Sofa for grey living room

I'm moving house soon and our new living room has light/mid grey carpet - quite thick and soft, almost a velvet-y look to it. The walls are either a very light lilac or a very light grey - I can't quite tell!

I'm buying some new sofas but not sure what to go for. I want something fairly neutral, but would grey sofas be too much grey in an already very grey room? Cream is too stain-prone so that's out of the question. Would brown clash? Does anyone have any ideas?

Brown would be very dull with grey. If you’re brave a mustard yellow, forest green or navy would all look great. If not, dusky pink?

dimbles · 22/02/2020 19:25

I don't think I'm brave enough for mustard yellow, forest green or navy. I do like the sound of dusky pink but I worry that I'd get sick of it quite quickly!

Go get some paint charts and see.what colours you like together. I would say you need a rich tone. Plum, teal etc

dimbles · 22/02/2020 19:48

Paint charts are a great idea! I like the sound of teal.

Teal would be great.

SavoyCabbage · 22/02/2020 20:29

You have to be careful with grey that it doesn't look like a waiting room or an office.

Green? https://www.dunelm.com/product/halston-velvet-3-seater-sofa-1000141084?colour=Dark+Green

There is a new mustard colour corner sofa in Ikea.

copperoliver · 22/02/2020 20:32

Maybe black incase you change things over time or move again.x

GrockleRock · 22/02/2020 20:33

I would get a navy or charcoal sofa.

You can change the walls in a couple of hours if you wanted to.

mineofuselessinformation · 22/02/2020 20:34

Jewel colours? You could get them in a more muted time if you liked.

GinandGingerBeer · 22/02/2020 20:43

I'd definitely go for either teal, plum, fuchsia or navy preferably in velvet Smile

dimbles · 22/02/2020 20:54

Lots of jewel tone suggestions here! I really like teal and fuchsia as colours but I'm just worried that I'll go off them as I'm quite indecisive. There is something appealing about a bright velvet sofa, though!

I think black is a bit harsh but charcoal might work. Maybe I should play safe and just go for charcoal or something and add other colours in with cushions.

Purple!

stophuggingme · 22/02/2020 21:02

Yes purple
I have similar colours and carpet and a crushed velvet purple sofa with dark wood furniture it is really nice

dimbles · 22/02/2020 21:03

I'm not sure if this is much use 15 messages down, but I've attached a photo of the walls and carpet for reference.

Be brave OP. That room is crying out for some colour.

Southmouth · 23/02/2020 07:48

I’d go for a charcoal sofa and add more colour in with cushions/throws and accessories.

As much a I think the coloured sofas are nice, I know I’d get fed up with them fairly soon, and cushions are cheaper to replace than a sofa that I’d be wanting to keep for a long time.

Patchworksack · 23/02/2020 07:53

We have similar carpet and our walls are painted dulux Heartwood which is a kind of dark heather purple, with one grey sofa but in kind of tweedy textured fabric and one purple. We have high ceilings and huge windows though, it might be a bit much in a smaller room.

PollyRoe16 · 23/02/2020 16:25

Try a dark grey or we were brave in our new house and went for a teal velvet sofa. I always have a look on Pinterest for some good ideas/colour combinations

Orange or teal work well with grey imo.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 28/02/2020 21:43

We’ve just moved into our new house and painted the walls a really pale grey. But it’s grey grey - not a lilac grey. We’re having a kind of light pumice stone carpet put down and so between them, it’s very muted and light.

I’ve gone really bold with a dark blue sofa and plum rug. I don’t have it all yet so here’s a link to the rug and the sofa:

I was going to play it safe with a charcoal coloured sofa and I didn’t intentionally go for these colours. who knows if they’ll actually look ok, but I’m excited to see it all together. So basically I second going bold with teal, blue or green!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 28/02/2020 21:46

So weird it linked to a green sofa! This is mine: www.wayfair.co.uk/furniture/pdp/17-stories-stclair-reversible-sleeper-corner-sofa-u000006279.html?piid=228946041

johnwayneisbigleggy · 28/02/2020 21:52

Teal, mustard, orange if you're very brave or a nice green.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 28/02/2020 21:53

I’m clearly having some sort of breakdown Grin Wtf is going on with that link?
