Grouting regrets

Grouting in the bathroom has just gone up. I saw it and burst into tears.

Tiles are light grey. Grout is very beige.

Tiler happens to be my dad and he convinced me that it was a neutral colour and would blend in seamlessly ... It hasn't, it's fucking beige.

What am I going to do?!

I know realistically re-grout the bloody room but he's saying I'll just have to get used to it... Why did I bother buying new tiles just to have the final effect ruined?!

We got grout dye and it's a ball ache but it's worth it.

Sorry your dad did such a good job with the tiles but fucked up the grout!

Amstelbier · 10/06/2020 20:10

Here are my grey tiles with an anthracite grout, just so you can see the contrast

I wanted it to blend in, hence light grey, but I took his word on it that jasmine would look good.

He's going to finish up with fucking Jasmine sealer tomorrow as well. Gah.

@BestOption
I like your tiles where are they from. I have been looking for some ideas for my cloakroom. Grin

AnnaSW1 · 10/06/2020 20:52

Oh gosh ask him to do the sealant a different colour! At least then you only have to change the grout.

Patsypie · 10/06/2020 20:55

Sorry, it looks shit. It has to be redone. Don't let him do anything else with 'jasmine'!

Atalune · 10/06/2020 20:55

Don’t let him finish with the wrong sealant.

Grouting is easy. Pick it out and DIY. It’s a very satisfying job.

CompletelyFUBAR · 10/06/2020 20:55

Ah no, don't let him use the jasmine sealant.. Please.

ProfessorPollington · 10/06/2020 21:00

Definitely not the sealant that is the one thing you can't fix! We have jasmine grout in between beige tiles. Sorry OP grout pen your best option here.

sierra2020 · 10/06/2020 21:04

Ahhhh op I understand your frustration!!! That's the problem when you have family doing the work for you, you can't complain without them going mad! My brother inlaw did my bathroom, it came out perfect only because I picked everything, he wanted to change some of things and place things differently to what I stated, but thankfully he listened to me! I even picked the GREY grouting to match my tiles, and am so glad I did because he was about to use WHITE! I
Too would've cried had he used a colour other than the grey

I would say, watch YouTube how to grout, should be easier for you as you'll be doing it on top of the current grouting

Dinosauraddict · 10/06/2020 21:10

I am really sorry OP but the grout is hideous and ruins the look of the tiles (which are lovely)!

sierra2020 · 10/06/2020 21:11

Just read the update on sealant. Maybe don't answer the door to your dad tomorrow? 😂

Text him and say you will redo the grout yourself as you really don't like how the colour looks against the grey tiles, maybe he'll feel sorry for you and agree to do it..

BruceAndNosh · 10/06/2020 21:12

I have jasmine grout and sealer on BEIGE tiles. Don't let him seal with jasmine

Flipflopsaga · 10/06/2020 21:25

Your tiles are really lovely OP but you are right, the grout doesn’t go. It spoils the whole look. Do NOT back down! It is your house and you will see the grout multiple times a day! If he is not willing to redo the grout, just explain that you love the tiles however cannot let him seal the grout as you can’t live with it. You are not being selfish or ungrateful. I’d have the chain up on the front door in the morning 😆 (I can say this as I have had similar experiences with my mother in law, I’d get up and she’d already have done what she considered ‘would look better’ even though I had categorically stated that I didn’t want it, because she’d arrived at 6 a.m on a weekend and let herself in!)

CrystalMaisie · 10/06/2020 21:30

As someone has already said you can dye the grout. I saw someone on Instagram dye theirs to match their grey tiles. It’s redeemable.
Jasmine sealant would not be.

Letthemysterybe · 10/06/2020 22:24

Ah that’s a shame. He’s clearly a good tiler. I guess he overreacted because he was expecting you to see it and be happy with the job and say thank you, not burst into tears! Maybe he’ll be more reasonable tomorrow.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 10/06/2020 22:28

Grout pen. I use them all the time. Very easy to use and keeps my grout pure white.

strugglingwithdeciding · 11/06/2020 00:17

Regrouting isn't an easy job well removing the original grout isn't it's messy and time consuming but if you really hate it best to do it now as maybe it will remove easier as not long done ?
Grout pens I've heard mixed reviews as looking for myself as my grout has gone a yellow colour in my bathroom and it won't clean off

strugglingwithdeciding · 11/06/2020 00:19

@CaroleFuckingBaskin could you let me know which one you use as I need to do this but reading really mixed reviews

Bluesheep8 · 11/06/2020 07:02

He's done a beautiful job op, but yes it's the wrong colour. The thing is, it's not his fault as I'm assuming you chose the grout? Just be very humble, blame yourself for the mistake and ask him to re do it. Silver grey is the shade you need i think.
I've been in a similar situation. Paid a decorator to paint a room and HATED it. Once he'd accepted that I wasn't criticising his work and that the mistake was entirely mine it was redone. You'll obviously need to pay for his time though. Good luck!

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/06/2020 07:30

He shouldn’t have blown up at you. “You’ll just have to get used to it” hard to when it clashes that badly and you have to go in there several times a day.

I wouldn’t let him do any other jobs for you.

Veterinari · 11/06/2020 08:30

It's a weird choice - beige and grey are opposite tones and obviously won't go - why did he not just go with white/dark grey and if you weren't sure why didn't you check before he did the whole bathroom?

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/06/2020 08:34

I think men have higher rates of colour blindness compared to women.

SparrowInTheHedge · 11/06/2020 09:52

It looks less bad this morning but there's a bit that DP got water on and it's back to fucking BEIGE.

Can you go round with a grout pen when he’s gone?.
