What would you put in your ideal utility room?

littlemissblue2000 · 27/06/2020 23:06

We are hoping to convert our large garage into 2 rooms - a study at the far end and a utility room at the house end with a stud wall and door between. It is quite a large room around 6 metres x 4 metres, with a door out to the side path and a door into the house on the other side.
I know I want my washing machine and tumble dryer in there, a large Belfast sink and some cupboards etc. We have a 2nd large fridge freezer which will need to be in there.
What flooring is best? Lighting? Is it a good idea to have a radiator? What would you / have you got in yours?!

A room that big would have space to dry stuff that can't be tumble dried, so it would be best heated. The dryer and fridge freezer would also work better in winter in a room that isn't cold. Plus it would stop the water supply from freezing. I had a washer in an unheated outhouse and couldn't use it in extremely cold weather because the pipes had frozen.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/06/2020 23:18

Downstairs toilet if there isn't one already (in a seperate room obviously)
Storage for iron board, iron, and airer.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/06/2020 23:19

Definitely heated. Loads of cupboard space with doors. Make sure there are varied heights for the shelves to fit large objects. Don't neglect to use the higher space as well, for example above the freezer. Shelves would be very handy up there. I would have a polished concrete floor with a drain built in in case of any leaks.

Pelleas · 27/06/2020 23:19

I'd love a sink in mine.

Knittedfairies · 27/06/2020 23:22

I'd have a Sheila maid - an overhead rack for drying laundry.

BrieAndChilli · 27/06/2020 23:28

A framed print of all the washing symbols!!

Space /shelf’s for several washing baskets ideally 1 per person to sort clean laundry into

Space for hoover and a rack for baking brooms etc

Sink with flexible hose tap - would be good when cleaning things like wellies and shoes etc

Space for hanging clothes to dry

Rail to store hangers and ironed clothes

Maybe space for recycling boxes?? We have stacked ones from ikea with lift up lids at the front

altforvarmt · 27/06/2020 23:33

Definitely a Sheila maid, as mentioned above.

Well-heated, with the addition of a dehumidifier. It makes clothes drying much faster.

I'd have the washing machine and dryer mounted up off the floor, with room to slide washing baskets underneath them.

And I'd have a couple of these Ikea cupboards for sorting dirty laundry. It's just a shame that they're not sold in the UK.

A Belfast sink. Loads of storage. Washing machine ...tumble dryer... space for drying on lines or racks. ...an extra fridge.

Destroyedpeople · 27/06/2020 23:36

...an ironing board attached to the wall and u could just swing it down when you want to use it...

AuntyFungal · 27/06/2020 23:45

Dog shower - I really, really want one of those.

No carrying two reluctant pooches upstairs.
No grime ring around the bath.
No (strangely satisfying) jumper weaving amounts of plug hair removal.
No wet hair, puddles of water on the floor - in fact, everywhere.
No major bathroom clean up...

Ginnotgym · 27/06/2020 23:54

I have;

  • second dishwasher
  • washing machine
  • tumble drier
  • cupboard that is pull out laundry baskets
  • wall drying rack that pulls out
  • tall cupboards with tons of space for vases, table linen, craft materials, mops, hoover etc
0Muggle0 · 28/06/2020 00:00

I agree with the dog shower!

GreenTulips · 28/06/2020 00:02

Drying racks - large pole to hang washing or ironing
Huge set of shelves or drawers for sorted socks and pants for everyone can include folded T-shirt’s Etc
Laundry shoot from upstairs - heaven

Pangur2 · 28/06/2020 00:03

We have a small utility room off the kitchen. It has a big fridge freezer (we have a small one in the kitchen) a washing machine, a sink, cupboards inc one that fits an ironing board, the wall charger thingie for the hoover, pull out clothes drying frame and a dehumidifier.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/06/2020 00:05

A dehumidifier. I have loads of stuff that shouldn't be tumbled, I hang it up in the utility and it's done!

GlamGiraffe · 28/06/2020 00:07

I'd have underfloor heating to keep the room warm to dry or air my washing. Just keep it on a low heat.
A dehumidifier
Washing machine and tumble driven
Big dink and draining board.
Definitely a sheila maid
Big work surface.
Cupboards with baskets to keep different items of clothing in if you're waiting to collect a load of a certain type and also to put clean stuff before ironing.
Cupboards for every gleaming product imaginable plus more
Hoover cupboard
Place to put iron and ironing board.
Dirty shoe rack.

ThreeFish · 28/06/2020 00:14

We have been doing this in lockdown. Had planning permission previously just not got round to it.
Don't buy a back to wall Close coupled toilet- pain in the arse to fit. Villeroy and Bosch im looking at you.
Can't have an integrated tumble dryer despite kitchen company designing it so, it's a fire risk
What has been good is sliding doors built into stud walls.
Also good is getting new electric with a neutral in, so they can be controlled by Alexa app.

Jeremyironsnothing · 28/06/2020 00:15

Drying racks - lots of.

Shelves for each person to sort clean clothes into piles eg PJ's, t-shirts, trousers, underwear etc.
Actually something like this would be ideal

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kallax-shelving-unit-white-30275861/

Jeremyironsnothing · 28/06/2020 00:16

Shoe storage - also lots of.

hadenoughbleach · 28/06/2020 00:22

Shelves to fold towels on.

BlackPuddingEggs · 28/06/2020 00:25

I have a Peko drying cupboard in mine which I love.

Raise your washing machine / tumble dryer off the floor on a base with a drawer. It makes it easier to load / unload and also much easier to drain the machine via the trap thing if the cycle goes wrong and it won’t empty. I have seen these with a pull out shelf between the drawer and machine to stand wash baskets on while loading / unloading.

Rails to hold hangers with ironed clothes on, room for a laundry box for each family member to sort clean washing into.

If it’s large enough that you will actually do the ironing in there I would consider a wall mounted TV or speakers to play podcasts through to make ironing less tedious.

GreenTulips · 28/06/2020 00:36

I’d want the sleeves to fit a proper washing basket - the big ones is they are to hand and have each persons clean washing in and like PP sort of white storage when there’s a load

Unknown2020 · 28/06/2020 07:42

In my recently renovated utility room I have -

Toilet
Fridge/freezer
Washing machine and tumble dryer side by side with work top running over top
Belfast sink
Floor to ceiling units to match kitchen
Radiator so clothes can go on clothes horse in there when the weathers not nice
Tiled flooring.

littlemissblue2000 · 28/06/2020 20:19

Some really good ideas thank you! What kind of flooring is best? Lino? Anyone know if you can get a Belfast sink with a hose type tap?

OP posts:
Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 20:22

Well sinks and taps are bought separately so I am sure you could do that. It would be a v cool u room sink....
