Ordering a new sofa

damekindness · 08/02/2022 18:43

My old sofa is decades old and falling apart so I really need to order a couple of new sofas. I've looked at places like DFS and SCS and their customer feedback is just awful in terms of delivery time, aftercare and customer service.

I'm prepared to wait a few months but all I'm reading about is 6 months plus delay, poor communication, constantly changing delivery dates and non existent customer care etc etc

Has anyone had a good experience lately? Is there anywhere that can be recommended?

We ordered a corner and chair from sofa.com recently. We love the furniture and was good service too.

Ours is loaf but around 8 years old, still looks new

IKEA. Ektorp.

I could've written the OP. When's the best time to buy a sofa? What time of year? I see there's 20% off some in that link, but there always seem to be discounts of some sort, so it's hard to know when the genuine sales are, and not just normal prices for two weeks and "discounted" the rest of the time.

Quornflakegirl · 08/02/2022 20:31

Not DFS. We paid for them to have our old one taken away, it was taken away the day before our new sofas were meant to arrive. They didn’t arrive and we ended up sitting on the floor for 6 weeks! I was livid and customer service was useless and basically didn’t care.

fudgecat · 08/02/2022 20:38

Have a look at sofasofa, we have only just replaced our old ones from there after 20 years and they were still in great condition.

BeautifulBirds · 08/02/2022 20:52

Bought from SCS, we were told at ordering the lead time was 16 weeks. 16 weeks later our new sofa arrived, on time, assembled and all wrapping taken away.
The price went down between purchasing and delivery and the cheapest price was honoured.
They were great.

Snug ....... comes in a box (which sounds weird) but once up absolutely can't tell and it's comfy

whoruntheworldgirls · 08/02/2022 20:56

We used DFS a few months ago, sofa was ready early, it's gorgeous and very comfy, delivery team were lovely, really helpful and made sure it was all assembled and the packaging taken away.

whoruntheworldgirls · 08/02/2022 20:58

Also ordered a chair from Oak Furniture Land, again gorgeous and so comfy, long delivery time but was worth it

Annamariefl · 08/02/2022 21:04

I highly recommend Next. Lots of choice, no pressure from staff, delivered on time. Was very pleasantly surprised to find that they are made in the UK too. Very comfortable and feels substantial.

Many thanks all for taking the time to reply. Some reassurances and a few other places to think about buying sofas from!

I've been looking at sofa sites since you posted this and - quel coincidence! - an advert has popped up on FB for sofah.co.uk, which looks good. Worth having a look.

I've bought 3 sofas from sofa.com and they have been excellent every time!

How are you getting on? I've been on a sofa hunt for the past few weeks and feel like I've been going round in circles!

I was quite sure I wanted one tan sofa and then perhaps a couple of accent chairs or small sofa - I still need to decide this.

I think I'm going to go for the Next Darwin leather sofa as it is comfortable, the cushions don't move and it is the colour I want and can't seem to get anywhere else! It'll also hopefully come in 8 weeks, compared to dfs / sofology lead times of 16 + weeks...

Does anyone have this sofa and can recommend?

we've bought all of our sofas second hand from ebay or marketplace. appreciate this isn't isn't everyone but its another idea. they're usually available immediately which is fab! we pick them up ourselves but more recently have paid the seller to deliver, or would pay someone with a van or trailer to collect and deliver.

AssemblySquare · 17/02/2022 07:56

Once upon a time I would have recommended sofasofa just like a PP has. Our first one from there lasted about 15 years before we passed it on because it didn’t suit our taste anymore. We replaced it from sofasofa and that fell apart after 4 years, and had been back to the factory twice!! We decided that was a blip… ordered another one from sofasofa. Huge mistake. 18 months later it looks like shit, softened to the point of becoming very uncomfortable and the customer service dept have been absolutely useless. The fabric and overall quality is dreadful. My parents still have their 20 year old sofasofa furniture and it looks lovely, still comfortable and in excellent condition.

I've crumbled and ordered from DFS in their sale. Apparently their "talented craftsman and woman are preparing my order" There's a delivery date set for early April - though I'm prepared for longer.

My fingers remain crossed that the bad reviews won't apply to my order Grin

I wouldn't ever order a sofa without seeing it first and testing it out.
I have my eye on a Next one that I tested in store... just waiting to have the money for it!

DazzleNoOne · 17/02/2022 10:42

Which one @youngestisapsycho?

I was looking at the Next Wilson, but I'm just not sure about the moving cushions. So hard to decide!

youngestisapsycho · 17/02/2022 10:53

@DazzleNoOne
It was the Stamford highback.... I'm getting old and like to rest my head properly! 😂 and the arms aren't too high if I want to lay down.

MissMaple82 · 17/02/2022 11:08

Had 2 sofas from Dfs, never had any issues

jay55 · 17/02/2022 11:58

I ordered from made.com 22/1 they said 6-12 weeks and it's coming faster on 21/2.
Most places have an option for what's in the warehouse to get a faster delivery.
I was lucky in that the colour I wanted was in the sale.

trickyex · 17/02/2022 16:34

I always buy second hand too, FB or Gumtree. You can test them out, its much better for the environment and no waiting. If you dont get on with it, then its limited investment so feels easier to sell and replace.
My local marketplace has Sofa workshop, Tetrad and Multiyork sofas at the moment, as well as IKEA/DFS/Next etc.

damekindness · 06/04/2022 12:08

Just an update - did order from DFS in the end and found the whole process from ordering to delivery (around 8 weeks) to be really good throughout.
