I'm rubbish at decoration how best to deal with these tiles?

I want to decorate the bathroom. I'm crap at DIY so don't want to remove these tiles or replace the mirror...

How best to decorate the bathroom with them in situ? Could I go for a black and white them and just paint the tiles with ceramic paint?

Or is there a nice colour scheme where I can kind of 'lean on' to the blue and match the rest of the bathroom around it?

Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks.

Can you do a further back pic so you can see more of the bathroom?

No not really. I'm just after colour advice, thanks.

It’s impossible to say because you’re only showing a tiny strip of tile and a bit of wall. What’s on the floor? Colour of bathroom suite? Where’s the window?

Used well, paint is a saviour. A nice buttercup yellow will lift the room and the tile into a more deliberalte and fun realm.

What is that behind you? If it is a dark door - paint it and the door frame white. A roman blind with a hint of red would finish it off nicely!

Would love more pics though.

Sorry I can't take the pics of the entire space, it's a relative's home that I'm helping her to improve. Her personal stuff is everywhere I'm not uploading photos of her private space to the internet.

You don't need to see the rest of the bathroom, I'll be replacing the floor and painting everywhere I just need to know how I can co-ordinate to these tiles or whether I can paint them.

Thanks for the buttercup yellow suggestion, how do I make the tiles work with that?

You can get tile paint, but you would have to be meticulous about applying it correctly to get decent results. And it would still be apparent you'd painted them.

I'd probably leave them as they are and choose colours that complement them instead. If all the walls were painted blue/aqua the tiles wouldn't stand out as much.

It's not impossible to say? I'm asking can I paint these tiles and if I can't what colours would work to co ordinate with them.

I wouldn't paint the walls yellow with blue tiles.

Perfect, thank you this is EXACTLY the advice I was looking for. I thought it would be a pain to paint them I'll look at aqua paint.

Are the tiles just around the mirror?

compactopera · 30/12/2023 20:51

I just wandered off to do a Google image search of aqua blue bathrooms - depending on the fixtures and layout of the space, there's nice combinations possible.

Varying from all aqua walls to some white, some aqua, plus maybe some wood tones.

Maybe you could pull up some images with your relative to come up with a plan?

I wouldn’t paint aqua, I can’t see how big the room is, but think it would be too much. What’s the style of the sink/shower/toilet/bath? Are the fixings chrome? Yellow would look awful in my opinion, unless you’re going for the 90s changing rooms look. What floor tiles are you going with? You will have to remove some of the fixtures to tile the floor (you need to tile under the pedestal and bath for example).

I would start with the floor tiles, do you want plain or patterned? Replacing wall tiles isn’t too big or expensive a job depending on what you are looking for, especially if you are doing the floor. Do the tiles go down to the floor as the bottom ones are likely to need replacing in order to tile the floor?

I have blue ish tiles and painted my walls dulux rock salt, floor is dark grey none slip stuff and towels are blue and grey
Apologies for the messy bathroom but I CBA Grin second pic shows tile colour better

Yes, they're only around the mirror. Rest of the tiling is white and still in good condition .

Thank you that's really helpful. I wonder now if that wall the mirror is on can be an aqua feature wall then just do the rest off white...

It won't be floor tiles, she's having Lino fitted - this point is non negotiable...

Lino will need to match the mirror tiles as they won't be going anywhere...

If you have a steady hand , could you paint some of the tiles a contrasting colour to break up the blue?

Torganer · 30/12/2023 20:59

Sorry, I didn’t see you were having Lino before. What colour is the Lino?

Thanks, I was wondering that....not sure how steady my hand is 😬 then was worried about the grout...but if I painted alternate ties white would that work?

Edited

Lino will be ordered to fit around the colour scheme which will be dictated by these tiles around the mirror.

I would keep the tiles and not paint them, it rarely looks good. Depending on the colour of the lino and the bath/shower/sink/taps, I would go with a white tone. How much light does the room get? Then you can decide whether you need a warm or cool white. Which way does the room face?

Thanks, pretty dark in there, north facing .
