 😁

MotorwayDiva · 12/09/2024 18:11

DD has a double bed and originally had double duvet but was too much for her so we changed and put single on still the same 4 years later. Just get a nice throw to pop on if want aesthetics

Sandwichgen · 12/09/2024 18:16

With a king size, you can trap a good overhang between one side of the bed and the wall - assuming the bed is against the wall. And that will keep the duvet under control and make it easier to tidy the bed.

I’d go for a fleece superhero / cartoon character / pop star / whatever blanket to go over the duvet. Then you can use a non gaudy cover and a low tog duvet, because she will always have the extra layer if she needs it

Pinkandgreentrousers · 12/09/2024 18:25

King size definitely, I'd only get a double for a single bed.

MayFairSquare · 12/09/2024 18:39

I just went on a university tour with my seventeen year old and she was not keen on the double beds in the halls of residence as she won't be able to get her duvet covers from IKEA's children's department.

No, far far far too thick! Especially if you are going for the double. 7.5 tops in mid winter. Likely thinner in summer.
Please do a bit of research on small kids and how hot they run cf adults.

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/09/2024 19:37

Also 9 tog is the absolute max that a child that age should ever have, because they’re more prone to overheating than adults and you probably don’t want anything like that outside of winter. If you don’t want to do 2 duvets, which is what we do, then I’d go for ~7 tog with the option to chuck a fleece blanket over in winter and to swap to a sheet in summer.

Cobblersorchard · 12/09/2024 21:05

Yes we have a 9 and a 4.5, the 4.5 is used most of the year and the 9 only in deepest winter (we are in an old thatched cottage too).
