Ex council house .. modernist cool.?

Hello, we moved from a stunning period home of 5 floors to a 2 storey ex council house in a very expensive an beautiful area... think sea, woods, etc.
I love the area but am struggling with the shape of the house, the low ceilings, the windows long and wide not tall and high.

Our previous home was mostly wood floors, white walls with original windows and fireplaces. We also had strong confident colours. I understood the shapes and style.
In this house ,i utterly lack confidence.
The doors arw cheap flat doors. The simple style does suit the house tho.
I feel that this era ( boxy 1950?) Suits minimlist design? However, it can also lack style and strenght in this settimg cf with a ,say, stunning modernist home.
I have white upvc windows, all beige carperts and neutral walls ( shades of white). My dh finds it relaxing.
In my old house the white worked , as the housw had drama . High celings, 25 foot kithen ,sash windows, woodburners and original fires. This house needs a style injestion .. the house does not carry its own style iyswim?
Ive looked at the book style council on line but not bought it. Ive bought some ercol, which i love and a unit ( side board from made) nothing looks cool with the cheap doors, the windows.. i just cant seem to crack it .. i dont know were to start.. any ideas please and also any web sites. ?
There are only two rooms downstairs both face the road.( privacy also issue) and are long and narrow to back of the house at about 10 feet wide each ,then 15 long to.rear of house.
Thanks ... thanks !

LOL, I am much better at what colours I don’t think work than those that do!

A dark olive could be fab! Tester pot time!

No way would I be adding fake beams over the fireplace though. Black melamine faced shelf if you must.

Freelady · 30/12/2021 20:16

I thought beam.was a more rustic thing , which was why i asked ...

Hi OP
I could have written this! Top tips:

Swap doors for oak panelled ones ASAP, these cost about 99 quid from B&Q.

Advice for an identical 15 x 10ft living room, given to me by an interior designer: use mirrors to brighten up the space

Use modern furniture with glass, fine metal legs you can "see through" to stop it feeling boxy

Use sofas with a 6 inch plus gap at the bottom

Use Roman blinds, not curtains to stop it feeling dark

Best of luck!

We have a 50s ex council house, built of Nori Brick, it could withstand a hurricane it's rock solid. Don't listen to the rude person that said it will be cheaply built. They are usually built to last with minimal maintenance actually.
We have ours very modern inside, like a newbuild really. White skirting boards and door frames and solid wood doors painted white. The lower ceilings do help to keep warmer in winter but can be very hot in summer. I love our home.

The dark ones have a specifically 50s vibe to me. The blonde Ercol are timeless. I would go Ercol. There are people on Etsy who make cushions for them, or it should be easy if you're handy with a sewing machine.

Freelady · 31/12/2021 13:46

Thank you. Am.looking for.mimimList mid century modern ..

I'm hoping to one day buy an ex council house like the one I used to own. They are wooden framed houses that were put up in days but are well insulated, big rooms, so easy to take walls out as there are no supporting walls or to alter & move rooms around. A home is what you make it, you can make your new home just as cosy as your period house, add features like chimney breasts, picture rails, coving. Treat it like a blank canvas & enjoy doing it.

HunterGatherer · 03/01/2022 08:08

Our house is 60s. We have just ditched curtains downstairs completely and gone for oak venetian blinds. We think they look lovely and they are much more practical in terms of pricavy and filtering sunlight.

Freelady · 03/01/2022 13:48

HunterGatherer thanks for the advice.! Been thinking of it myself but as my windows are ugly am dithering. I do know that i need to get rid of the curtians in living room as they are way too fussy for this style of house and only really worked in our old.period one.

Following with interest as I'm going to be renovating my 1949 red brick ex council house this year. This thread is great inspiration as I'm finding it hard to see past the woodchip and anaglypta at the moment! I love what you have done so far OP.

Freelady · 06/01/2022 16:38

Fispi thank you and good luck with yours.
The first thing I did was rip out an 1980s fireplace and put a woodburner in
.
And replace 1980 kitchen with the £200 1970s f/ book one.
I did make mistake with flooring in kitchen and regret it.
If u want to run any ideas by , I think jump on this thread.. ive had some real confidence boosting support here!
