Please help someone with no taste sort my bedroom

I desperately need some help! I have absolutely no taste or design flair and need to sort out my bedroom once and for all.

My husband and I are just rediscovering time together after babies so I am trying to get a romantic, cozy feel but not too feminine as obviously DH has to sleep in here as well.

Theme has always been white, grey, black. Red which are the colours I like.

Blinds cost a fortune and can’t be changed but I do need some curtains and poles. Should I get curtains the length of the windows or go for ‘to the floor’ curtains? I love my soft white bedding but would like a nice coloured bedspread over the top. I quite like the colour/pattern of the cover on the chair (it’s just an extra dining room chair covered as we have nowhere else to store it). Rugs could be changed but I do like thick, fluffy ones as the floor is very cold.

Really open to any ideas and words of advice.

Forgot to add, the bedroom has a very cold, bare feel to it at the moment. I need some warmth and romance!

I'd start with a couple of houseplants and a big picture or two.

Foghead · 19/01/2021 21:32

A throw on the bed and a picture on the wall over the bed and some lamps.
What colours do you like?

icebubbles · 19/01/2021 21:36

Floor length curtains.
Lots of muted soft colours (no red!).
A couple of pictures - the New Yorker magazine has an awesome back catalogue of cool front covers that look great frames.
Repaint the chest of drawers with a softer colour - light pink or grey?
Add candles and plants
Big soft pillows, a lovely throw for the bed
If the budget allows, a squishier bedroom chair or floor length mirror if space
Frenchic has lovely paints and they have some great upcycling inspiration
Send an 'after' photo when you're done!

Foghead · 19/01/2021 21:38

Google images of bedroom ideas. There are some lovely looking ones that are quite simple to achieve.

CaughtInTheCovid · 19/01/2021 21:39

It’s a nice blank canvas but looks like stark and bare. Things I would do:

  • floor length curtains, maybe a nice white semi sheer so they just frame the window but don’t necessarily need to block light
  • a nice throw and cushions for on the bed. I like the white bedding but bed needs to be made neater. A bit of texture like a thick knitted wool blanket and a few cushions that tone in would be lovely. If you like the rug choose blanket and cushions that tone in with the red.
  • fair enough if it’s the only place it will go but it does look like a dining chair just chucked in the corner! I’d replace it with a smaller armchair type chair if you could it would look cosier.

Floor length curtains. Replace the rug with a fluffy light one. Bedside tables with touch led lamps with warm bulbs. I have them and they are gorgeous because you can adjust the brightness. Get a Himalayan salt lamp for the dresser.

Chalkcheese · 19/01/2021 21:42

You need some textures, a warm colour (I'm really into pink at the moment but I know it's not for everyone!) for accessories even just one or two with a warm colour, curtains for over the blind because blinds always look clinical and not cosy, and plants are always great. Also some art on the walls, and some shelves for nick nacks or books or whatever it is that you're into.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 19/01/2021 21:42

Have you got bedside tables? I would say lamps on each side always make a cosy relaxing feel.
Then yes I'd add a curtain rail and floor length curtains.
Picture over the bed?
Follow some interiors people on Instagram or look for ideas on Pinterest? Get some interiors magazines? All good places for inspiration 🙂

Knittedfairies · 19/01/2021 21:44

You have your own taste, not 'absolutely no taste'. I think you need to soften all those hard lines with some floor length curtains and some lamps. Something on the walls would help too; your penguins look a bit lost and could do with some company. Maybe a bigger headboard?

TornadoOfSouls · 19/01/2021 21:47

Yes, go on Pinterest.

If you like red, a patterned rug or Welsh blanket could bring some in without it being stark.

If you get curtains, definitely get floor length ones.

I think the room would benefit from some natural textures and colours, so a big plant is a good idea, even a wicker wastebasket or something, natural fibres for rug etc.

