Ex council house .. modernist cool.?

Hello, we moved from a stunning period home of 5 floors to a 2 storey ex council house in a very expensive an beautiful area... think sea, woods, etc.
I love the area but am struggling with the shape of the house, the low ceilings, the windows long and wide not tall and high.

Our previous home was mostly wood floors, white walls with original windows and fireplaces. We also had strong confident colours. I understood the shapes and style.
In this house ,i utterly lack confidence.
The doors arw cheap flat doors. The simple style does suit the house tho.
I feel that this era ( boxy 1950?) Suits minimlist design? However, it can also lack style and strenght in this settimg cf with a ,say, stunning modernist home.
I have white upvc windows, all beige carperts and neutral walls ( shades of white). My dh finds it relaxing.
In my old house the white worked , as the housw had drama . High celings, 25 foot kithen ,sash windows, woodburners and original fires. This house needs a style injestion .. the house does not carry its own style iyswim?
Ive looked at the book style council on line but not bought it. Ive bought some ercol, which i love and a unit ( side board from made) nothing looks cool with the cheap doors, the windows.. i just cant seem to crack it .. i dont know were to start.. any ideas please and also any web sites. ?
There are only two rooms downstairs both face the road.( privacy also issue) and are long and narrow to back of the house at about 10 feet wide each ,then 15 long to.rear of house.
Thanks ... thanks !

Houzz is a great website for advice and ideas, including free advice from some professionals and those with a very keen interest in interior design.

I had one poster very kindly produce me designs, using a design app, for my house when doing a full renovation. It was great to see the options I had.

I have a 70s era house, big wide windows, low ceilings, my love is Georgian houses so this was an utter mare for me too. I painted all the walls white and I lived in it for a long time before I did anything. But I’ve really found modern and mid century modern work well. Kartell Fly Lights, Mushroom lamps, a bit of IKEA and a bit of Ercol/gplan/Nathan. Our bedroom is next and I’m going more and more into Palm Springs with that.

My taste is kitsch anyway which helps. But I’ve found white with a shed load of colour - artwork, rugs, lamps, lights whatever it is, has worked best.

We have the light ercol dining table/chairs. In our last house we had dark wood floors (eroko) and it looked great. Wood doesn't have to match, although you probably wouldn't want too many types close together.

sunshinesupermum · 29/12/2021 14:43

Those lamps are gorgeous BrassicaBabe!!!!

sunshinesupermum · 29/12/2021 14:49

i think my burnt orange hi gloss origianal 70s kithchen may look.bonkers!

It absolutely won't! Perfect colour in the 1970s when this modernist style was the thing! Before I left home in 1979 I helped my parents redo their kitchen with bright green hi-gloss cabinets and dark blue tiling and round ceramic sink! It looked amazing. No sludgy greys then in a modernist home LOL

sunshinesupermum · 29/12/2021 14:54

Freelady That lamp works very well. I used Etsy as well as Vinterior when furnishing my 1930s built flat and modernist furniture/furnishings goes well here too with lowish ceilings etc. My floor is a dark wood laminate that is almost 20 years old and still as good as new.

We live in a 1950s council house, one previous owner when we bought it and lots of original fittings. The precast tiled fireplaces went, don't care how original they were! The doors looked like this with bakelite handles. We kept the doors but changed the handles. Furniture wise we have a mix of modern (Ikea!) with a couple of mid century bits, e.g. a couple of parker knoll armchairs. Walls are all plain.

The house is gorgeous so much style potential!!

The carpet is grim I agree. I think I would want to warm the colour scheme in the living room a bit

AshLane · 29/12/2021 15:46

Rugs? ( for the much hated carpet). Very much part of the scandi styling.

This Indian company sell via eBay and have loads of different styles and colours. They delivered within a week when I ordered.

What an absolutely snobbish opinion.

It's not just snobbish, it's factually wrong. I wouldn't worry, ThesecondLEM clearly knows nothing about the history of social housing in Britain or how heavily regulated this kind of architecture was until the 1980s.

OP you need to look up the Modern House - they're an estate agent who basically specialise in mid century modern housing. They put out a lot of content including podcasts, an Instagram account, a hardcopy magazine and most recently a book called A Modern Way to Live. I guarantee this will help you fall in love with the aesthetic of your lovely home.

Nice house, nice things, but that room is very matchy-matchy. Walks/sofa/cushions/art work all in same colours is what is giving you Next Directory vibes. I would paint the walls white, ditch the cushions and change the artwork for something bigger.

Ouchiehelpneeded · 29/12/2021 16:56

I think there's too much furniture in the kitchen. The sideboard and basket chairs are nice, but they force you to push the dining table into the circulation space. Less is more!