Patienceisvirtuous · 19/01/2021 21:48

Get rid of the dining chair - replace with plant stand and lovely plant.

Yes to sheer white floor length curtains.

Yes to some nice prints on the wall.

Yes to throws and cushions on the bed.

A bigger rug. Check out the Berber rugs on wayfair, benuta or Fy. The latter also has fab prints and accessories. La Redoute and H&M home also great - check them out for ideas x

ZubinB · 19/01/2021 21:50

get some cool art prints on the wall - from the Tate or something, some bold bedding (bright floral/William Morris for example) - you just need some prints, some colour and texture. a huge rug to cover most of laminate - something woolly and soft. Some nice lighting (warm lamps) would be good too. Go bold! XX

Soontobe60 · 19/01/2021 21:51

I’d get a carpet!
Also, paint the wall behind the bed in a dark colour, then add a throw the same colour on the bed. Definitely floor length curtains - your window is quite small.

Some cushions and a furry throw for the bed, some nice curtains. A nice mini chandelier type lampshade, definitely lamps and a picture/mirror above the bed or even a feature walls Have a look at some show homes online they are great for inspiration and easy to replicate if you have a blank canvas! X

Toilenstripes · 19/01/2021 21:53

Something like this would look great.

We painted all the walls white except the back wall in an inky blue, put up a shelf with fairy lights and mismatched frames, white bedding with a navy throw and a pink throw, black and white geo cushions. We love it.

Agree with floor length curtains and green plants.

How about sheep skins on the floor and on the chair?

MrsSmith2021 · 19/01/2021 22:03

I recognise the colours you like but they’re not conducive to the warmth and cosy feel you want.

I strongly recommend going softer on the walls, a warm grey is very neutral, or a warm white if you want to stay light (such as dulux timeless or farrow and ball skimming stone).

ALWAYS go floor length with curtains. ALWAYS.

Layers add warmth, so look at how your favourite hotel style your beds and put money into decent bedding.

Neutrals are always nicer, stark colours like black and red can feel very cold. I’d go more towards a blush pink and warm grey.

Check out studio McGee interior designer, I love how she uses neutrals to make everything beautiful. And sticks and the city on Instagram. She’s not an interior designer but I love everything she does.

ZubinB · 19/01/2021 22:04

Go bold, choose things you think are beautiful (everyone has taste) No 'themes'! Dunelm, Next, John Lewis, Mataram, Asda - whatever your budget XX Pics attached for ideas xx

More of that red. And some textures that aren't smooth.

Welsh blankets are the first thing your colour scheme made me think of.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=welsh+blanket+red&safe=strict&client=safari&hl=en-GB&prmd=sivn&sxsrf=ALeKk02m35BcRss01YWuedhhS9HwHpnodg:1611093432735&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjpIfeeqjuAhVRa8AKHSXtAMkQAUIFSgC&biw=375&bih=553&dpr=2

A tapestry, quilt or welsh blanket pinned up on the wall behind the bed?

A throw for the bed? A fake fur one even?

Plants in dark red pots,

New bedding?

Think about turning your penguins into a group of pictures. Are there any places or album covers that have resonance for the two of you that could go on the wall?

A red cushion and a throw over that chair?

Lamps. Lampshades. A string of lights if that's you? (If you don't know try it, they don't cost much.)

A mirror on the dresser. (One with a bit of an aesthetic appeal.)

You don't have to do it all at once. Add things then add more.

(I'm a minimalist, but I also like cosy

Toomuchleopard · 19/01/2021 22:11

@sausagepastapot your room looks really lovely

Toomuchleopard · 19/01/2021 22:17

This is your sort of colours but looks warm due to the textures and soft furnishings. I think a big upholstered headboard or bed frame, lamps, curtains, cushions and throw on the bed would make a massive difference.

Thank you everyone! Lots to think about. So you think long white sheer curtains? Would they look ok with the grey blinds? No idea what other colours to go for though really
